is this common? I do everything righty, but feel more comfortable in southpaw stance??

Should I try and fix this? I know being a southpaw has its advantages. I feel almost as equal righty.

Since you are new to boxing I will tell you what I tell all my fighters. Fight in whatever stance you feel the most comfortable with.

I have this guy in my gym, I train him in boxing but he's an mma fighter. He takes boxing to better his stand up striking in mma. He stands orthodox but says he is a lefty naturally. He stands orthodox because thats what he feels the most comfortable with.

He asked me if he should change stance, I told him no because he should learn the basics in one stance first before trying to take on something else that he's not to familar with.

I usually make them switch anyway, from righty to lefty when doing combo's on the bag or on the mitts or shadow boxing but in the ring when sparring I told him to use what's more comfortable.

In time, if he wants to, I think I could switch him southpaw because that's always tougher on other fighters simply because there aren't many southpaws around but in the meantime while he learns I told him just to be comfortable.

i'm a southpaw, but i've been fighting orthodox more and more in between sparring. i understand what you're saying because opponents always feel a little awkward and cautious when fighting a southpaw. They are a little hesitant, whereas if you feel natural in the stance, u can just get the shots. that's probably how i can explain that feeling to me. Try fighting a southpaw, although even for southpaws, moreover orthodox fighters are expected in front of them. a southpaw fighter against a southpaw also takes a little minute, haha.

Its harder to get fights when your a southpaw and new in the game. Just to let you know.

To your question though. Fight how you feel best. DLH is lefty and fights orthodox. Pacquiao is a right dominant and fights southpaw(he is actually ambidextrous but he chooses to do everything with his right). Personally, I am right handed and love to fight southpaw, I like my lead hand to do all the work.
