Remember Illmatic

1. Genesis
2. N.Y. State of Mind
3. Life's a *****
4. World Is Yours
5. Halftime
6. Memory Lane (Sittin' in da Park)
7. One Love
8. One Time 4 Your Mind
9. Represent
10. It Ain't Hard to Tell

That in my opinion could be the greatest rap album ever, every song was great and the flow and lyrics were on another level.

What do you think is the all time greatest rap album?

It's one of them...it's all a matter of opinion. I'd say that Enter the 36 Chambers is about the same quality as Illmatic. Both were groundbreaking for their time.

I'd say that Common's Resurrection was a better album than Illmatic and is the best ever. I Used to Love H.E.R. is the perfect rap song IMO. Commons flow and delivery are on point, it tells a very intricate story with a great twist at the end, and the beat is silk. Of course this is all just my opinion.

I'm in total agreement, revolutionized everything.

Cool story, I remember when my brother brought that home, we're in the living room lisening to it... pops walks in, stands there for a minute. Walks over and just smashes the stereo, and it was HIS stereo!

Wow - looking at the thread title, I was going to say that Illmatic was right there along with BIG's Ready to Die, Wu-Tang's Enter The Wu-Tang, and Dr. Dre's The Chronic, and already all of them have been mentioned.

Honorable mention to Outkast's Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik and E-40 In a Major Way

i disagree with The Chronic revolutionizing anything. first off, it wasn't hip hop- it was gangster rap. 2nd, besides replacing ren & eazy with snoop, it offered nothing new that dre hadn't done with NWA all along. all it did was introduce the mainstream into accepting gangster rap.

agree on illmatic being one of the greatest. the cool thing about this one is the influence that his dad brings on the album.

so here's my picks on great rap albums.

How wasn't it hip hop? Rap is rap no matter what the subject matter and all rap is part of hip hop. Illmatic was definitely one of the best.

Some of my all time favorites are

The Diary and Untouchable by Scarface
Don't Give A Damn and Next Episode by Street Military(local Houston group)
Picture This by Do Or Die
G's Til We Die by Gang Society(local Houston group)
It's Dark And Hell Is Hot by DMX
A Rough Z'aggin Bible by Bam(local Houston rapper)

This might garner some flak, but it's all a matter of opinion.

I think AZ is just as good as Nas now. AZ doesn't have one mediocre album out and Doe or Die should widely be viewed as AZ's answer to Illmatic...both were classics. I thought Nastradamus was average at best. AZ's smooth, triple cadence flow sounds natural and unforced unlike Nas who sometimes sounds like he's trying to catch up with the beat. Nas is a better lyricist and may be a bit better in the storytelling department (prime example Rewind). As far as longevity goes, AZ was kind of introduced into the game by Nas, but he's certainly been around for a long time and has a nice body of work. Doe or Die, Pieces of a Man, 9 Lives, S.O.S.A., Aziatic, and now Final Call. I think Nas has more emotion on some of his tracks and really comes off like his songs effect him...AZ can sometimes sound uninspired by his song. I like AZ's delivery more and he can spit harder verses with more ease. Both are equally clever. Add to all of this that Nas has had the benefit of better, more consistent production and love in the public eye, I think AZ is certainly on his level at this point.

Songs to peep by AZ:

Gimme Yours
Wanna Be There
Love Me
Magic Hour...

And my favorite and IMO the best song between the 2 of them, Ho Happy Jackie off his first album Doe or Die.

I'm listening to Camp Lo's Uptown Saturday Night. I still haven't heard that new Mega yet Fix. I thought he JUST dropped an album before this one? Legal Hustle maybe? He's puttin in work or something.

Doe Or Die was tight but I haven't really been into AZ that much since that album came out. Problems was nice song though. The only albums I really like by Nas are Illmatic, I am and Stillmatic the others have some songs I like but nothing special about them. I heard Street Disciple and it wasn't all that great to me but I only heard it once.

In my personal opinion, illmatic was not a revolutionary or inspiring album in any way.

Dont misunderstand me, if theres an album i've listened to more, and enjoyed more than illmatic i cant think what it is, but the album was in some ways very limited. It didnt really, in terms of production or mic skills, bring anything new or innovative to the table. It simply took what others had tdone in the past, and did it ever so slightly better.

IMO, when looking for real hip hop classics (as with all music genres), you should look for something that really changed the way people looked at music, and the way future acts would perform (illmatic in NO way fits into thins catagory). I prefer things like '36 chambers,' '3 feet high and rising' 'low end theory' and 'it takes a nation of millions'

Sorry for ranting, illmatic disscusion always gets me started

How wasn't it hip hop? Rap is rap no matter what the subject matter and all rap is part of hip hop.

all rap is part of hip hop but hip hop is way more than just rap. rap is simply flowin to a particular to beat on a particular subject/s. hip hop incorporates more of a culture and actually combines the same musical elements that make great blues, jazz, gospel, and rock.

rap is dre, eminem, too short, dmx, etc. hip hop is fugees, digable planets, black eyed peas, pharcyde. artists like nas, tupac, rakim, and beastie boys are masters at combining both styles.

but rappin about blunts, *****es, and guns throughout an entire album isn't hip.

Hip hop is not a style of rap it's the culture. All the people you named are all rappers. You start off saying all rap is part of hip hop but then say Dre, Too Short and Dmx are not hip hop. That don't make any sense. Hip hop is the four elements rapping or mcing, djing, writing and breaking.

hip hop is the culture. hip hop music is the voice of the culture. everyone i mentioned raps but not all of them are just simply rappers. IMO, hip hop is a different element of rap with a deeper cultural aspect.

IMO, hip hop is a different element of rap with a deeper cultural aspect.

Rap is an element of Hip Hop. There are some rappers who stay true to the art of mcing, there are rappers who rap about materialistic things, and then there are rappers who rap more about the things that are going on in the world. At the end of the day it's still all apart of the Hip Hop culture.
