View Full Version : One MMA
Manila Mafia 06-09-2009, 09:39 PM I just have an idea about MMA, we have so many organization like UFC, WEC, K-1 etc...Why not create one MMA, like Boxing set up they have wbc, wba, wbo etc. This MMA will fight for UFC belt, WEC belt etc.....
Whay do you think guys...:dunno::dunno::dunno:
jakkups 06-09-2009, 09:49 PM They've tried this with WAMMA. But it isn't working out well because unless the UFC are on board then they don't really have anything going for them. Even when Aoki fought Alvarez at DREAM/K1 Dynamite the WAMMA title was on the line but the organization (DREAM/K1) didn't even make a big deal if any deal out of it. Plus some of the WAMMA execs respsonsible for starting it have left, most notably Pat Miletich and Sam Caplan.

Nodogoshi 06-09-2009, 10:32 PM The UFC is more like a fight-promotial/fighter management/title-sanctioning body in one. Really, a closer boxing equivalent would by Don King Promotions, except that the UFC exercises greater control, commands a greater market share and opporates in a more extensive fashion in that they are involved in basically all aspects of management/fight promotion. Also, Don King does not issue world titles at this point.
I would liken Wamma more to The Ring title, as Wamma is essentially self-styled as an independent ranking body, and little more as far as I know. I wouldn't doubt it if they collect sanctioning fees as do the major boxing bodies, but again at this point I see it operating more as The Ring currently does.
None of the above-mentioned analogies are close to perfect by the way, as the business of boxing compared to that of MMA is a little bit of Apples vs Oranges.

Off topic, but dude, you wouldn't happen to be a law student? Cos you certainly sound like one lol.
Nodogoshi 06-09-2009, 10:38 PM I voiced more of my views on the UFC on this thread:

No, I doubled majored in Economics and International Studies in college. After graduating I sort of took an interest in business as well so I've read a lot of business/financial articles over the past couple of years. I also tend to observe businesses pretty closely to get a sense of their operations.

I posted that before I read your post man, that was just for general reference following my prior post.
The Gully Gad 06-09-2009, 10:49 PM I only ever watched pride and obviously UFC..

Cool man. I was never, what my american counterparts would call, college material. But I knew how to make money so I figured. . . **** it I'll get a head start lol.
dana white is a B-I-T-C-H. just a b*tch. with the emphasis dually noted!
that is what everyone i know who talked to him always says. same thing. he is either an assh0le, or a prick, or a b1tch. one of those 3. he screws with his fights, and even people outside of his stable. but i hear enough to say for sure that he is one reason there is separation and a big constriction of freedom of where and when u fight and with whom.
about other promoters, i dunno.
i know our chinese boxing isnt bad and actually promotes alliance. of course our coverage rarely gets on tv and is more likely to be in some magazines than on ppv. but, it is also non-profit, and also nobody is tied to a leash or screwed in some way(except if the judges are biased)
bad judging seems to be universal in everything judges is involved in.
anyways, i liked watching PRIDE a lot more. i liked their fighters more - they seemd to always have more actual skill than their UFC counterparts.
sanshou i will catch whenever i can too. same with some thai boxing or kickboxing.

It's almost paradoxical how prize fighting combines the cleanest of sport with the dirtiest of business.

exactly! that short sentence says a lot.
we fight for fun and to compare skills.
prizefighting, is a different animal. a business aka an animal in a tie and dress shoes.
honestly, since the KO brothers have taken over the hvywght div, it seems less dirty. fighters aren't being recycled over and over, and the best can fight the best. and the champs are not just sitting on titles either. no way anyone should be complaining about that now. i guess people tend to forget how it was when don king ruled the heavyweight after lewis retired and before the bros fully took over.

not a good idea. the UFC is the best thing going for MMA. its viewed as the best organization in MMA where the best fighters have to fight to prove that they are the best. having an independant belt would ruin that system.
having an "MMA" belt for all organizations is whats wrong with boxing. It is so easy to create an organization to represent a belt and collect royalties. Its much harder to create a whole organization with a roster of fighters to manage and the scheduling of events.
The UFC system is the reason its the fastest growing sport. It would be destructive to have it turn into a boxing type system.
