O peruano Tony de Souza ficou muito famoso no Brasil após sua luta contra Luiz Azeredo no Meca 11, onde teve toda torcida ao seu lado. Direto de Lima, no Peru, onde dá aulas em 3 academias, Tony nos concedeu esta rápida entrevista.
Como você avalia o ano de 2004 na sua carreira?
O ano passado foi muito bom pra mim, fiz lutas bem interessantes. Eu gosto de lutar no Brasil, porque é aí que tem os melhores lutadores do mundo.
E sua luta contra o Azeredo no Meca? A torcida brasileira ficou do seu lado.
A luta contra o Luiz Azeredo foi muito boa para mim, porque eu conquistei o público brasileiro. Na verdade eu não sabia que a torcida era pra mim, só fiquei sabendo depois da luta quando me contaram.
Em seguida você lutou contra o Carlinhos Lima no Jungle Fight 3...
Nessa luta eu fui muito mais relaxado. Meus treinos ficaram muito bons antes da luta, e na hora do combate eu escutei meu treinador André Pederneiras e fiz tudo que ele falou.
Você já teve uma passagem pelo UFC, certo?
Sim, fiz 3 lutas lá. O UFC foi no começo da minha carreira como lutador. Eu gostei muito, pois o Ultimate é um grande show.
E como são os treinos na sua equipe, a Nova União?
Sempre tenho uma nova experiência quando treino lá. Os atletas são muito técnicos e o Dedé é um grande treinador. É um bom lugar para aprender quem você é como lutador.
O André Pederneiras é muito importante como seu treinador, não é mesmo?
Sem dúvidas, o Dedé como treinador é um dos melhores do mundo, ele é uma pessoa excelente. Ele tem um jeito que deixa você tranqüilo e te trata com respeito e amizade. Ele manda bem nos treinos e sempre escuta os atletas, e se a gente tiver um problema, ele faz o necessário pra que a gente fique bem.
O que você achou da derrota do Shaolin no Shooto?
O Shaolin é um cara que vive pra lutar. Fiquei triste por ele ter perdido, mas sei que ele vai analisar sua derrota e voltar ao ringue disposto a dar porrada em todo mundo. Ele vai seguir aprendendo como todo grande campeão.
Parece que seu companheiro de equipe, o João Roque, vai disputar o título do Shooto contra o Alexandre Pequeno. O que você acha dessa luta?
É uma luta que a gente tem esperado há muito tempo. Conheço os dois lutadores, são ótimas pessoas. Espero que o João ganhe, mas vai ser uma luta dura para os dois.
E como estão os planos para 2005?
Eu vou lutar aqui no Peru em abril no South American Open Championship. Vou enfrentar o Angelo Dias, ele é um lutador da seleção peruana e já é experiente no vale tudo, tem 8 vitórias e nenhuma derrota. Talvez eu lute no Jungle Fight em março.
Alguma mensagem para seus fãs?
Que fiquem ligados no espetáculo que é o vale tudo. E que respeitem os lutadores que entram no ringue, pois essa pessoa, ganhando ou perdendo, já vai ser uma pessoa melhor só por entrar no ringue. E em fevereiro estarei treinando no Brasil.

How did you see your career in the year 2004?
Last year was a very good year for me with many interesting fights. I love to fight in Brazil because they have the best fighters in the world.
What about your fight against Azeredo, everyone was rooting for you.
That was a very good fight for me because I conquered the Brazilian audience. To tell you the truth I didn't know they were rooting for me until after they fight when someone told me.
Following that you fought Carlinhos Lima in Jungle Fight 3
That was a more relaxed fight. My training went well and I listened to Andre Pederneiras in everything that he had to say.
You also fought in the UFC, right?
Yes, three fights overthere. In the UFC I started my career as a fighter. I liked it a lot, the UFC is a great show.
And how is the training going with Nova Uniao?
I always have a different expirience training there. The athletes are extremely technical and DEDE is a great trainer. Great place to find out how are you as a fighter.
Pederneiras is very important as a trainer to you, isn't he?
Without a doubt, Dede as a trainer is one of the best in the world and is an excellent person. He treats everyone with respect and very friendly, he listens to the fighters.
What do you think about Shaolin's lost in Shooto?
Shaolin lives to fight. I was sad that he lost but I know that he is gonna analize this lost and he's gonna comeback to beat everyone in the world. He is gonna keep on learining like the champion he is.
Joao Roque is gonna face Pequeno Noguiera for the title, your thoughts?
This is a fight that people have been waiting for a long time. I know both fighters, but I hope Joao comes out with the win. Difficult fight for both.
How are the plens for 2005?
I am gonna fight here in Peru in April in the South American Open Championship. I am gonna be facing Angelo Dias, a fighter with the peruvian team with vale tudo experience; he is 8-0. I might be fighting in Jungle Fight in March.
Any message to your fans?
Keep supporting MMA; give the fighters respect because that person, winning or losing, is a better man just for stepping into that ring. I will be training in Brazil in February.
