View Full Version : Paulo Filho is still a top 5 MW
The fight at Dream ten shows why Paulo Ely Filho is top 5 in the division.
He went up against Melvin Manhoef who is an incredible striker who has power to ko anybody and showed up overweight because he thot the fight was at 205 pounds. He lost the weight the same day and got to 184. Got fuk-ed up by Melvin getting hit flush on the chin multiple times and got dropped, Melvin made one tiny mistake and got taken down, full mounted, and tapped out by an armbar in under three minutes.
i know Melvin isnt technical but Paulo took the hardest shots Melvin had, and still tapped him out.
The fight against Sonnen was bs, he was in a B level organization for higher weights, he already tapped out Sonnen and there was no competition and no exposure (a lot of people sed they fight saw him fight in the second sonnen fight and had no idea he beat him already) which probably caused him to slack off.
He should stay at MW because he is too small for LHW. He has big fights like Mayhem and Jacare at Dream and he can re up his rep which he probably already has with this fight.
jakkups 07-20-2009, 04:22 PM Filho is good when he's on but I still feel people overhype the guy. This fight was no different from Melvin's last 3 losses in that he gave the guys his best shot before being caught in a submission halfway into the 1st round. Nonetheless he still got the win after a shaky start which will do him some good mentally.
Other than his wins over Misaki, Suloev and Chonan he hasn't overly impressed me. His WEC run was a joke through no fault of his own simply because the best they had for him was Sonnen and Doerksen. In the UFC's MW division I still think he would get beaten by the top guys. And against Jacare and Miller I can't see him fairing any better. But it's one of those situations where it's down to him and how he fairs in the next few fights. If he gets some impressive wins under his belt then I'll agree with you and say he's top 5, but at the moment he isn't IMO.
th4l3pr3ch4un 07-20-2009, 04:26 PM Dont make excuses for his loss to sonnen, he showed up knowing he lost before he even stepped in the ring... He clearly had a horrible training camp if even having one at all.

He already beat him. Filho's weakness is his mental status. But you gotta give him props, after the sh!t wit sonnen, he fought a tougher dude came in at the wrong weight still lost the weight and won.
Jakk Ups the names you listed who he beat are strong names who have beaten good fighters. He also beat Ninja when ninja was actually good. Ronaldo Souza hasnt beaten anybody except Mayhem.
I know you were never a fan of him Jakk Ups but just from the way you typed you response I can tell that you were at least a little impressed by his win. If he can win the Dream title if he stays at MW I think he solidifies he should get a chance at the UFC even tho I think he needs to be there now
MOREBASS 07-20-2009, 04:39 PM Top 10, yes. Top 5, that's arguable. I don't think so. As stated, I think he'd have a tough time with a few of the top UFC MW's.
Very good fighter, no doubt.

The only UFC fighters that I think would give him any trouble at MW are Anderson and Wanderlei, Marquart, Maia, Okami, Henderson, and Akaiyama.
I dont think he's better then Anderson or Henderson, I think Wanderlei is an even fight as is Maia because they are both grapplers and I think he'd beat Marquart, Okami and Akaiyama. I really dont think guys like Cote or Bisping would trouble him and I do think he belongs in the UFC but after the Sonnen fight I dont blame anyone for not believing in the dude

With Jacare it's more of a style matchup than who has he beat thing. Jacare is the far better grappler IMO and on the feet it would be pretty even. With Misaki, Chonan, Ninja and Suloev it's a case of tough fighters who have beaten other good fighters but other than Misaki have never accomplished anything which would say that they're top tier talent.
I was impressed that he didn't fall prey to Melvin's pressure and kept composure. Not an easy thing to do and he did it so I can't fault the performance. It's where he goes from here which is what I'm waiting for to really decide whether or not I agree with you as far as his placement as a top 5 MW.
LA BAD BOY 07-20-2009, 05:11 PM FILHO is top 5 middleweight.
That guy just cant get chance against top fighters.
First he suppose to fight in PRIDE tournament against DEAN LISTER
and he got injured in SULOEV fight and he couldnt go onnnnn.
Then he come up with SONNEN in worsth possible shape ever, cuz
he had familly problems or something.
If FILHO take you down he will submitt you.
He is one of most underrated fighter today.
I really hope that he fight JACARE in next fight and then
he go to UFC and fight best.
He woud smash BISPING,SEXYAMA,BELTCHER.
I dont think he can beat ANDERSON but he is top 5 fighter for sure.
GroundSt.Pound 07-20-2009, 05:30 PM Filho sucks. He's content fight in Japan where he can fight cans and 1 dimensional fighters. War Can Crusher!!!!
And where he can sauce and use Rohypnol and other sedatives.
You won't see him fight in NA again and therfore he won't be a top 5 MW

Don't agree, 7 of his 18 matches have gone the distance against guys who I wouldn't regard as great all round grapplers. He's gonna find it very hard against guys of equal BJJ skill or very strong wrestlers with good submission defence. All you have to do with Filho is defend armbars since thats the only submission hold he ever uses.
Abd he's still 17-1 with the one loss he gave to Sonnen
