Teorema (1968)
Running time: 105 minutes
Directed by: Pier Paolo Pasolini
Starring: Terence Stamp
IMDB rating: 7.2
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063678/
The basic plot of this film is that a young man comes to stay with an Italian family, and seduces them all (male and female) one by one. Then he leaves, and their lives are never the same again.
I had several problems with the film. There is no real seduction, for a start. They all just take it in turns in becoming attracted to him and acting accordingly. He doesn't chat them up or display any charm at all. Early on, there is a scene where they camera zooms in on the bulge in his trousers, showing that he had been blessed in the cock department. Perhaps that's all it took for the whole family to throw themselves at him, I'm really not sure.
The film bored me because there is no character development, no history provided and very little personality on show. Why did the man come to stay with them? No idea. Why did he then leave? No idea. Added to this, there wasn't much dialogue. According to IMDB there are only 923 words spoken in the film, but it felt more like a 10th of that.
This film was boring. Apparently the writer/director was trying to say something, about class or religion or politics or perhaps something else. But I've always felt that the priority of a filmmaker should be to entertain people. Another Italian film, Cemetary Man, is full of symbolism and it's debateable what exactly the creator was trying to say, if anything at all. But it's not that much of a big deal. Why? Because the sex scenes are entertaining, there are violent zombies, a fat retard who can't talk, Death, doppelgangers and a killing spree.
This film has a bunch of characters that you have no reason to care about, spending most of the film doing and saying hardly anything. It's dull and simply not my cup of tea.
My verdict: It stinks!
