View Full Version : Who on this forum actually boxes?
Warrior Spirit 02-17-2005, 10:59 PM Okay I have been boxing, since this summer and have competed in one tournament in Portland,Oregon. I'm 5'11 and weigh 160, I get up every morning and run and then I go to classes and then hit the weight room, then I go to the boxing gym. I box but I'm not like aspiring to be a world beater or anything and I'm curious to know who else on this forum boxes ,either seriously or not.

I was a good to great athlete in most sports and I would have loved to have boxed in my youth. How old are you BTW? Cita lives out near your neck of the woods I believe.

.....A bunch of reasons that have to do with my gut instincts and really not a whole lot more. You got really upset with some juvenile abuse a while back and usually only the really young people respond that way. Now that I know your only 17, an impressionable kid, and a true boxing fan, I will no longer give you **** in such an aggresive manner. :)

I'm similar too. I've been boxing since I was about 5 years old but have no desire to do it professionally though. I have alot respect for any who box for a living.

Fallout 02-17-2005, 11:43 PM I have done a bit of boxing. However, now I am doing grappling. train 3 to 4 times a week for 3 hours a time most nights. Lately, because I just started a new job, I have been training less which is too bad. I love it.
Slipx 02-17-2005, 11:53 PM We were sitting at a little party at a buddy of mine's apartment near LSU one day when one of his roommates (massive juicemonkey) everyone seemed to be afraid of stood up, drunk, and put on a pair of gloves. "Who wants to box? **** all you *******. etc." I took this as disrespect, where I come from there were no guys like this. Plus, he didn't know me at all, and just called the room my friend and I were in a room full of *******.
He was absolutely huge , very little fat on this guy, totally ripped, 260 lbs easy. He powerlifted for Gayle Hatch, and claimed to bench 550, and over the head bench 375ish. one of those guys you were just positive did tons of steroids, over ten-twenty cycles, no doubt. Which was perfect for me, because I've always despised cheaters. He was 26 years old, and I remember this guy sitting next to me started as a pitcher for LSU tigers baseball, and he punked out hardcore and was like 'i aint boxin you brantley'. I only know that Brantley was in the army, and was very skinny before going in,and his friends told me about his steroidal habits. Oh yeah and he idolized Tyson.
I was 19 at the time, and really didn't know much about boxing, except for that I had a decent jab, which I developed at home, since I was 15 I've beat on the heavy bag any time I wanted a stress release. I was there with a friend from high school that loved music, and only liked to watch boxing. I was dabbling in drugs at the time, and had taken seven valiums about two hours before this. I've fought on v's before, and always thought they gave me an edge. (i was a very stupid kid.)However, I had never boxed on them. I stood up and looked Brantley in the eye, and said "I'll box you." the room was suddenly quiet. then everyone jumped up, in a weird fashion.
So we go outside. I barely know these people, and they are all shouting for brantley to beat me down. the grass is slightly wet, and it's raining a little. No vaseline, no headgear, just me, a 225 lb lanky flabby kid in front of this hulking beast that had the body of Evander Holyfield, easy. I wouldn'tve done this had I been older, for the risks of doing this without proper headgear etc are very high, imagine being paralyzed because of some dumb bull**** like this.
He comes at me like Hagler came at Hearns, I'm talking full power hooks at the very beginning of the fight. I dodge the first two and land a jab and a right hand, then he catches me with this brutal right hook and my feet slipped because of the wet grass.
I was up in a split second. I wasn't the slightest bit dazed, at all. I remember his friends all going "OOOOHH KNOCK THAT MOTHER****ER OUT!" and etcetra, and I remember seeing Blaine, my friend that came with me, watching the fight quietly, as I got up. I paw with the jab instictually, but Brantley comes out again with the hooks and catches me again, and again my feet slip and I fall back to the wet earth under the moonlight. I was not at all dazed, and these are the hardest shots I've ever taken, it was ****ing weird. It was like my head was a concrete pillar, and I was born for the sport. My eye was all puffy and black and **** but I swear to god I felt no loss of balance or anything like that, both KD's I jumped back up like a fighter who slipped.
So his friends are all like 'He's had enough ok we're through' and I hadn't even really been down, both KD's were slips but of course caused by massive punches, the wet grass was the factor though-if we were in a ring with shoes and canvas I bet anything I would've weathered that no problem, since I wasn't the least bit dazed.
Brantley was very tired at this point, and we weren't even fighting that long. I knew he would be ****ed if I could weather this for a minute longer, and then I saw his buzzsaw of hooks coming and ducked under, BOOM BOOM let off two hooks to the body and he dropped his hands, BLAM let off a weak straight right hand and knocked him down, and his foot hung in the air when he landed. His friends were quiet as **** and didn't say a single word except GET UP BT! (his last name was taylor) here I was, a 19 yo kid, who just dropped their boy, supposedly the toughest mother****er on this campus. Of course his friends said it was a slip, "cmon bt get that ****er he didnt knock you down it was just a slip" but I caused it with a combination and then a decent right hand, so lol at those tards.
He gets up quickly though, and comes back at me...doesnt move his head at all, just comes right in and throws hook after hook squared up, no stance! "You wont punk me in front of my friends" mentality! Here I am backing up jabbing trying to get my feet to adhere on this wet grass getting my ass handed to me by this guy. He was a killer, no body shots just a head hunter..BAM smacked me with a left hook, I duck the right hook instictually and I'm backing up trying to let this ape get tired, landing occassional jabs when he starts breathing hard...then asks me to hold on, says 'stop fighting' he went to take off his gloves and I came up top with a really weak left hook and was coming in with a right hook when Blaine came and bear hugged me to where I was immobilized from punching anymore at least
I became the legend that showed up BT. Everyone around that college knew who I was, it was as if I was the doctor who cured cancer. People had a different type of respect for me, and I liked it. I loved it. I wanted more of it.
After this night I knew I had the tools to become a champion, especially after seeing John Ruiz become champion, I just knew I could have my own page in the sweet science.
I started boxing in a gym at age 21, I'm 22 now, with 2 amateur fights under my belt. Won the first fight with a TKO in round 1, the second fight I won because the guy quit on me after the first round. I felt cheated and conceded at the same time, it was the weirdest feeling ever, but my two trainers were happy.."tonight we go home early, kid" was Norm's exact words..

Eyeh8you 02-18-2005, 12:18 AM SWEET STORY! I boxed when i was a young spud in da army and still spar at the local ring in little italy. I too once had to fight a monster in college and . I was comin back from this frat party (my bud was a delta sig) any way me and this chick hooked up and she was signing me in, it was like 1:00am, this monster **** was behind me was drunk as hell and just started pushin me from behind mummbling "hurry up lil *****". The girl I was w/said leave it alone and I was cause I wanted to screw her bad. But the halfbreed **** kept hittin me and sayin **** like "you lil ***** you a man or a *****" and then nailed me in the cheek. I was suprised because one, he hit me, and two for his size he realy could hit hard or was just that wasted. I didnt box him though I ended it it quick. I jamed my thumb in his eye as hard as I could and as he bent down in pain I headbutted him right on the temple. I was so fukin hyped "you know all the andrenaline" that I just took off running and forgot the chick. Later the police got ahold of me (I had already signed my name) and asked me to write down my account of it. I said basically I defended myself and plus from the video they couldnt realy see what happened cause all these dudes were surrounding us. Any way the cop told me he was a local goon that has been prosecuted in the past for assualts. He asked me "hey did you poke him in the eye" I said no and the cop looked at me and said ok you can go. Two weeks later a friend of mine that new a chick that screws that goon told him that he lost his eye. I always felt bad about that kid gettin fuked up like thatI didnt mean for that to happen. However, I have used that thumbing many times since then. Man it stops a fight quick!
whdempsey 02-18-2005, 12:29 AM Me. I'm trying to be very serious about, but classes keep getting in the way. Oh, and a current lack of car...
Slipx 02-18-2005, 12:34 AM He asked me "hey did you poke him in the eye" I said no
Laughed my ass off at that phrase, but yeah, it sucks he lost his vision. But a guy like that really deserves it, he had it coming to him. Especially a **** to push you like that from behind, he was probably abused as a kid.
Think of it like this buddy- IMO you did him a favor, picture him in a bar somewhere doing that in a parking lot to someone with a gun, and he would be dead...you spared him, in a sense.
:boxing: :boxing: :boxing:

Mr. Violence 02-18-2005, 12:54 AM I used to box in amateur but stopped...never intended to go pro. I train once in while just to keep in shape. I also wrestled a little in high school and know a little Ju Jitsu. So technically I'm an MMA guy. I got into boxing when I was younger cuz my step dad wanted to teach me discipline...because I beat the living **** out of this big kid who ****ed with me in school and my step dad didn't like the way I beat his ass...he thought it was a "sneaky and dishonaorable" way of doing it. What happened was this big dude who everyone was afraid of started to **** with me...and he just would not stop. So finally after a month of this decide I wasn't taking any more ****. So one day he got in my face like he was gonna beat my ass...this dude was huge at least 200 lbs. So when he got in my face I told him "I don't want to fight" and acted like I was afraid of him...so as soon as I convinced him that I didnt want to fight he turned his head laughing...when he turned his head away from me...that is when I sucker punched him as hard as I could in the side of the head and knocked him the **** out..as he was down I proceeded to get more free shots and kicks on him...ended up getting suspended from school...and my step dad thought i was a punk for sucker punching him, and put me in a gym to learn discipline. To this day I'm glad I beat that ****ers ass, cuz he broke the number one rule "never turn your back on your enemy"...I'm also glad cuz I got introduced into boxing for beating this ****heads ass.
Super_Lightweight 02-18-2005, 01:27 AM I've been boxing for about 2 and a half years. I'm 5'8'', fight at 140 lbs, hav a 70.5" reach and I've only had 4 fights in that time. I've only been down once and that was by choice. Overall i just need mroe sparring. A lot more.
Slipx 02-18-2005, 01:29 AM nice reach
boxernyc 02-18-2005, 01:35 AM Wow this is an awesome thread. The stories kick ass.
I just started boxing in NYC at Gleason's a little over a month ago. I'm 28, 173 lbs, but could probably get down to 160 and 5'10". I was thinking of trying for the Golden Gloves when I started but I realized I had way too little time to train. I am fairly new to boxing. I was pretty much an outside fan until my roomate had me watch some incredible fights and got me hooked about two years ago. Now I can't get enough. I did Tae Kwon Do at college and got my black belt. I went to all kinds of competitions and loved training. But I was never flexible and didn't enjoy the parts of the martial arts that didn't relate to either sport or defense (forms, step drills, etc). So I decided to try boxing, which is the hardest training contact sport imo with none of the nonsense. Man have I loved it. There is such a great feeling that washes over you after wailing on the heavy bag until your arms are sore. I plan on sparring in the amatuers and definitely in next years Golden Gloves. I plan (heavy emphasis on plan) to try and go pro. I will see where the road takes me. I'm not one of those fake hard guys who has something to prove. If I'm not ready I won't. Anyway I guess this is the end of my overly long post!
xrhythmxnxbluesx 02-18-2005, 01:36 AM i actually started with muay thai kickboxing... and my trainer wanted me to work with my hands... so i started boxing... been boxing and kickboxing bout 5 years now... and i'm juss learning grappling and takedowns... so ima mma kinda guy..

sounds like me when I was around age 20.
the only boxing gym close by (i was living in baton rouge at that time) was on east 14th street, which is a high murder rate downtown area here. my father didnt want me to go, because he's a racist pig. however I am not, so I said what the hell and drove up there one day and that's where I got my start.granted the guys didn't know a whole lot and none were world champions, and no fighters who trained there were undefeated. a few were pros with a few ko's under their belt, and i learned from them.
they had a certain respect for me being white just showing up like that without fear

Lordy 02-18-2005, 03:04 PM I tried boxingwhen I was about fifteen, was no good at it but I fell in love with the sport. Later swithched to the martial arts jiu jitsu first, then karate which I still do], and found I had more of an aptitude for this style of fighting. I still love boxing though.
BUSTA-KO 02-18-2005, 03:28 PM I took up boxing when I was 13. I was decent but I just had more fun with it than anything else. Boxing kept me off the streets which was cool, and it also added some muscle to my skinny behind lol. I also got into Boxing because of my cousin. He won the Gold medal at the 1984 Olympics, but he never really did anything in the pro's. Anyway, When I was younger I used to try to copy his moves but ended up looking like I was having a seizure...that's when I realized I had better change to a different sport before I become a laughing stock at school. lol.

yeah, I could imagine any martial artist that does just a little bit of boxing training would become a true force in whatever division they do, the striking training a hardcore fighter does is uncomparable ; especially with all the ground moves you learn in various martial arts, you would definately become feared on the ground.
but point fighting always failed to interest me..

point fighting is a flat out joke and in fact...can make you develop bad habits on the street because you learn to pull back your punches when you fight for points...unfortunately I got up to brown belt in Okinawan Uechi Ryu Karate before I realised I would be better off learning something that is more modernized and would work on the street...luckily I was young when I wasted my time on tradtional karate so it wasn't that bad.

I am very unfamiliar with the rules of point fighting. They give you less points for punching full force?
I appreciate your input,btw.

it's been years since I did it...I was in a few AAU tournaments...in point Karate you can't hit in the face...you get a point for throwing a punch inches from someone's face...than that's cosidered a point...body shots are a point, you have to pull back your shots too. the ref stops the action whenever someone scores a point...then you restart again from the starting positions...it just wasn't for me. It wasn't real enough. The only traditional martial arts worth anything in my opinion is Ju Jitsu, Muay Tai...these are some brutal styles that are absolutely effective on the street. Boxing is good for the street too.
tyson 02-18-2005, 08:48 PM I started boxing when I was 16, after seeing the Rocky movies on tv :)
Boxed my first fight after 8 months, against a former norwegian champion, and knocked him unconscious for 10 minutes in the 3rd round.
5 of my first 6 fights I won by knockout (amateur), and became a Norwegian champion in the process.
In my 9th fight, I was supposed to meet a guy named Nikita Dubunin in the weightclass over mine (in 64kg).
I had never heard about the guy before, and it didn't bother me.
I had knocked out the junior champion in 60kg the day before, so my confidence was pretty ok ;)
But then, at the day of the fight, people started coming over to me sking "are you the one who's going to fight Nikita? YOU??.... well... Best of lucks then..."
Everybody, from kids to grown-ups asked me the same and wished my luck, and I didn't even know why. Who was this guy?
Anyway, I didn't bother to ask, and just went up in the ring at fight-time. This Nikita guy did indeed look very focused and determined it seemed when I looked across the ring.
The bell sounded, and before I had managed to take one step forward, he was all over me, throwing shots at all angles non-stop.
I was completly overwhelmed by this guy who punched more in 30 seconds than I used to in 2 rounds, and I got really angry at this punk who refused to let me get started. So I started throwing heavy hooks with bad intentions, neglecting my defence totally.
To my surprise, he never stopped throwing punches in bunches, not even for one little second!
So after the second round, I sat down in my corner and said to my trainer "I'm too tired, I can't do this no more.."
He asked me if Nikita hit hard, and I answered like every fighter would; "heeeeeell no!!"
So I got motivated to the 3rd round, and up I went.
But in the 3rd round, we threw a right hook at the same time, and his punch landed on my right biceps, and my arm just fell down by my side.
I tried to lift it back up with my left glove, but it just went limp again. Nikita stepped back in wonder, probobly thinking what was wrong. Then he smiled a little, before raising his right hand like Sugar Ray Robinson did against Jake Lamotta in Raging Bull, and unleashed a flurry of punches which I wasn't able to block, and only had my left hand to punch back with.
Somehow I weathered the storm without any problems, and the bell sounded to end the round.
In the 4th and final round, I thought to myself that I would have to get my right hand to function, so I managed to do so about 1 minute into the round. Then I thought to myself that now I could do what I used to do in training. So when he threw a hard left jab, I stepped out a little with the right foot, slipping outside the punch and countered with my first straight right in the fight, BOOM!
The only thing I remember from that fight is how sweet I felt when I saw him sliding on his ass into his own corner, and how he stumbled when he rose at the count of 9... The judge let him continue, and as I was walking in to finish him, the final bell went off.....
I had lost the fight 4-1...:(
Afterwards, I learned that Nikita was an Uzbekistan champion, had won a four-nation tournament between Uzbekistan, Russia, Kazakhstan and some other country, and that he had 87 fights with 84 wins...
I have been injured for 2 years now, but I plan a comeback this fall. And this time I'll kick his ass!

PessimisticPug 02-20-2005, 06:06 PM I fought for a while out of the Detroit area. Started amatuer in '86 and then turned pro in '93 after about 60 or so fights. James Toney and i fought out of the same amatuer gym and then jackie kallen started coming down when she first became a manager. We got to be good friends and later she would leave the gym and start her own stable of fighters. james would go with her later and win the middleweight title. thats when i decided to turn pro. Called Jackie and she set me up with what i needed, she is a great lady. Trained hard and ended up fighting at the palace of auburn hills a couple of times and then walked away from the sport. i was forced by my trainer to fight while i had a lung infection, man I could hardly breathe let alone fight. i went through with the fight because he told nme that if I pulled out of the fight that i would be blackballed and not fight in the state again. I said to hell with this and quit. i did comeback and had a few more fights after a while but it was nothin'. I am now a referee in the amatuers and just took my professional certification test on saturday and i believe that i will have passed. So watch for a rockin' ref on the television, that would be me.......Rockin'

Fought alot of tough guys in my day, among them Oba Carr, Carl Griffith, Gary Stretch, Dennis Andries, Kenny Gould, James Toney, Leo Nolan, Jason Pappilion, Bronco McCart, Tarrick Salmaci and so many others. I am now a referee in the amatuers and just took my professional certification test on saturday and i believe that i will have passed. very cool..care to give a name?
PessimisticPug 02-21-2005, 01:58 PM James and I used to spar when we were both amatuers back in the day. I was fighting at 119-125 and he was like 156-160 or so. Quite honestly he was not a great amatuer fighter but he was good. One day I had gone into to train and james had a fight coming up. He was boxing really hard that day and i told him to let up on his shots a bit, after all I was like 15 or 16 years old at the time and he was like 21 or something, a boy boxing a man. So he goes off on giving me the business saying that Im a ***** and all of that. James fighting as an amatuer and fighting as a pro were two totally different things. I would sparr again later with him when he was holding the middleweight title and let me tell you that guy was smooth. When he was moving you couldnt hit him with a handfull of rocks, or a handfull of anything for that matter. Before going into work with him my trainer had told me that he did not want me taking a step backwards with him, he wanted me pushing forward aggressively as I normally did when i fought. Well we got going and heres James floating around on his bike swatting me and slipping what ever i had to offer in my pursuit. Sometime during the round we stood at ring center and he had just landed a sweet shot to my face, he stood there and we started throwing. I dont recall the whole exchange but I do recall catching his hook and sharply countering with mine as we continued to exchange. I landed another solid shot and he backed off on his bike again, proclaiming his superiority to the world and everybody in the gym. Quite honestly the guy is superior, but as I again began my pursuit I knew that i had the better of that lengthly exchange and he knew it too. I never did take a step back when sparring with him after that, but we only sparred a couple of times when he was champion. Ask him now and he will most likely not recall the sessions, after all the guy is or was a world beater, but then again maybe he would....Rockin'

thanks.
Boxing is getting bigger in Melbourne. Last night we hosted the peden vs cambell fight (i couldn't go, i take my boxing classes wed. nights) . sam soliman also fought and won on the undercard. and another guy called shannon taylor who has been re-building his career since sugar shane demlished him a few years back. guys like peden, green and kostya are raising the profile of the sport.
however australi is the ass end of the world in regard to tv syndication. we hardly get any fights. that's why i rely on sites such as this so heavily.
best,
