In doing research to get myself up to speed on the world of boxing prior to my birth -- i read an interesting article about the infamous Benny Peret/Emile Griffith fight.

I had absolutely no idea that people had thought Griffith was gay. Not that it really matters, but has anyone been able to confirm this??

Nope. No one has yet confirmed it....not even his boyfriend.

Ironically if thats the case, Mike Tyson is gay and so is every british speaking man on the planet.

Dont be stereotypical voice has nothing to do with nothing.

Do you really think so? Hmmm....

Well, in this documentary that i just heard about called Ring of Fire, I guess i'll get to hear Griffith speak. I'm not too sure how sold I am on this idea though

I got thinking about this earlier today. The USA Network contacted me about doing a co-promotion for their new movie: "Ring of Fire: The Emile Griffith Story"

Well, this is all that I've been able to pull off of the internet:

"We just saw the documentary RING OF FIRE: THE EMILE GRIFFITH STORY about a 1962 boxing match between Emile Griffith and Bennie “Kid” Paret. At the weigh-in, Paret called Griffith a “maricon” (slang for ******). The fight was for the welterweight championship and the third time they met. Griffith bludgeoned Paret into unconsciousness in the 12th round. Ten days later, he died"

Maybe Rick Reeno has some more details?? hint, hint.

Lamotta was also supposed to be gay.

I've heard the stories about Griffith and the remarks that Paret made, but LaMotta? I have never heard anything pertaining to that and the movie Raging Bull gave no indication whatsoever about him being anything but girl crazy!

Where did you get this info?

Yeah, I agree-- that's pretty rediculous. I suppose the poster thought it was pretty rediculous too, given that he hasn't posted a reply.

Still no Ring of Fire details Rick Reeno??

Don't know about Emile Griffith, but I know of several current boxers that are gay. Two of them are heavyweight brothers...

Vitali Klitschko actually was questioned in some German fitness magazine if Wladimir was gay. Here's the quote (translated):

Reporter: Is there any truth to the rumours that your brother is gay?
Vitali: I think he is gay.
Reporter: Why is that?
Vitali: Because his dick tastes like ****.

That's..mmm...bizarre...now the question is, where did you FIND those pictures??

Found this bit of news on East Side Boxing the other day about Ring of Fire (patting myself on the back for answering my own question):

“Ring of Fire: The Emile Griffith Story” Set To Premiere On April 20th

02.03.05 — Ring of Fire: The Emile Griffith Story, USA Network’s historic Sundance Film Festival acquisition, will make its exclusive television debut on the network April 20th, 9:00 PM ET/PT. Directed by Dan Klores and Ron Berger, Ring of Fire is a moving story of love, violence and redemption that chronicles the life of six-time world boxing champion Emile Griffith, who in 1962 killed the then champion Benny “kid” Peret in the ring. The bout had a lasting impact on not only the sport, but also on the media and politics of the day..

“We were eager to get Ring of Fire on the air as soon as possible in order to capitalize on the extraordinary acclaim generated at the Sundance Film Festival,” said Bonnie Hammer, President of USA Network and SCI FI Channel. “We are truly proud to bring this provocative, deeply moving film to a nationwide audience.”

Ring of Fire explores the events of Griffith’s life through compelling archival footage, interviews with champion boxers, journalists, historians and most movingly through the reactions of members from both families. The film includes interviews with Paret’s wife and son as well as some noted journalists and boxers of the day including Jimmy Breslin, Pete Hamill, Neal Gabler, the late Jack Newfield, Charles Kaiser, Carmen Basilio, Jose Torres, Gene Fullmer and Juan LaPorte.

Griffith, who immigrated to New York City from the Virgin Islands in the late 1950s, quickly became a serious welterweight contender after winning a National Golden Glove championship. He became a rising star when he won the title from Paret, an illiterate Cuban exile who shared a huge boxing future with Griffith. At the afternoon weigh-in of their rubber match, Paret stood beside his challenger, whispered in Griffith’s ear “maricón,” the Spanish word for “******.” Griffith lunged at the Cuban champion in front of shocked onlookers, setting the stage for a brutal bout and a lifetime of haunting memories.

Klores and Berger’s first film, the award winning, “The Boys of 2nd Street Park” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was released by Showtime to much acclaim in 2003.

Ouch -- I smell a fight brewing. Okay, I'm done instigating.

Its an interesting topic of discussion, especially in a sport like boxing. I mean, a lot of people speculate that Peret died because he picked a fight w/ Griffith by calling him gay. I think its worth more investigation.

I actually found those pictures on the Klitschkos' official website like 2 years ago. Interestingly enough, I've yet to find those pictures again, as they were removed. But I've kept those pictures to keep reminding everyone...and to jack off to, of course.
