When I started out, I was hoping to see films from a wide variety of places, but as it's turned out so far, I've mostly been watching Italian, French and Japanese cinema. With that in mind, I took the opportunity to watch Lights in the Dusk when I saw it was on TV last night.
Although it received a lot of good reviews, this just wasn't my kind of thing.
It's about a man who lives alone and works a security job, but dreams of running his own company. He isn't too bright, and so this plan doesn't get off the ground. He meets a woman and they start a relationship. It quickly becomes clear that she has gotten close to him only as a way of stealing from a jewelry shop that he does security for.
None of the characters in this film are likeable. There's the easily-manipulated idiot, the seemingly amoral ***** who pretends to like him in order to exploit him, the gangster who tells the ***** what to do, and the woman who runs a hot dog stand and is not given any kind of character development.
Not much of interest happens. I get that there's apparently a point to it, but more than an hour of boring pointlessness in order to show that someone's life is boring and pointless...no thank you. If a film is great to watch, and also has a message-maybe something satirical, political or philosophical- then that's great, and it can make it an even better film. But this is a **** film to begin with, and there's no great message here anyway, just a comment on a particular type of loser.
I'm not sure if this is the worst film I've seen recently. Melissa P was bad from the start, whereas this seemed OK at first. This film had an even worse main character though. Both are stupid, easily-manipulated idiots, but at least Melissa P had nice tits.
