Mr. Beelzebub 01-26-2005, 01:48 PM Lennox Lewis Denies Reports, Will Stay Retired LONDON (AP) - Lennox Lewis may not be making a comeback after all. Almost a year after he retired, former world heavyweight champion told the tabloid Sunday Mirror he wanted to get back into the ring in November to fight Vitali Klitschko, holder of the WBC title he relinquished. Now the father of a baby daughter, Lewis said he was tired of hearing Klitschko saying that the former champion was scared to fight him again. Later Sunday, however, Lewis released a statement saying he was not making a comeback. "I want to reiterate what I said when I retired in February 2004 that I was fortunate to leave the sport on my own terms and that I will be one of the few heavyweight champions in history to retire on top and stay retired," he said. Lewis and Klitschko fought out a bloody contest in June 2003 when challenger Klitschko lost on bad cuts after dominating the champion for six rounds. That was Lewis' last fight and he was booed out of the ring after a poor performance against the Ukrainian, who demanded a rematch. Lewis's earlier comments strongly suggested he would attempt a comeback. "I've had to listen to a lot of rubbish from Klitschko and he is starting to get on my nerves," said Lewis, who is now 39 and has a 41-2-1 record. "I'm making a comeback later this year. The money is up to 21 million pounds ($39.3 million US) right now and I simply can't turn that much cash down. "I'm going to start training seriously and I'm going back to England to start sorting this out," said Lewis, who lives in Jamaica's Montego Bay. "I need the money just like everyone else and it's just too good to turn down." Lewis was born in London but raised in Kitchener, Ont., and as an amateur won a gold medal for Canada at the 1988 Olympics. Well, so much for that story. |
