Probably an old question, but is Roy (or was, I should say) faster than Ali with his handspeed?

And those "swish" noises Roy makes when he punches... does his hand speed make them by cutting the air, or is he doing them with his mouth like the bloke out of Police Academy?

His mouth. Like pistons. I dont know if it was sound effects or breathing

I think Ali in his first run as champion (and before) was just a shade quicker.

I kinda thought it was the guy's mouth but isn't making sound effects when you're boxing... a little... well, silly? It IS cool at the same time, though.

Imagine if the guy from Police Academy attended these fights, doing all his crazy ****, counting people out and what have you. The place would be in uproar.

jones is quicker , he weights 30 pounds less , thats why

he makes those noises for a reason, like when you lift weights you breathe properly so you dont waste energy

Jones was definitely quicker, but you gotta remember ali was a much physically bigger man and easily the quickest heavyweight of all time. Jones was quicker but ali was only just slower but his punches were probably twice as powerful when he connected.

At this moment in time Roj jones is faster, no doubt. ;)

At Prime it is still Roj jones. As said before on the thread, ali punches are harder. (and Ali had a better chin)

Roy's hands were definitely faster and he had all around better reflexes, Ali had 10x the chin but I dont know about twice the power he wasnt known for 1 punch knockouts he just hit you so many times, I would have loved to watch the fight though I think it would have been competitive

you know how you exhale when you do a rep when lifting weights, it helps you exert more force. its the same thing with a punch although, jones is the only one ive ever seen to make the sound that drasticly.

the topic should of been, mayweather jr. and r.j. jr. i believe jones was way faster but ali was a bigger man with more pop behind the punch, but no doubt that jones jr is faster than ali

I'd just like to say that this is not the slam dunk everyone might think it is in terms of hand speed.

If you check out Ali clips from the early and mid-60's, you may find some where he puts his rapid fire handspeed on display, and I gotta tell you, it's impressive. As in blindingly fast.

Now I have no doubt that in terms of overall athletic quickness, RJJ takes it over Ali (Roy could launch a punch from 10 feet away and have it explode on his opponent's chin before he could even flinch), but in terms of just sheer handspeed, I don't think it's nearly so clearcut...
