The fertility cults of the Ancient World didn’t always see the sexual act to be in correlation with the birth of the baby. They knew that they were related somehow, but didn’t always see the correlation between the now-defined cause and effect. Nonetheless this didn’t bother them too much since they were more-so embracing the power of the fertility itself, of creating, (or bringing into creation out of nothing; hence, the lure of the power behind it). Many assume also, that fertility cults are worshipping the woman; on the contrary, the nature was animal, nature, and crops – as well as the human female. Thus fertility in general was thought to be the most powerful form of worship imaginable – which is one reason many old gods are in fact goddesses.
