Former WBO middleweight champion Felix Sturm maintained his reputation as one of the top-3 fighters in his weight class with a unanimous points decision victory over American Robert Frazier in Leverkusen, Germany tonight. The victory keeps the 25-year-old German on track for a meeting with the winner of the Oscar De La Hoya/Bernard Hopkins clash which takes place in Las Vegas later this evening.
A sell-out 3,500 crowd turned out to watch Sturm put on an intelligent display of boxing which earned him the WBO International title.
After twelve rounds the three judges Andre van Grotenbruel (Belgium), Robin Dolpierre (France) and Reynaldo Cadero (Italy) scored the contest 116:112, 119:109 and 117:111 in favour of Sturm.
“Facing the winner of the de la Hoya-Hopkins fight is what I really want now”, said the former WBO champion.
“I beat Oscar in June and I should be the one who is fighting a rematch against him tonight or fight against Hopkins for the title.”

Marjoh 09-18-2004, 09:47 PM Well, if Tito lose to Mayorga, then he's out of the picture.
NiGe2011 09-19-2004, 01:57 AM Did anybody see the preview for Tito and Mayorga after the PPV tonight? It was one of the most cheaply put together and downright lamest promo's that I have ever seen!
Props to Sturm on the win, I think he is gonna have more luck looking for a rematch with Oscar then he will getting a shot at Hopkins though.
neils7147933 09-19-2004, 04:02 AM Sturm needs to beat one or two 160 lb. guys with a name Americans recognize - probably in America. A William Joppy or a Robert Allen or Raul Marquez would do - but someone that Hopkins or De La Hoya or Taylor has beaten. Staying at home and winning fights will not earn him a big money bout.
And I know he already beat DLH, but it's a "L" in the record books against the only opponent than anyone but the biggest diehard boxing fans would immediately recognize.
If he beats a couple Top 10 guys, maybe there's money in a fight for a rematch with Oscar or a fight with Hopkins. But there's too many names out there right now of guys fighting each other. Sturm needs to get in the mix.
Cleary23 09-19-2004, 12:35 PM Right now Sturm doesnt deserve a match with Hopkins and Hopkins will not give it to him. He beat an out of shape DLH and he couldnt even finish him. Hopkins would destroy Sturm.

STURM WANTS TO SLEEP IN THE RING C/O HOPKINS. SLEEPING IS A GOOD JOB IF YOU ARE PAID IN MILLION$$$$.
Cleary23 09-19-2004, 12:47 PM Hahahahahahahha
SalvaDominicano 09-19-2004, 05:10 PM i would like to see sturm and wright go at it.
mic573 09-19-2004, 05:18 PM Let's see for Hopkins 20th defense, Hopkins vs. Sturm or Hopkins vs. winner of Tito/Mayorga. That is not much of a decision to me. Hopkins beats all of them.
neils7147933 09-28-2004, 05:21 PM Felix's promoter really needs to get him on a high-profile United States card where people will see him get a legit win. For most of us, the De La Hoya would-be tuneup is the only time we've seen the guy fight. Not a good way to sell a potential match-up with one of the 10 most reconizable active boxers in the world. I'm not debating whether he got robbed vs. DLH, but since he didn't immediately get a big fight, he needs to go put in more work.
FrankJack 09-28-2004, 11:02 PM Personally, I don't think Sturm's messin with Bernard. I think Sturm threw quite a few punches in his fight with Oscar but never finished the job. Hopkins didn't have to bring the fight for very long till Oscar didn't want it anymore. It would be a good technical fight (which alot of casual fans hate), but it won't bring in any money (which I don't care about). What I would like to see though, is a Sturm/Trinidad fight, since they both want Bernard. I think that'll be a better fight than Sturm vs. Hopkins. And it looks like Hopkins is gonna have to keep looking in the 160 lbs division since Tarver's now looking to fight Johnson. He's got plenty of talent to choose from though.
But we'll see how it all goes down this weekend.

I would agree that a Sturm/Trinidad fight would be better than Sturm or Trinidad going up against BH directly.
I'll say this again I don't think Sturm has anything in his arsenal at the moment for him to cope up with what BH has to offer.
Neuraxis 09-28-2004, 11:32 PM Sturm isn't ready, nor does he deserve it yet.

I also did not find Sturm very exciting. He jabbed DLH well and ... and I don't know what else to say.

Hurlex 09-29-2004, 12:09 AM sturm doesnt deserve it yet...???wtf..and what the hell did dlh do to deserve his shot...all dlh did was lose to this kid..then charge us 60dollars to see a boring fight with the only good thing being-seeing the guy that screwed us(dlh) get ko'ed
sturm not being ready is another thing..but not deserving it??and who does tito.the guy who has not been here for a year..or eastman who has not a fougt a decent M.W....or taylor..who is overrated for beating up blown up guys and old M.W...please
sturm is a true middle weight and he takes body shots well and has a great defense..true maybe his power isnt there wont say anything about that..but he has boxing skills...i would prefere to see taylor vs sturms..take on winner of mayorga/tito vs hopkins (since there will no be a jones pay day for hopkins now)

Rationalizing bad behavior by pointing out more bad behavior doesn't cut it.
Winter 09-29-2004, 03:15 AM I like Sturm. I think he is a great boxer.
