View Full Version : cardio + calisthenics = foundation of fighting
Kinetic Linking 06-26-2009, 08:33 AM I had this thought the other day that cardio and calisthenics, as fair as exercises go, are the foundation of fighting. If you don't do cardio you're absolutely screwed, and if you don't do calisthenics you're either going to be weak or have poor endurance.
Obviously it's not quite that simple, as just cardio and calisthenics aren't going to make you good. But I think they're a great first step, combined with nutrition, to becoming a successful fighter or athlete of any kind.
Not surprisingly, I've read dozens of times that mike tyson's daily routine had a heavy emphasis on roadwork and calisthenics.
Squirrel 06-26-2009, 08:36 AM Wow, what a startling revelation.
Spartacus Sully 06-26-2009, 09:13 AM Like Push ups? cuz i think push ups are pretty much worthless.
Kinetic Linking 06-26-2009, 12:03 PM yes, like pushups. Tyson claimed to do thousands every day, vic darchinyan claims to do 1500 a day.
I did 400 a day for a period of time and saw a dramatic increase in power and explosiveness.
lanigav 06-26-2009, 02:39 PM I have to do more push ups now, I was too lazy to do them before.
Chr0nic 06-26-2009, 06:23 PM I have to do more push ups now, I was too lazy to do them before.
it honestly kills me, im too ****in lazy for that ****
MKultra 06-26-2009, 07:26 PM If you do your pushups in low rep sets it might not seem as daunting of a task, instead of trying to do like 50 at a time maybe like 25 x 4 with 30 sec rests on your workout days.

:haha: :haha: :haha:
RightCross94 06-26-2009, 09:53 PM i need to do more pushups......
I3C727 06-26-2009, 11:37 PM I didnt think that working the same muscle every day is good for you.

I think spreading the workout throughout the day would help like MKultra said.
ophqui 06-27-2009, 09:07 AM cardio yes, calisthenics no. Im starting to think all i need to do to win fights is run and spar.
Danny_123 06-27-2009, 12:29 PM I've read that about Tyson before, but seriously 1000's of pushups a day, plus all your other training, that just doesnt sound good for you at all.
Sounds like your just setting yourself up for injuries...
....(i know you would work your endurance up to this point)
Plus, if you spread them out over the day, you wouldnt be getting your rest for your muscles for the next days workout....seems like a step backwards seeing as though rest is one of the most important parts to your training.
If anyone can totally reverse my thinking with some good information.....be my guest lol
mathed 06-28-2009, 10:38 PM I'd build up to the point to where you could do sets of 100 and do them at a fast pace and only take 1 minute rests between sets, trust me you'll see the results and your endurance will be tremendous. You need time to recover at least every other day or you will eventually injure yourself.
Jabroni 06-28-2009, 10:48 PM I do six sets of 80 with pushup bars then hit dumbells or bench, but 1000's a day?!? I don't think I could ever do that. But that's why the're world-class athletes.
Spartacus Sully 06-29-2009, 12:35 AM Im still pretty sure their pointless. I mean their good for your shoulders and back but so are pull ups. Their good for your serratus anterior but so are shoulder shrugs and shrugs work your neck. So their good for your intercostals but so are bridges and barbell pull overs and sit ups with your hands over your head. Their really good for your chest Especially the Sternal Head but when your box when do you need to pronate your sternum? I can see some advantages for clinching and perhaps blocking but I think they just make your chest pointlessly over sized.

Mike Tyson style takes alot of stamina so he needs.
Even normal boxers have heavy emphasis on roadwork and calistenics.
I restarted training boxing and just remeber how hard it was.
When I trained boxing I have more respect for all of the boxers even the weak ones. Those people just dont become champion overnight.
