Well, I read of this concept and book by the same title back on one of The Matrix websites. It was written by some french dude, Jean Badrillaud or something like that and I am going to try to explain this **** from my own impression of it though it's been a long time.

Basically, it was the name of the book that Neo took the program he'd written for the guy who came by his house. Remember, "knock,knock"? The reason it was that book in particular is that the matrix was similar to the concept in that the concept calls for a symbol of a Real thing to eventually be accepted so much for so long that it is eventually more Real than the original thing. Whatever that may be. In that respect, the matrix though manufactured was more Real than the world that Zion was in or the machine world or the "desert of the real", the earth's barren landscape.

Here's my own example; Well, there's cootchie. It's hairy and moist and good. Sometimes, alittle stinky. Anyway, there's your hand. Now imagine if you ... used your hand and didn't get any more ... cootchie til eventually you associate the good feelings and sexual excitement you had with ... cootchie to your own hand. If you never got any more cootch or did so infrequently you(theoretically) would begin to accept your fist and masturbating as exciting and attractive as ... cootchie. Your hand would actually be more relevant and meaningful than the real thing! I mean, eventually from all of that your hand would be both hairy and stinky.
