View Full Version : Who had/has the biggest glass jaw in the heavyweight division?

Puerile and derogatory it may be, but who has the most subseptible chin in the whole history of the heavyweight division?

I've put down some notables, plus one or two others that haven't really got dodgy chins just to stir it up. Let's have some votes and some feedback...

tommy morrison comes to mind.

I still can't get over Herbie (my vote) the first time I saw him against some Ethiopian guy, a couple of years back. Maybe it was an off night, but you only had to touch his chin and he hit the deck.

Should Frank Bruno have been an option?

stu

I don't think Bruno had that bad a chin. If you look at the fights he lost, it was usually the ref stopping it with him against the ropes not throwing punches.

You failed to list Morrison or Grant. Of the ones that you listed its OBVIOUSLY RJJ.

Of all the fighters that were heavyweight champ, Floyd Patterson has to be it. He was knocked down like 20 times in his career.

He got KOed once and KDed as many or more times than Wlad did.

Bruce Seldon should be up there as well. Patterson got knocked down more than any other hvy champ, but at least he got up more often than not. Same can't be said for some other "coughLennoxcough" fighters. :D

packed a hell of a punch but yeah didn't take them as good. He'd unload and have his guy on the brink of getting knocked out before getting dropped by a punch or two.

Im suprised that Lennox Lewis is leading the votes with the worst chin as he took bombs from Tyson, Holyfield etc and was still standing and beat them both!

From the people listed I would say Herbie Hide. (Not sure that RJJ should be there since as a HW he never been down).

I thought that RJJ doesn't belong there because he's not a heavyweight. Of course he has the weakest jaw there because he's not a heavyweight.

I'm glad to see that people are taking this seriously enough to join in. As someone who fell away from boxing in the mid-late 90s I never saw Grant or Morrison. Byrd I put on just to stir it up.

Lewis took Tyson bombs? Was that when he was holding?

TheFairPole
11-19-2004, 08:28 PM
Tyson never even landed a punch on Lewis!!! Morrison had a really weak chin, so does Maskaev!!! But they both throw bombs. That's why they were fun to watch!!! Grant has to be #1 now!!!

First of all it's rediculous to even have RJJ on this list of glassed jaw heavyweights. The guy had 1 freakin fight at that weight and he won. Never touched the canvas.

Secondly, the obvious choice is Lewis. He should get one of those medic alerts because he falls and he can'tm get up. :p

Jorge Luis Gonzalez

The one that got KTFO by Riddick Bowe.Mike Tyson Look-a-Like Clifford Couser(5'11) brutally Kayoed Gonzalez(6'7).Trust me,Cliff Couser is nothing more than a Journeyman with some power, and Gonzalez's weak chin made him look alot like 80's Mike Tyson

11-27-2004, 05:50 AM
T. Morrison didn't have a great chin but it certainly wasn't the worst, his loss to Ray Mercer is still one of the most brutal ko's I have ever seen but he still technically was'nt down or out. Granted he was slumped in the corner being held up by the ropes and punches, and he was half dead, But not out cold :D. But M. Grant imo has to be my choice getting knocked down by the very first punch in his fight with Jameel was awful and breaking his ankle on the way down topped it off :p I never could understand how anyone was ever able to convince him he was a contender.

Wlad never went the distance with Tua or any other power puncher for that matter. Did Wladimir fight Ike Ibeabuchi when both were prospects? . . .didn't think so.

Patterson's chin wasn't that bad. The KD count is misleading b/c the majority of those were in the first Johannson fight, and under modern standards that fight would've been stopped after the 2nd knockdown. And Johannson while not a great fighter could crack! Floyd also went the distance with Bonavena and Quarry. Wlad Klitschko or Michael Grant could never dream of going the distance against those two.
My first vote goes to Grant, Wlad is #2.

He didn't look so bad earlier on, but now he gets floored every time someone looks at him.

This is a silly thread.

I just don't see Wlad having a glass jaw. I think Wlad had stamina problems whatever their cause was, but not a glass jaw.

Coming in cold and unprepared, he did get beaten by Corrie. Unfortunate mistake, but what's the big deal?

Lewis has been KOed by a single punch, which never happenned to Wlad. Does that make Lewis a glass jaw fighter?

Name me one instance in which Wladimir has taken a good shot from a good puncher and not gotten hurt? He was wobbled by Brewster in the 3rd round of their match (and that had nothing to do with stamina), he was knocked down by a glancing right hand from Williamson, he was put into cloud 9 by one Sanders left hand. And Sanders can hit hard, but the guy is no David Tua. Plenty of other guys have taken his left hand and not gone completly out of it like Wlad did. Add in the fact he had a whole rd to recover and got knocked down by the first punch thrown in the 2nd, and I'd say his whiskers are pretty poor.

Watch the first round of Wlad/Jefferson, and then get back to me. You're right Sanders is no David Tua. Tua wished he had Sanders KO %. Sanders's record since 8/5/95 is 13-2 with 12 KO's.

KO% percentage means jack **** considering Sander's OPPOSITION and HIS LEVEL OF ACTIVITY. Tua 1st rd victim Phil Jackson was better then anyone Sanders beat until he KO'd Wladmir in 2003. Sanders knocks out Tua??? That doesn't even deserve comment.
Wlad-Jefferson- Derrick hits him with ONE punch-his offense in that fight was laughable, he threw the widest most telegraphed punches I've ever seen. Wow Wlad must have a great chin b/c he withstood a punch he saw from a mile away . . .

You clearly said to name an instance in which Wlad was hit with a good punch by a good puncher, and I pointed out one suhc occurance. Tua's only decision win during the same time period that I named for Sanders was Jeff Wooden. Are you really going to sit here and tell me that Jeff Wooden is better that everyone Sanders faced. I would say that everyone (or nearly everyone) Sanders faced during that time period is better than Jeff Wooden. Sanders also KD Rahman which was something that Tua couldn't do.

In fact it's closed... I'd forgotten I'd put a time limit on it.

So Wlad "blow and he's over" Klitschko won it, with 25.42% of the vote. Runner up was Roy Jones (silly option, I agree in hindsight) and "other", mainly Tommy Morrison it seems.

Joint third in line were Herbie Hide and Clifford Ettiene... so we don't think Lennox was so bad then?

Lastly, the only one to escape blame was Chris Byrd. I admit, I just put him in to mix it up a bit, and it's nice to see he's vindicated here.
