Used to, not no more. Just show up and pay your dues on time. The birdman getting a purple proves this.

How do they award belts in BJJ? Do you have tests or does the instructor just say here merry christmas? (or happy Hanukah in Ben's case)

I'm not doubting Ben's ability or anything. He has been training BJJ since I've known him and trains all the time.

I'm just curious how it works. I train BJJ but don't care about ranks and belts for myself. I just train it so I can learn how to beat them in MMA.

Congrats! Some people that train in my area take 3 or 4 years to get a blue belt and 3 or 4 more to get purple....i've been told they sandbag intentionally though lol

Eshifa kept my old instructor at blue belt for 5 years and that was after he won at the pan ams so you must be doing something right.

**** I thought I posted here. Anyways here are my 2 cents.

Ben don't cash in money you dont have yet! I mean that times before many people including Black Belts told me I was getting my Brown Belt and all I got was stripes.

In my opinion a purple belt should have a good understanding of techniques with the gi, we are a BJJ based team, and Ben does not have those skills with the gi yet. However, he does posess great ability with out the Gi and in MMA. To include better at times than some Browns and some Black Belts. Yes I've seen Birman tap a few Black Belts before and give other a good ass run.

If Ben get5s his Purple I will be the first one to celebrate and congratulate him on his great achivement. I'll tell you this if you do get it you will have a huge target on your ass. You area supposed to be better, smarter, more mature, and skilled than most. Therefore everyone want to twist your **** up when you get promoted.

I know all the hard work, sacrifices, hardships, dedication, adn commitment that Ben has for the sport, the art, and the team.

I hope you do get it, but I guess we will find for sure on Friday.

Gi Jiu Jitsu and no Gi grappling is 2 different worlds. There's guys I've rolled with and owned without a gi and then they put the cloth on and beat me silly.

Don't get too bummed out if you don't get it Ben. Like Carlos said, any time you roll with a blue they'll be out to hurt you just so they can say they tapped a purple.

Congrats bro. One of my instructors took him over 5 years to get purple. He's been training 8 and still hasn't moved on (he's had a lot of injuries though). Good luck man.
