The Consequences of Love aka Le conseguenze dell'amore
    Running time: 100 minutes

Titta di Girolamo is a middle aged Italian man who lives in a hotel in Switzerland, where he has resided for several years. He is often cold, showing no interest in making conversation with the staff or guests, and only socialising occasionally, when there is a game of cards being played.

His narration informs us of his insomnia, the emptiness of his existence and the fact that he hides a secret. After the hotel waitress reacts angrily to him continually ignoring her greetings, he finally lets his guard down, engaging her in conversation and developing a liking for one another. There relationship has a downside, however, sparking a desire to leave behind the situation that he has been in for so long, despite the fact that he may be unable to escape it.

What I liked: TCoL had a certain style to it that drew me in and held my attention. There were several scenes where there wasn't much talking or plot development, but which still managed to hold my interest. The dialogue was good, particularly early on, when it built up my interest in finding out the true nature of the lead character and how things would develop.

What I disliked: I found the ending a bit too depressing and wish that they'd chosen to go another way with it. I think it also might've been good to see a bit more interaction between Titta and the object of his affection. Their scenes together were good but too few IMO.

This is the sort of film that, while not perfect, has both depth and style, and makes me interested in seeing more work from the director.

    7.5/10
