View Full Version : What is your definition for the term "puncher"
Squabbles94806 06-11-2009, 10:43 AM When boxers or fighters are described as being a "puncher," what definition comes to mind? I always thought it was someone who throws a lot of punches, but then later i've heard the term being defined as a hard hitter. Or maybe it means both; someone who throws a lot of punches and hits hard.
Are brawlers and punchers the same?
MANGLER 06-11-2009, 10:45 AM Somebody who can KO you wit 1 good shot.

bingo.
has nothing to do with how many punches u throw. not about ability to knock ppl out based on accumulation of damage eighter. simply one punch KO artists.

Squabbles94806 06-11-2009, 12:26 PM A puncher is a one hitter quitter? Dope. So i'm assuming it's good to be a puncher.

puncher is sometimes used to mean boxer-punchers like hearns
P4PKING_2008 :) 06-11-2009, 05:23 PM Someone just looking for that one shot. Usually very slow and throw wide shots.

so do the terms "boxer" and "puncher" compliment each other? Yaddada? But we're all in agreement, puncher is someone who hits hard. Am i correct?
portuge puncher 06-11-2009, 06:04 PM Somebody who can KO you wit 1 good shot.
bingo!! agreed.
A puncher is someone who can score a KO with one punch. A good example would be Naseem Hamed. He generally scored knockouts using one shot and rarely threw in combinations of more than three punches.
A "puncher" differs from a regular hard hitter who usually has to break his/her opponent down using multiple combinations and then knocks him/her guy out. A good example would be Miguel Cotto. He usually works the body with multiple combinations for several rounds, then he can score a knockout after his opponent has lost their legs.
A "boxer-puncher" would be someone like Jhonny Gonzalez. He's a boxer and uses his reach and length to out-box his opponent. At the same time he has a good punch and can stop a guy at any time.
A brawler is someone who throws a lot of wide looping power shots and throws in high volume. Good example would be Ricky Hatton and Juan Diaz.
Kinetic Linking 06-12-2009, 07:13 AM someone who doesn't know how to fight
RightCross94 06-12-2009, 08:25 AM someone who carries a powerful punch, doesnt neccessarily mean they are brawlers, tommy hearns was a puncher who had nice boxing skills also
most guys who carry a big shot generally tend to come forward and brawl though, i love fighting those guys, guys who just come forward throwing heavy shots and arent afraid to get hit, so easy to outbox and counter

So according to you definitions, a hard hitter is someone who wears you down and then knocks you down, but a "puncher" can take you out in one shot at any time? Hmmm....not bad. So why come a hard hitter can't do that. He should be able to KO anyone at any time since he hits hard, no?
Seems to me that a boxer/puncher is the way to go. Brawling's good out on the street. I'd define Tyson as a boxer/brawler, cus he did have some looping power shots.
We were just talking about Diaz being a boxer/brawler.

A puncher you're saying...then shouldn't everyone be punchers? I mean, if you're a boxer ya gotta punch something right? Might as well be a puncher.
I dunno know what other peoples' styles are like, but i train to box with finesse and knock some mother fcuker out in a devestating fashion.
I like to hit things and people.
Chr0nic 06-12-2009, 10:49 AM a hard hitter
look at calzaghe flailing his arms like a mad man with the nerve to call those flabby cobra whiplash lookin arms 'punches'
you see people callin him a puncher? nope

So what are you saying? A hard hitter and a puncher are similar? I don't consider Calzaghe a hard hitter or a puncher, but then again i've never been in the ring with him. Just from the outside looking in, it doesn't look like he throws sledgehammers.
Aiite, so what about this?
Speed is power right?, so does that mean someone who's hella fast can also be a puncher? Analyze this...someone who has speed, knows who to box and considered a puncher. What is that?

It has to do with the explosiveness of the punch. Hamed had power and speed, he was very explosive. If you look at Cotto, his shots hurt, but they're not very fast. It's usually the punches you don't see coming that knock you out. There are guys who are fast like Malignaggi, but they don't have power. A excellent genetic combination of speed and power will make a one punch puncher. They're a rare breed.

You kidding man? Gatti was a huge puncher. That was what won him many hard, close fights. One punch and out.
Go and check out his early fights. He was a big puncher, all left hook.
Anyway, on topic, a puncher is quite simply someone who relies on his punch to win fights, not his boxing. He won't win fights with his boxing, he will win them with his punch, hence a puncher.
shynequasiog22 06-15-2009, 03:04 AM For a big puncher think Hearns, Julian Jackson type fighters who have one punch KO power. Margarito I wouldn't consider a big puncher because his KO's usually come from accumulation.
Kinetic Linking 06-15-2009, 09:31 PM if you mean a pure puncher, it's more about what you don't do. George Foreman was a pure puncher. He didn't do much clever boxing, and he didn't charge in and throw lots of vicious combinations like frazier or tyson. He just had monstrous power.
Pure puncher = big power, little clever boxing, little aggressive infighting.
puncher = anyone with power, term sometimes interchangeable with pure puncher, or used in combination like boxer puncher or fighter puncher or boxer fighter puncher
