DIEGO CALLS OUT FLORIAN, SAYS "I'M #1 CONTENDER" (http://www.mmaweekly.com/absolutenm/templates/dailynews.asp?articleid=9000&zoneid=4)

Diego Sanchez made a surprise appearance on a Thursday media teleconference promoting the season nine finale of “The Ultimate Fighter.” He wasted little time making waves, calling Kenny Florian out.

Sanchez is set to face Clay Guida in the main event of the show, held Saturday at The Palms’ Pearl Theater in Las Vegas. He characteristically left his title future with the UFC. But in the same breath, he laid the foundation for a rematch with the original TUF alum.

“One of the reasons for me dropping to 155 was the fact that Kenny Florian is coming up on his second title shot, and this is a guy that I walked through four years ago,” said Sanchez. “And everybody thinks that, yeah, we’ve both evolved, we’ve both changed, we’re both different fighters, we’ve both improved a lot. But the fact is that I walked through him and it wasn’t even a fight, and this is the number one contender. So in my mind, I am the number one contender right now.”

Guida says he’s a contender too if he beats Sanchez.

In April 2005, Sanchez and Florian fought for the first Ultimate Fighter crown on a night widely considered to have given birth to the sport’s current popularity. At middleweight, both were fighting heavy; Florian was 30 pounds above scale, while Sanchez was up 15 pounds. The fight was a blowout – Florian later said he “froze” and called the experience a turning point in his career.

Since that fateful night, both fighters have risen, and fallen, in the ranks of UFC contenders. Sanchez made his mark in the welterweight division before two losses in 2007 motivated a drop to lightweight; Florian dabbled once at 170 pounds before making 155 his home.

To sweeten the pot, Sanchez pitched the rematch as an endpoint to coaching spots for the pair on the eleventh season of the reality show.

“I think that if he wins and I win, that would make a great fight for the fans, and possibly two great coaches for the next season after Rashad and Rampage,” he said. “It would be an awesome rematch. He’s going to want a shot at redemption and I want a shot at the title, so it definitely plays out for a good story line.”

Then, Sanchez put another twist in the story. He wants B.J. Penn to retain his title against Florian at UFC 101 in August.

“I’m rooting for B.J. Penn,” he said. “I would like B.J. Penn to win; that’s a guy I’ve always wanted to fight.”

While Sanchez certainly left a lot on the table, his plans would not take focus from this weekend’s fight.

“I’ve got Clay Guida in front of me right now, and that’s the only thing my mind is focused on,” finished Sanchez. “Putting on the best performance of my career, and going in there and actually earning and proving to people that there is a real number one contender here at 155. I’m here for now and I want to dominate.”

For how long – that’s another story.

How I hate that little ****er. :lol1: The Florian fight was at 185 for **** sake which was way too big for Florian. I remember hearing that Kenny only fought at MW because that was the only division they had an opening in so he took it. Florian has gotten really good and I imagine Diego has to cut quite a bit of weight to make 155. If he gets by Guida, which he probably will, I'd love to see him fight Kenny again.

Something about Sanchez just rubs me the wrong way. He is a good fighter though. I respect him as a fighter but I don't like his personality or attitude at all.

Dana White was scouting for talent for the show and was actually gonna ask Drew Fickett to be on the show. Drew was fighting Kenny that night and beat him. But the fact that Kenny was way too small for the division and still went the distance putting up a real good fight that had the judges socring it very close, and that that was only his 3rd fight ever whereas it was Fickett's 25th, Dana went up to him and offered him a shot instead.

Sanchez is basically doing what Dan Hardy is doing at 170. Trying to talk his way up the ranks without having to fight anyone. He thinks because he beat a 168lb when he weighed 183lbs that it makes him the #1 contender to the 155lb title. Yeah he's got some unique logic that's for sure.

Ah, thanks for the info. It's been a while and I was missing the details.

You're right, he is trying to use his name to sneak to the head of the class while the other guys are all fighting each other and earning their way. Get in line buddy. Florian gets a shot at Penn before Sanchez. He's definitely earned it.

Diego spanks Florian even at 155. Diego can take him to the ground and keep him there.

But BJ beats both of them but a fight between Diego and BJ is more competitive.

haven't seen much of Diego, and I did catch his fight at 95 vs Stevenson, but damn he started at Middleweight and dropped all the way down to 155, wow, how much longer does Sanchez expect to remain at Lightweight, as he's a pretty big guy to begin with, and maintaining having to cut down to such a low weight, could take its toll on him.

still I'd rather Diego beat Guida, as in Clay's last bout, IMO he looked more to stall out and hold his way to victory rather than engage and look to land strikes.

but he still won vs Diaz, and I'd like to see a more exciting bout rather than a clinch fest.

Diego is really annoying. I have no doubt he will win tomorrow but other than that I don't see him winning the title.

He has a chip on his shoulder being that he beat Florian on the TUF 1 Finale. But that was at MW and Florian was outclassed and outweighed by Diego. I think Kenny has improved a lot more than Sanchez since that fight.

What funny about Sanchez though, is that he could have fought for the title @ WW had he not been a nutjob and waited for "God" to tell him when the time was.

Sanchez' stand-up is still a little robotic and I think if he fought Florian or BJ he'd be destroyed

sanchez should shut his mouth, kenny's earned his title shot... he beat kenny when both were pretty green and diego weighed 185 and florian 176. at 155 there won't be any weight advantage for sanchez and florian is the smarter fighter
