View Full Version : "Know thyself"

Sounds simple enough, but apparently it's not as easy as it sounds. At least not for me, I thought that I'd do almost anything, professionally speaking, if the money was right, but I was wrong. I accepted a job with a multi-national firm that added 30k to my salary and I thought that would be enough to make me happy.....but I was wrong. One month into it I quit. Luckily, my old job took me back, but the cat's out of the bag about me looking around for other opportunities and now the company I've been with for almost 4 years is pissed at me. My office lease and contract are up at the end of March and who knows if they'll want to resign. I have 2 interviews on Thursday so I guess we'll have to see. I gotta say though, my misjudgement of myself did rattle me, after I quit I spent a week drunk in a hotel room second guessing my decision. I still do a bit, but what's done is done. For the most part I still think I made the right decision going with my instincts, but DAMN, this would have put me in a different tax bracket. Oh well. Remember people, "know thyself". It's important.

You're right. It isn't as easy as it sounds. I'm still searching for myself as my kids are growing up and moving on. Thankfully I am aware of it and am starting to prepare for the next stage of my life, but I'm still not sure who "I" am. I've been busy being "Mom" and "Wife".

Good luck in your search Blue

You too MCM. I never gave it to much thought, but sometimes something happens that make us re-evaluate our thoughts. Kinda weird, now I'm sorta doubting all sorts of beliefs I've held for a long time. Oh well, I guess I'll just ride this out and what happens, happens.

Yea man, the brutal fact is that happiness is not found in money or social-status like Hollywood constantly tells us. It’s found deeper than that, less superficial; and if you continually look to define yourself by those things, you’re always going to come down hard. Also, I wish I could tell you a 12-step program that you have to do to “know” yourself; but the reality to that lie, is that knowing yourself is a life-long pursuit – we’re always learning, always defining who we are, always creating, always feeling. It’s a process that doesn’t end until the day you die, but at least now you can stop looking for the “defined steps” and start realizing that this is a life-long pursuit.

so what was wrong w/ the new job?

I work in Finance and Insurance and this job was as a district manager for a day labor company. Meaning that they hire felons including murderers and sex offenders. In the month I was there I had to go to sites where a a roofer fell and got killed, a machinist cut of all his fingers, and a seious fight happened because some dumb**** placed a child molestor with the father of the 12 year old girl he molested. In fact, I had to drive the sex offender to work at different sites on a few occasions. Big mother****er, kinda looked like a clean shaven Kimbo Slice. BTW, if you're wondering why they hire felons, it's because you get bonuses from the government placing unemployable felonious types that NO ONE else will hire except other day labor companies. Also, there's some skilled felons out there, machinists, carpenter's, forklift operators that often would make $15-$20 an hour, but this company would only pay them $7.25-$9.00 an hour(and we bill the client 2-3 times what we pay the employee)the and if they gave you any lip you just call they're P.O. to complain and back the big house for them. It's big, very profitable business. The other managers from other districts had stories about guys that failed the pre-empolyment psyche profile keying their cars, coming to work with guns threatening the manager because they were pissed about about not being qualified to do even the lowest, most unskilled grunt work on the planet. Oh, and I got to witness a guy get a stroke from smoking too much crack in our bathroom. **** like that is why they offer such a good compensation package. 54k a year base salary plus commission over rides(which is where you make MOST of your money, car and cell phone allowance, 2 paid weeks first year, 3 for the 2nd year and all the other big company perks). It sounded great to me until I was there, than every fiber of my being said to get the **** out of there. Oh well. It was just gross people that I would have had to work with on a daily basis (and not just the candidates, lot's of my co-workers were kinda shifty, shady characters). I guess I just didn't want to let that element into my life.

P.S. Bzob, I know I'm whining, but your sole purpose in life is to listen and nod sympathetically.

That job isn't worth the money.

Hope you find a new one QUICK!!!

Oh yeah, that' s terrible. We've got some openings at the Jail and Work Release for probably a fraction of the pay and twice as many crackheads.

Believe me, your present options will probably look a tad better after you consider this ****.

Money isn't everything.

I know, an old cliche, but nonetheless, very true.

Not my style, I didn't want to let that **** into my life. At the end of the day I guess I thought I was too good for them, maybe I'm a snob. Oh well, I don't care. Anyway, turns out that not taking that road was the best decision I ever made. I decided to go for the brass ring in my industry and applied @the 2 biggest and best executive search firms in Portland and got offers for considerably more. I'm pretty ****ing exstatic right now. Follow your instincts people! This might be even more important than knowing thyself. Kinda reminds me of the matrix 2 where the oracle tells neo that he already made his decision, now he just has to understand why he made it. I barely slept last night I was so excited. My current boss is gonna be ****ing pissed when I leave.
