BTW What do you guys know about synthetic oil? So far I've learned that it costs more than regular oil, by way of a $46 oil change at VW.

I've heard that it lasts longer. Anyone have experience with synthetic oil? I'm thinking Purity might know, cause I'm sure the bimmer uses it too.

Mr. Beelzebub
01-18-2005, 11:51 AM
It is recommended for all new cars, son. It lasts alot longer than regular oil and reduces friction better than regular oil.

Curly Howard
01-18-2005, 12:03 PM
Lasts longer, less friction, no garbage in it. I use it in all my stuff. I use Lucas (http://www.lucasoil.com/products/display_products.sd?iid=25&catid=2&loc=show) in all my older toys too. My Caddi has 200K + on it and still running strong but I'm also a freak about maintenance. I change all the fluids and filters religiously and regular tune ups.

I used to change my oil every 3k miles in the Mustang. Should I change it every 6k miles now with the GTI?

Curly Howard
01-18-2005, 02:05 PM
It all depends on your driving conditions. If you use a synthetic oil and don't drive in the city a lot 5000 miles should be fine. If you idle a lot (traffic lights traffic jams etc.) you might go with 4000 miles. Regular oil I'd go with 3000.

regular oil works just fine. you dont have to spend alot on synbthetic unless you go overtime on your oil changes. once you go synthetic, its not good to switchback to conventional, so get used to 50 dollar oil changes.

change it every 3k with conventional and you're fine.

If new cars were "meant to be changed with synthetic", the manufacturers wouldnt put conventional in them from the start. Either way works fine, just change it as it should be (@3k conventional, @5k synth) and it'll do the job.

im sure someone will disagree though, as everyone has their opinions and beliefs about oil. i was a manager at an oil change place from 19 years old to 23 years old, and i've never learned anything about conventional oil not working if changed on time.
