A few months back this was all over the news - the few sightings they found in the southwest of this animal.

Looks like a genetic defective coyote. Wonder if someone's playing in a lab. That animal can't survive in the wild because of its teeth...

One theory I heard was that Texas has some of the best college labs out there and someone might have been playing with breeding to try to duplicate the storied beast.

It got some minutes on Coast to Coast AM radio show and articles on the rense.com website...

Did you guys watch the video link that went along with the article? They showed the back of it and it had a pointy tail just like a devil, and it had wings too!

Neils, this was a different story then the coyote-like one! That one didn't have wings!

it "looks like a gargoyle and has these sponge like lips"...sound slike some kind of prehistoric stingray or something...maybe if it can get those sponge like lips on some blood it'll come back to life. wouldn't that be scary
...speaking of lips, for some reason it reminds me of angelina jolie, she's got enormous lips

I know what Neils is talking about though
The messed up dog like thing was pretty freaky
This is just plain scary, espically if it is a chubacapra
I always pictured one of those to be like 4 foot though

STRANGE ANIMAL
By: TONATENI HAIMBODI Date: 2005-02-14

A strange animal that has been haunting the Onawa Ya Kiliana village in the Oshakati East Constituency, since last year was killed early this week.

However, nobody including local wildlife officials, seems to know what type of animal it is.

It has been blamed for the death of number of domestic animals at the village since the beginning of last year.

Villagers and others from different towns and villages came to take a closer look at the dead animal. Most of them said they had never seen such an animal before.

The elderly and officials from the environment and tourism ministry also failed to identify the animal. It had been reportedly killing dogs and chickens and suck out their bloods without eating their meat.

However, the villagers were happy that the animal which has been haunting them was finally dead.

Some of them claimed that the animal was probably a domesticated one apparently because it was clean, suggesting that someone was taking good care of it and that also did not run fast enough when it was attacked and killed. One of the villagers explains what has been happening when this strange animal started attacking their domestic animals at the village.

“ That animal was moving along the gravel road and stopped at one of the homesteads. We went after it, tracing its footprints. But we soon realised that it was not a dog.”

Although the animal has been blamed for killing domestic animals at the village, the fact is---another endangered species may have wiped off from the face of the earth.

That was something completely different, and if I remember right they turned out to be a family of foxes/coyotes with mange.

Creature ID'd as coyote, not chupacabra

Fri Nov 2, 4:48 PM ET

SAN MARCOS, Texas - The results are in: The ugly, big-eared animal found this summer in Cuero is not the mythical bloodsucking chupacabra. It's just a plain old coyote.

Biologists at Texas State University announced Thursday night that they had identified the hairless doglike creature.

San Antonio television station KENS provided a tissue sample from the animal for testing.

"The DNA sequence is a virtually identical match to DNA from the coyote (Canis latrans)," bioligist Mike Forstner said in a written statement. "This is probably the answer a lot of folks thought might be the outcome. I, myself, really thought it was a domestic dog, but the Cuero Chupacabra is a Texas Coyote."

Phylis Canion and some of her neighbors discovered the 40-pound bodies of three of the animals over four days in July outside her ranch in Cuero, 90 miles southeast of San Antonio. Canion said she saved the head of the one she found so she could get to get to the bottom of its ancestry through DNA testing and then mount it for posterity.

Forstner said the testing provided an opportunity to demonstrate how science answers questions.

Chupacabra means "goat sucker" in Spanish, and it is said to have originated in Latin America, specifically Puerto Rico and Mexico.

"This is fun, not scary, but if people are worried about the chupacabra, it is probably even more important that we explain the mystery," he said. "Folks can fear what they don't understand, and a big part of the goal in science is to explain the natural world."

He said additional skin samples have been taken to try to determine the cause of the animal's hair loss.
