Running time: 75 minutes
Directed by: Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza
Starring: Manuela Velasco
IMDB rating: 7.8

The film begins with a reporter and her cameraman doing a feature on what happens during the average shift of a fireman. Things start out normal enough, but then they get a call to an apartment block where their night takes a turn for the worse.

I really enjoyed the first half of this. The tension builds up and there are some genuine 'horror' moments (as opposed to just loud, sudden noises intended to make the viewer jump). The second half, however, didn't quite do it for me. This part of the film concerns the attempts of the reporter to escape her predicament. They run up the stairs, and something/someone scares them. Then into a room, time to scream again. The whole time they are doing this, the camera is shaking all over the place.

There are two films that [Rec] reminds me of. The first is Blair Witch Project, for obvious reasons. The second is From Dusk Til Dawn, due to the shift in styles between one half and another. [Rec] isn't quite as stylistically diverse as FDTD, but that's what it reminded me of, which is perhaps due to it having two directors.

A good film, and I'm glad I finally got around to watching something that so many people have recommended to me, but large parts of it just weren't my kind of thing.
