View Full Version : About HBO boxing.. jack_the_rippuh 02-11-2005, 10:56 PM In your opinion, was HBO boxing better with George Foreman as the third wheel? Arrington 02-11-2005, 10:57 PM damn yes. He is a helluva of a lot better than RJJ MWCOFSU 02-11-2005, 11:21 PM damn yes. He is a helluva of a lot better than RJJ you gotta have something against RJJ to say that Foreman did a better job as 3rd man. I loved Foreman and defended him everytime he made a doofus statement. But that fact remains he still made at least 5 idiotic statements per telecast. IF he should ever come back, it should only be to beat Merchant's ass. RJJ knows his stuff. he can mumble sometimes, but he's less of an idiot than big George. jack_the_rippuh 02-11-2005, 11:25 PM you gotta have something against RJJ to say that Foreman did a better job as 3rd man. Yeah, but that's what kind of made HBO boxing good, If the fight was boring the commentating would always be good...it's like you could never go wrong with HBO boxing when Big George, Lampley, and Merchant were doing the telecast.. julDilla 02-11-2005, 11:28 PM i bet that even foreman himself didnt know what the hell he was talking about nezahualcoyotl 02-11-2005, 11:30 PM i bet that even foreman himself didnt know what the hell he was talking about Yup - big george was a lovable big goofball...RJJ is 2 egotistical and narcissicitsldkfjaskldjfalskfd lolz. julDilla 02-11-2005, 11:33 PM it would be funny how larry keep questiong what the hell he meant by what he has just said Tha Greatest 02-11-2005, 11:34 PM i think george n rjj should alternate Stickman 02-11-2005, 11:39 PM Yep, I miss George too. He cracked me up constantly, and as silly as he'd sometimes get, he always had something insightful to say about the fighters themselves. I get all nostalgic now, when I watch some of the fights I have on tape where George is still with HBO. <sniff> ;) jack_the_rippuh 02-11-2005, 11:47 PM Why did George leave and is there ever going to be a chance of him coming back? julDilla 02-11-2005, 11:49 PM Why did George leave and is there ever going to be a chance of him coming back? i think Jones got a huge contract so i highly doubt it, but i cant forget larry's words, what do you mean by that george? hahaha he would always be telling him that Slipx 02-11-2005, 11:50 PM i was wondering the same thing. hopefully he didnt get booted off, i enjoyed having him on the show !!Captain 02-12-2005, 12:00 AM At least I could understand everything Foreman said. loangunZ 02-12-2005, 12:16 AM I thought he left to try and get back in the ring. George said he wouldn't comeback if lewis was in the ring and now since he is gone maybe he is going to stepin again. I really miss him he added something extra in the comedy department whether it was intentional or not. Eyeh8you 02-12-2005, 12:24 AM I think RJJ is alot better and makes a good comentator! I did like George but he gone now & Roy knows his ****. Plus i like how Roy always corrects Larry its kinda funny! Shaolin Bushido 02-12-2005, 12:25 AM In your opinion, was HBO boxing better with George Foreman as the third wheel? No. They've lost nothing without George's babbling and "expert commentary". Hell, he didn't deliver too much information even in the pulpit! He was a fighter. HOFame. Announcer. Run of the mill. Shaolin Bushido 02-12-2005, 12:26 AM At least I could understand everything Foreman said. You must speak in tongues then. Discernment is your gift. enadeus 02-12-2005, 01:11 AM Roy Jones is like John Madden. He's terrible. But then again, my friends and I when we watch hbo boxing, we listen in to see what stupid thing he is going to say next. The guy says one line every round. julDilla 02-12-2005, 01:14 AM Roy Jones is like John Madden. He's terrible. But then again, my friends and I when we watch hbo boxing, we listen in to see what stupid thing he is going to say next. The guy says one line every round. same thing goes for foreman, hbo are to bias joeboxer 02-12-2005, 01:19 AM Do you remember what George said in the Vargas vs Trinidad fight when Vargas getting a break cause Tito just hit him in the balls, Vargas's manager was yelling at him to stay and take all 5 min of rest and George was like "Imagine that, a woman trying to give advice to a boxer" It was the funniest thing ever. paulmmv 02-12-2005, 01:21 AM oh my gosh yes foreman does a much better job then any of the other 3th man does Mech. 02-12-2005, 03:04 AM Why did George leave and is there ever going to be a chance of him coming back? I remember watching that fight in which he announced he was leaving, he said something about wanting to spend time with his grand kids and buying an RV, he seemed pretty intent on leaving for good. But i think it was implied he was leaving to develop a super dupper XXL foreman grill. but i dont miss foreman, i guess he made me laugh too, but laughing at him was a little distracting, and Rjj seems to me like he knows what hes talking about, and there always jim lampley to keep things refreshing. Now when HE retires, mayweather fights get that much less exciting. marvdave 02-12-2005, 07:32 AM I preferred Gil Clancy, but he is probably too senile now. As far as Gorge and "Third person" Jones goes, I prefer Foreman. but they seem to be equally annoying. George made me laugh more, so thats why I would prefer him Kornhusker 02-12-2005, 08:11 AM I would like to see how Sean O' Grady could do with that job. I thought he was damn good on USA TNF's. Stickman 02-12-2005, 08:15 AM I preferred Gil Clancy, but he is probably too senile now. As far as Gorge and "Third person" Jones goes, I prefer Foreman. but they seem to be equally annoying. George made me laugh more, so thats why I would prefer him Another one I was impressed with was Chris Byrd. Much better than Jones. More intelligent (not hard, that one...my lab is smarter), far more understandable than Jones (again...so is my lab), and pretty funny sometimes too. I'm not a fan of his boxing, but I'd far rather see him as 3rd man than Jones. marvdave 02-12-2005, 08:19 AM I would like to see how Sean O' Grady could do with that job. I thought he was damn good on USA TNF's. Tuesday night fights was the last of the TV Boxing shows. Always had good fights on with name fighters. Damn do I miss that show. Every week I looked forward to that. marvdave 02-12-2005, 08:21 AM Another one I was impressed with was Chris Byrd. Much better than Jones. I'm not a fan of his boxing, but I'd far rather see him as 3rd man than Jones. I also thought Byrd did well. He has a job after his boxing career is over. Hopefully for us Boxing fans, he will be starting his new career soon :D Kornhusker 02-12-2005, 08:30 AM Tuesday night fights was the last of the TV Boxing shows. Always had good fights on with name fighters. Damn do I miss that show. Every week I looked forward to that. Me too, I would gladly trade espn fnf for tnf on usa. marvdave 02-12-2005, 08:46 AM Me too, I would gladly trade espn fnf for tnf on usa. espn is ok becuase its all we got..but it doesn't come close to TNF. Stickman 02-12-2005, 09:07 AM espn is ok becuase its all we got..but it doesn't come close to TNF. True, it's all we have. And what happened to Tuesday Night Fights, by the way? They were just suddenly gone, and I found myself with no reason to drink during the week, and completely without warning. Am I the only person who thinks that a "Boxing Channel" would go over big worldwide? There is no reason at all that we shouldn't be able to watch boxing from around the world, almost 24 hours a day. Jesus Christ, NASA has a 24 hour broadcast on DirecTV...why don't we have a boxing station? Tha Greatest 02-12-2005, 11:41 AM What about Vitali Klitschko as a commentator for hbo..... tracylee 02-12-2005, 12:48 PM In your opinion, was HBO boxing better with George Foreman as the third wheel? Although I didnt think I would, I kinda miss big George! I think he did much better than Jones does, and atleast he could make a person laugh from time to time with the off the wall stuff he'd say. And the spats with Merchant are legendary (and sorely missed!!) tracylee 02-12-2005, 12:49 PM What about Vitali Klitschko as a commentator for hbo..... Youre joking, right?? jack_the_rippuh 02-12-2005, 01:10 PM Chris Byrd sound so much like a geek he sounds arrogant. Do you ever hear his interviews? tracylee 02-12-2005, 01:16 PM Chris Byrd sound so much like a geek he sounds arrogant. Do you ever hear his interviews? I get the impression that alot of his arrogance isnt real...that he is just desperately trying to 'goad' someone..anyone, into fighting him. Could be wrong about that, but that is the impression I get. Tha Greatest 02-12-2005, 02:00 PM Youre joking, right?? Ya...I am...hell no i dont want klitschko but that would be funny tracylee 02-12-2005, 02:12 PM Ya...I am...hell no i dont want klitschko but that would be funny He'd be too hard to understand, for me anyway :o Having the disrespectful merchant and the cheerleading Lampley are bad enough!!! ;) QueenCity 02-12-2005, 03:52 PM Personaly I thought Foreman was the perfect complement to Lampley and Merchant, I'd like to see him back joeboxer 02-12-2005, 04:00 PM Larry Merchant: So what do you think of the fighters tonight Vitali? Vitali: He took away my dream of fighting Mike Tyson, now I gunna take... Larry Merchant: No, Vitali. This fight what about these fighters? Vitali: Lennox Lewis promised me a re-match, I wish he would live up to ... Larry Merchant: God damn it Vitali this is a middleweight fight, will you talk about these fighters! Vitali: Ya, sorry Larry. It's just that its the dream of the Klitchcos to both be world heavyweight champs at the same time. Larry: Will someone get Roy Jones back in here? Vitali: I play chess. Larry: Or even big George. dafrza3 02-12-2005, 06:46 PM I liked George and i like jones. But i liked that George would take control at times away from merchant and lampley and go off on his own. Merchant and lampley seemed to act like they were the draw and who the fans at home wanted to hear. I dont remember many memorable moments from lamp and merchant but plenty from george. marvdave 02-12-2005, 06:50 PM Personaly I thought Foreman was the perfect complement to Lampley and Merchant, I'd like to see him back "no more beer for you Queen City" ;) scap 02-12-2005, 07:12 PM I can not understand for the life of me why HBO never gave Iran Barkley a shot at the job....he is easily one of the smartest fighters the game has ever seen and his insight into the sport would be incredible... If not Barkley than maybe Hearns-Hearns is also a brilliant man that could certainly bring a lot to the table! vB Martin 02-12-2005, 07:19 PM Jones reminds me too much of Bill Walsh during his short career as an expert commentator for football. "Wow. Did you see that play?" "Yeah. Back when I designed that play at the 49ers blah blah blah" I generally tune Roy out. George made some stupid statements, but they only added to the entertainment value. phallus 02-12-2005, 07:24 PM Personaly I thought Foreman was the perfect complement to Lampley and Merchant, I'd like to see him back yeah, in a way, this is true, alongside the drunken larry merchant and big george foreman, RJJ adds awesome entertainment value to HBO, although, i guess they could just as well have Zab Judah there talking ****, or better yet James Toney - i'd love to see him at ringside talking trash about all the fighters and making up nicknames for them joeboxer 02-12-2005, 07:44 PM What about Bernard Hopkins, that's expert analysis. tyson 02-12-2005, 07:55 PM What about Bernard Hopkins, that's expert analysis. It really just pisses me off when a government thinks they get to arbitrarily decide what the people are able to do with their lives. The US isn't quite as bad, yet, but it could happen in the next 20 or 30 years, if the politically correct bull**** isn't somehow stopped. Super_Lightweight 02-12-2005, 10:40 PM Yall are some whiny *******s. Man, you act like a bunch of sissies with your picky asses. Both George and Roy are good in their own way. They both have things not to like, but nothing that demands the level of whining that some people in this thread have done. Babies.
