Airforce1234 07-23-2009, 12:33 PM its never too late bro, if u have the time n money to invest then its never too late, i havea friend who started boxing at 23 and did well or himself, nate campbell started at 28 , bernard hopkins started boxing at like 19 dude. Its all time and effort, u gotta put in the days-hours-months-years of training and fighting gaining experience. U wont get good in 1 day, it takes a long time for u to get good, that is if u have skill and power. The reason alot guys cant start fighting sports late in life is cause they have to work for a living, training-competing cost alot money, travel-food-hotels ect...so analyze all that and if u think u have the tools go try to make the machine which would be you =]
Rocky... 07-23-2009, 01:10 PM Its never to late, just get in about it, give it your best shot, and see where you end up :fing02:
Left2theliver 07-23-2009, 02:15 PM never too late, as a matter of fact 17/18 would be a good place to start. I'm 19, going to be 20 in september, and i have my first smoker match this saturday
Brian13 07-23-2009, 02:52 PM 17 is the ideal age because a good few fighters have started around that age and the sport is fairly new aswell.
Still Pimpin 07-23-2009, 04:40 PM I'm 29 and I live in Vegas which is gym heaven. I trained in boxing a bit when I was 26 and that was a late start.
A fight is a fight. I don't give a **** how old or experienced you are a warrior is a warrior. As soon as I get the money I'm going to start training in MMA.
I don't have to be a world champion I just want to be a skilled warrior. Every alpha male should be able to defend themselves and their family and if you train to do that you will eventually want to take a fight....trust me.
If it's about ego and you have to be a champ you still have a chance just bare in mind there are those who will be better than you.
In MMA historically there are few great champs without a loss or two. In my eyes those champs with the losses are the most respected.
Some 40 years old golf and some would rather fight. I want to fight and that's all I know.
Still Pimpin 07-23-2009, 04:46 PM I've got a close personal friend named Danny Davis (Dee-1) aka The Rapper / Scrapper. He sucks as a rapper but he's smoked bud amongst other things until he was 25 and he started training in Muay Thai when I started boxing. Long story short I ran into financial trouble and couldn't afford to train (I've got 2 kids) and he stayed in it. Dee has become a Muay Thai champ and has now transitioned to MMA, he won his first fight by K.O in 29 sec.
Look him up on Youtube there not much because he just started competing but the point is. It's only too late if you let it be.
winky44 07-23-2009, 05:02 PM thanks for the advice guys
any1 else?
TBEC2 07-23-2009, 05:22 PM I started at 21, and even then i was considered one of the younger guys at my gym. I know a few guys that are 30 and have just had their 1st MMA fights. As long as your body will cooperate with you age is nothing but a number.
Best of luck.

wow amazing story about your friend. is he muay thai world champ?
Move BRICKS™ 07-23-2009, 07:21 PM Certainly hope not, I'm just getting into it in my mid 20's. My best advice is to just find yourself a positive group of people that you can train with and also spend time with outside of the gym. It's amazing how bad habits left by past influences can slow you down in this sport.

You need mental strength above everything, if you expect to be a world class fighter, you will need to make the same sacrifices that world class fighters make - You will have to cancel subscriptions to magazines, stop stopping by the Dinosaur Rib Shack and buying ribs with two pounds of macaroni salad. You will have to stop slammin' your girlfriend as much as you usually do. You mentioned GSP, a person like him in particular made great sacrifices to get to where he is today, quitting school to work full time so he could pay for training.
My best advice for you is to get actively involved in a Jiu Jitsu school that you feel comfortable in and I am really stressing the "feel comfortable" part. If you can't relate or find friendship in the people you will be practicing with, you will not like your classes.

To be honest I am not the best source for advice on training, but I'll write a little about my experiences later. I just had 3 wizdom teeth pulled so I don't feel like thinking while I type right now.
Still Pimpin 07-24-2009, 06:27 PM wow amazing story about your friend. is he muay thai world champ?
I'm not sure if he became a world champ but look him up on google or youtube. I called him yesterday but he didn't answer. He rarely answers the phone now days but he always calls me back. I'll pm you if this thread is dead and let you know exactly.
His name is Dee-1 Danny Davis we both live in Las Vegas. He's trained with Greg Jackson in New Mexico several times and rolled with Jardine. He's yet to meet GSP or Rashad though.

He said Jardine was cool but this is a guy who doesn't really down talk anybody so unless Jardine was a complete ******* he would say the same thing...lol!!!
**** I'm 29 and as soon as I get a couple free $ I'm going str8 to the gym. I used to train in boxing and it was the best I ever felt in my entire life. I smoke a lotta weed so I feel sluggish too often (as stupid as it may have been) I used to pull to the gym smoking and go for an hour and a half training then eat chill smoke and hit the other gym to lift....lol!!!!!
Damn I miss that **** but this time I'm doing everything. I don't give a **** about being in the UFC I just wanna fight (**** a ball) I wanna submit people knock *****z out and learn how to intelligently defend myself in any situation....Why cuz I'm a man and as a kid all I did was watch WWF, old school karate movies, Jean Claud (aka =GSP) & Steven Segal......only now it's a real sport.
GroundSt.Pound 07-25-2009, 12:54 AM It would have been better to start earlier, but better late than never I say.

what is your friend up to now then? did he enter mma?
Lucky Charms 07-26-2009, 12:52 AM By current MMA standards that is young. A lot of guys don't start training mma until their college wrestling career is over.

You can't get a license until your are 18 anyways, so it's obviously not too late.
If you havent trained in anything your entire life but want to start now. It totally depends on you. If you are willing to be dedicated to it 100% you can still become a world class fighter.
For instance; Masato didn't start kickboxing until he turned 18. Look at him now, 2x K-1 MAX champion. Has 2 lambos, 1 ferrari, and a lotus! You can still make it man.

wow man great post! were did you get told about about Masato not starting kickboxing until he was 18?
i have done a bit of boxing and bjj, nothing serious do.
rainmaker89 07-27-2009, 02:09 AM hey man..i actually think you are the perfect age for starting MMA seriously..dude GSP never even wrestled in high school and now hes the best wrestler in the game..but you have to have that athlethic ability and are willing to dedicate your life literally to training who knows how far you can make it...but seriously its the perfect time...i say you start working on your hands young and learn the ground later on, or you could mix it up..

It's in his career history. He started training kickboxing at 17 to be exact and didn't go pro until 18(March 23, 1997). He's my favorite kickboxer, so I eneded up reading about it. lol
Your straight. Just go into a local MMA gym. That way you can get circuit training and sparring done. Because I believe there is no amatuer circuit for MMA to my knowledge, at least not in California. So you just go straight to pro in MMA.
