View Full Version : Getting started
SuckPump 07-02-2009, 01:39 AM wsup guys, I had a question about the sport and figured to come here for some guidance; i've always been interested in boxing, i feel its the purest form of sporting. two men fighting in a ring. i think thats the reason i've always been drawn to it. anyway im 18 now and i wanted to atleast take a couple boxing classes if just to fulfill my interest. so i was wondering what it is like and how i would be introduced to the sport in a gym/club whatever.
you walk into a gym and prove to the trainers that your not wasting their time. Everything else should fall into place.
Dynamite Glove 07-04-2009, 09:07 AM before you go...understand that this place you want to join is a place, where, if it's any good, alot of guys have 'came and gone'...when I say that, I mean alot of guys came thinking they would become a champion, or whatever their goal and dream was...and it got demolished by a rough sparring session, enough to where they never returned...I've seen it happen...essentially, it's a place where dreams are destroyed and forged, in simultaneous fashion...
Do situps and pushups, and run for a month or two...
Show up in some kind of shape...because if the gym is any good, and you aren't in great condition, you will look and perform horribly.
If you get asked to spar, do it immediately...everyone talks about how you shouldn't spar early but it's all bull****...if ypu get knocked down three times, get back up again..the coach will notice this!!!
your first experiences with boxing should be harsh...that way, you will have an edge on all of your opponents who had it easy!
Wood23ard 07-04-2009, 05:33 PM No decent coach will put you in sparring where you can get knocked down 3 times early on. That is bull****, they are not going to learn anything at all from it and it will only put them off. You might say 'Oh but the determined ones will come back' Yes ofcourse, but you could also likely loose a potentially very good boxer.
Like the first gym i went to (In australia) i was put in sparring with no headgear after 4 sessions. i got a ****ed up nose and didn't land one punch, what did it teach me? **** all, just made me feel abit disheartened. When i got back to england i joined a gym and didn't spar for 3 months, now i spar twice a week hard and love it
If you're gonna test a newbies will/desire then put them through a tough cardio session. Do not put them in sparring ffs

lol you're definitely a huge ippo fan!
fraidycat 07-04-2009, 06:51 PM This is not some bull**** anime. No coach in his right mind will put you in a full-contact sparring session as a noob. Don't listen to anyone who tells you he will.
If by some freak chance a coach does put you in for full-contact sparring before you're ready -- especially if it's in your first few sessions -- WALK THE HELL AWAY AND FIND ANOTHER GYM. Because that coach is a moron and his boxers are bullies. Go to another gym and then kick their asses in a year.
My advice to new boxers is in my sig, and it's true.
Don't worry about getting in shape, first. Go do it before you lose your nerve. Show them you're strong on the inside, and they'll make you strong on the outside.

sukhenkoy 07-05-2009, 12:17 AM Boxing is a sport, and it has a science behind it just like any other sport. The people that think of and promote it is a ball-busting, senseless, rumble in the ring from day one are foolish. I know people at my gym that have not had a fight for over a year, and only started sparring after about two or three months.
Like one of the posters said, your first boxing sessions should test your will through an intense cardio/strength/endurance workout, not through a disheartening, defenseless ass-kicking. If you are walking through the door to a boxing gym on a regular basis, you know that you will be getting hit in the face and on the body when you spar, so you should wait until you at least have some of the basics down so that you can begin to actually learn and benefit from your sparring sessions.
F l i c k e r 07-05-2009, 12:58 AM This is what you do.
Start working on a fishing boat right. That way your balance will become incredible. Afterwards, shake a tree and with one hand try to catch 10 leaves that fall. Once you do that, go join a gym and throw a straight or a jab at the punching bag. Your power should be incredible by then, you should be able to knock the heavy bag backwards. Once that is done, spar with the best prospect the gym has to offer. No matter how many times you get knocked down, get back up. NO MATTER WHAT. Try to land a jab on his chin. Once you last 3 rounds with your gym's best prospect. You are all set.
Trust me.... I'm a doctor. :biggthump
its a joke serious ****s.
