View Full Version : I'm Going To Watch 30 Foreign-Language Films In The Next 30 Days

When looking for info on a film that had caught my interest a few days ago, I stumbled upon the blog of someone who had watched 30 horror films in 30 days, reviewing them as he went along. I considered doing the same thing, however I decided that almost all modern horror films are poor quality, predictable and formulaic, and I doubt there are 5 out there that I'd enjoy, let alone 30.

So I decided to be a *** and go with foreign language films.

Some have been excellent (ie. Dutch film The Vanishing), others confusing (ie. Korean film Tell Me Something) confusing, but rarely have I seen one that I'd dismiss as cliched horse****.

I've not decided which 30 to watch yet, but there are quite a few highly regarded ones that I've never got around around to seeing, and my 'possibles' list so far is

[rec](Spanish)
20th Century Boy (Japanese)
Akira (Japanese)
Amélie (French)
Amores Perros (Spanish)
Belle de jour (French)
Betty Blue (French)
City of God (Portugese)
The City of Lost Children (French)
Das Boot (German)
Divine Intervention (Arabic)
El Mariachi (Spanish)
Ghost In The Shell (Japanese)
Il conformista (Italian)
Inside (French)
Irréversible (Italian)
Spirited Away (Japanese)
La Haine (French)
Les Diaboliques (French)
Live Flesh (Spanish)
Metropolis (German)
Mononoke-hime (Japanese)
Mio fratello è figlio unico (Italian)
Noce Blanche (French)
Oldboy (Korean)
The Orphanage (Spanish)
Pan's Labyrinth (Spanish)
Persepolis (Iranian)
Seven Samurai (Japanese)
Shutter (Thai)
Smultronstället (Swedish)
Sympathy For Mr Vengeance (Korean)
Taste of Cherry (Iranian)
Tell No One (French)
The Machine Girl (Japanese)
Three Colours trilogy (French)
Tokyo Story (Japanese)
Ugetsu (Japanese)
Volver (Spanish)
Wandâfuru raifu (Japanese)
Y tu mamá también (Spanish)
Yojimbo (Japanese)

Some of those names are English whereas others are in the original language. I couldn't be arsed to be consistent at this early stage, but I'll do so when it comes to actually posting about them individually.

I'll try and select a wide range, rather than just Spanish and Japanese, which is what I usually go for.

I posted this here because no one ever posts in the E-Ninja section, and they ****ing well should. Also because the vast majority of people 'could care less' if some lad is watching Japanese horror movies, much less if he thinks they're any good, and I hate it when people clog up the forums that people actually care about with self-important ****e.

I'll give each film a rating out of 10, provide a basic plotline, and attempt to do a short review without giving away any key story details by talking about things such as excitement/interest factor, quality of plot, how good the character development was, if I'd shag any of the main actresses etc.

Before I start, just a quick note of my favourite foreign language films:

1. Abre Los Ojos
2. Ichi The Killer
3. Dellamorre Dellamorte (aka Cemetery Man)
4. All About My Mother
5. Let The Right One In
6. Battle Royale
7. Lives Of Others
8. Talk To Her
9. Man Bites Dog
10. Ringu

One that I disliked was Stroszek. There are also a few others that I don't recall right now.
