View Full Version : How long was it until you had your first amature fight?
holdthatthought 06-07-2009, 05:19 PM I started boxing about 6 weeks ago and my trainer and a couple of the seasoned amatures at my gym are saying I'm ready for my first fight later this month..
But I don't know if I'm ready or not... how long did you guys train until your first fight?

6 months, and that was considered very early by pretty much everyone i talked too. my advice would be to wait some more. in 6 weeks talented or not u most likely have several areas which are pretty much completely unexplored, unless u had great sparring. how long have u been sparring? how much? have u got the chance to spar diffrent styles? counterpunchers, tall jabbers, pressure fighters, southpaws etc etc..
im really tall, about 6'2 and when i made my debut it was at 141 (now im at 152). the point is i never fought somebody who was as tall as me without being way slower, and even the slower guys i had struggled with so when i fought tall guys my own size it gave me all types of problems. just felt uncomftorable not being able to have a "comfort zone" were i could hit them without them hitting back.

colly10 06-07-2009, 05:30 PM I've been training for over a year and my first amature fight that will go on my card is still a few months away, although I have done a 4 exhibitions and will get in a practice fight or 2 before I start.
6 weeks is not enough although it won't do ye any harm (assuming the fight doesn't turn ye off the sport)
BrooklynBomber 06-07-2009, 05:32 PM Almost 10 months.
Lost it too.
Richie-G 06-07-2009, 05:34 PM a year and a half.
got stopped in the fist round.
i would wait a while mate, get some quality sparring done first.
holdthatthought 06-07-2009, 05:38 PM lol, i finished my training session on Friday and my instructor came up to me and said i should think about entering in the amature fight night in about 3 weeks.. I was like wait... wut??? lol
He told me to tell him what I thought about it this week... I think Im gonna wait a month or two.. i just wanted to see how long most ppl take until their first fight
and @ assassin.. i started sparring about 3 weeks ago.. I've only sparred against my instructor and another dude that has a fight coming up in 2 weeks.
I think I held up pretty good. I'm 6'0 about 210 pounds and I used to play college rugby so I'm in decently good shape. Plus I'm a southpaw lol

then u should wait. i mean getting your ass whupped in front of a room full of ppl isnt a great experience, its better to take those ass whuppins in the gym. at some point u might get beat, most likely. but u want it to be cuz he was the better fighter. not cuz u rushed into something u wasnt ready for. especially a big guy like u, one mistake n it can be a short night for u. so u should take your time and make sure u are ready.

NYC2Cancun 06-07-2009, 06:59 PM damn well i had my first fight after 2 weeks. knocked the guy out. honestly wasnt well prepared, had never sparred before the fight because i'm a muscular guy so no one ever wants to spar me. it was too soon to fight, i just hit extremely hard and caught him to the body. my next fight is in two weeks making it 2 months, and the level i feel at at this point is way beyond that of my first fight. but once again going in with only 4 rounds of sparring
holdthatthought 06-07-2009, 07:11 PM fight because i'm a muscular guy so no one ever wants to spar me. it was too soon to fight, i just hit extremely hard and caught him to the body.
Yeah man, I kinda feel like im the same way.. like my instructor doesn't really let me spar with anyone else, and the dude he does let me spar with he tells me to go easy on lol, and the other dude has been boxing for 2 years and has a dozen amature fights under his belt.. He says i hit hard as hell and have great head movement.. I dont think I've ever been hit hard in the head while sparring
colly10 06-07-2009, 07:28 PM the dude he does let me spar with he tells me to go easy on lol, and the other dude has been boxing for 2 years and has a dozen amature fights under his belt.. Most people will tell ye to go easy because nobody likes to spar someone who's too heavy handed, sparring is about practicing your skills. Just cause a guy is asking you to take it easy doesn't mean he's no capable of dropping you

exactly, u box. hit and not get hit. as far as the hitting goes theres no reason to go of on your sparring partner, if u wanna throw bombs do it on the heavybag and in the fight. u cant go too easy on eachother ofcourse, but still. its really annoying trying to teach a new guy how to box when he thinks hes mike tyson and tries to knock u out in sparring. comes running in leaving himself wide open not doing anything the trainer told him too, i usually put em down with a bodyshot and eighter they start boxing and not brawling or they dont wanna spar me no more. eighter way we arent waisting both of our time anymore.
Boxer1590 06-07-2009, 10:47 PM Just under 4 months. Everyone considered this very early but I didn't care. I was sparring just like 3 weeks after I started training. I was doing well and after a few months my trainer finally asked me if I wanted to fight and I said of course. Won the fight.
This was back when I was 14 years old. Im 19 now and I've only fought once this year back in January!! My gym sucks and hasn't been getting us any fights. I have no fights scheduled either.

that sucks, im looking to fight for the first time in a long time myself after the summer. in addition i moved up in weight, just needed to be done. but anyways, going a long time without fighting sucks. i need to punch ppl with bad intention every once in a while, just built like that.
RightHooker 06-07-2009, 11:10 PM Just because you're ready for your first fight doesn't mean you're ready to WIN your first fight. Just depends on what you want.
My coach told me I was ready after about two months. But I had horrible defense and only knew how to throw power punches. Basically a brawler. So I waited and kept training hard. After about 4.5 months I thought I was ready to go. We had a couple fights fall apart last minute, so it was 5.5 months before I actually fought. And I slaughtered the guy in minute and he didn't hit me clean once.
So sure I could have gone in there after two months and fought. Maybe I'd win, maybe not. But I'm happy with the way things went.
CatchWeightMany 06-08-2009, 02:19 AM I started my amatuer career @ 16, trained for 1 week for my first fight, and won by TKO...
Thats what happens when you got skills like me sons

Make sure you dont sleep with your own family members before the fight, it weakens the legs :fing26: :wt:

LegacyWeapon 06-08-2009, 02:59 AM Maybe those 4 guys TKO'd you too hard and now you cant really comprehend much at all and you were probably fighting some kids on fight night round 3 and got 9 straight KO's. I'm sorry if im hurting your feelings I'll leave your miserable failing record alone

yeah your hillbilly cousin is callin you to make out with her, cya later CLETUS
RightCross94 06-08-2009, 04:06 AM i would wait a little, you may be talented but you should get more sparring etc done before fighting, 3 weeks of sparring isnt quite enough IMO, you need about 8-10 weeks good, varied sparring before you fight IMO, and that if your picking stuff up quickly
and as an full grown adult in the 200+ pound class there are guys who can really bang at your age/weight, so a mismatch can become even more dangerous

lol im sure no one wants to spar you because of your 'muscles'.. what gym are u at.. cuz ur screen name says NYC to Cancun so if your from a legit gym in my city aint no one scared of your muscles bro... just sayin

Yea man my gym is terrible. Ray Oliveira was the trainer, you probably heard of him he was a very good fighter, fought Vernon Forrest, Vince Phillips, Ben Tackie, Ricky Hatton, Emanuel Augustus, etc. He had the gym running nice. But he had to leave for a while. Since he left the gym is a disaster. There is only 3 of us there now who take the sport serious and other than that it's just a bunch a hoodlums that hang out there and mess around. The 3 of us are the only sparring partners we got and we all know each other so well in the ring sparring isn't even interesting any more. Ray came back, but was so disgusted with the gym he said he dont think he even wants to run it again....
sh!t sucks to say the least.
There is another city about 20 minutes from where I live I think I might go to to train.
Southpaw16BF 06-08-2009, 03:01 PM Manuel Ortiz one of the best Bantamweights of all time. Had never laced up the gloves and was a lorry driver, when he was invited to a amature boxing show to watch. One of the fighters pulled out, and Ortiz with no boxing background stepped in.
After this he would join a boxing gym and With-in a year, Ortiz won the Southern California Amateur Flyweight Title, the Golden Glove Title, and the National AAU title in Boston.
In the pro ranks Ortiz was a two time Bantamweight champion, and is considred one of the best Bantamweights of all time. On his first reign as being champion he made 15 defences of his Title before losing it to Harold Dade. He would reign his belt in his very next fight beating Harold Dade.

good idea. i have a gym within 10-15min walking distance of where i live, but unfortunately is sucks. or it used to suck it seems like its gotten a bit better, back when i checked it out the sparring partners werent all that good and the trainer didnt give me a good vibe. now they seem to have some decent cats over there. but where i train, 2 busses away there is great sparring, and i get along real well with my trainer so im likely to stay. hes given me crazy amount of attention from day 1, the chances of finding another trainer who invests in my like that at this point are slim. but real talk.. sparring is important so i would leave if i was u.

I used to love watching ray Olivera fight, he was a punching machine.
portuge puncher 06-08-2009, 05:38 PM 8 months, and i lost lol
Spacey1991 06-08-2009, 05:42 PM It could take 1-2 years to get properly ready to start fighting... at my gym they will not put you in unless they're certain your ready, they said some people put them in quicker but if they make sure that little bit more you will do better.
I aint had my first one yet, I guess your ready when your ready... some people learn at different paces, are already fit before starting, etc. It all depends I guess.
Boxer1590 06-08-2009, 07:32 PM I used to love watching ray Olivera fight, he was a punching machine.
lol yea Ray's a nut. Train with the guy for 1 minute and you'll see why he was a punching machine lol. He ha has lot of interesting stories too lol like why he hates Zab Judah's guts. Sadly he doesn't want to train fighters anymore it seems, I'm hoping he comes around he just recovered from a major set back in his life.
Hagler★ 06-08-2009, 10:21 PM Took me 6 months started in October fought this past March won a majority decision. I was luck because I had the #1 ranked amateur for my weight class in the country in my gym and I sparred with people bigger than me so I went into the ring with the thoughts that only God would stop me beating this man, I busted his lip nose and knocked out his gumshield knocked him down in the 1st and yet it was still a MD.

Yea man I've been saying I'm gonna leave for the longest time but I never do it lol. It's just the gym is so close to where I live, I can walk there if I want, and I'm very good friends with some of the people there I feel like I'm turning my back on them if I leave. Also it's free if you live in the area. I guess I've just been hoping things shape up, waiting for Ray to come back. But when he came back on Wednesday he was so disgusted with the gym he doesn't even wanna run it.
but yea your 100% right, I should leave. I just need to man up and do it.
