View Full Version : Abolish the upper weight limit...
What are your guys' thoughts on the 260lb limit? Do you think there should be a window for people who are over this weight?
I'd like to see it personally, but only if the fighters actually had skills, not sideshows like Bob Sapp and Hong Man Choi etc...
Kakutogi-Gumi 06-19-2009, 03:22 PM Choi is a TKD and Ssirum champ.

Maybe so, but my that isn't really what I'm getting at....
Move BRICKS™ 06-19-2009, 03:36 PM I would love to see Choi fight in the UFC. Dana would need to bring Fedor in to take the title away from him. Think about it?
Choi via KO R1 over any UFC Heavyweight. Nobody in the UFC Heavyweight division has the skillset needed to beat someone as big and as strong as Choi.

Can't agree with that I'm afraid. Choi would be eaten by most of the top heavies in the UFC. Maybe even a few of the LHW guys as well.
Strength doesn't make a good fighter either. It's a tiny piece of the jigsaw.

the wait limit is actually 265lbs.
I like the weight limit. I always thought that boxing should do the same thing. there aren't many fighters with a whole lot of skill above that weight but if there ever was a fighter that was pretty decent and if he was incapable to make the limit, then I'm sure Dana will make the exception.
Brock gains 20lbs and comes in at 285lbs on fight night. haven't heard of any one above that weight that is any good.

lol, I'm pretty sure this is sarcasm.

But how much effectiveness does Lesnar lose in having to cut the weight? I'd like to see fighter at optimum capacity having to cut, and then put back on doesn't help a fighter.
I'm interested in seeing who is the absolute HARDEST fighter to beat, regardless of size. If you limit the weight, you limit the potential.

To be fair, while I realize that Choi's MMA career has been the product of freekshow fights, his losses did come against Fedor and Crocop in just his 2nd and 3rd fights and he does have legitimate credentials. He easily took Fedor to the ground in good Sserium fashion and he has legitimate stand up as well.
That said, I'm sure he'll continue to be an attraction rather than a competitor in regards to his MMA career.

well, I think the weights were more so because Dana didn't want fighters to look out of shape. like I said in my previous post, if there is a really good fighter over the limit that wouldn't be able to make the 265lbs limit, then I'm sure dana will make the exception.

I can't imagine that being the reason.

He has also lost his last 3 fights.
Nodogoshi 06-19-2009, 05:48 PM He's 2-2 in MMA. The wins were against Bobby Ologun and Jose Conseco.
Ologun is himself a sideshow fighter and is 2-2.

My bad. I was looking at his Wiki page and quoted his Kickboxing record then. I was confused as I didn't check the dates and was thinking "how didn't I know about those fights before" lol.

he wants guys to come in shape but it doesn't stop most of the hw coming into the octagon with guts and back fat

yes, that is the reason. Dana doesn't like out of shape looking fighters so he put a weight limit. it might also be to make fights more fair but he never mentioned that.

like who?
Sandwich 06-22-2009, 06:57 AM Right now there's a 50 pound difference between Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight. I think we'll see another weight class split the two up before we see a 265+ weight class.

60 pounds.
And I highly doubt it. No way could I see 205-265 being split into two weightclasses.

Oops... My bad. :lol1:
I can definitely see it being split. Not for a few years, because the HW division is lacking some talent. But how many 230 pound heavyweights are there?
Big guys like Brock Lesnar who have to cut weight to make 265 lbs have a significant advantage over fighters that are weighing in in the 220's and 230's.

I hear you man, it'd be quite revolutionary actually. I'm not sure if they'll push the envelope as such. You never know though.
