View Full Version : James Toney- Do you Buy the Hype?
Colonel Jones 11-16-2004, 07:15 PM Question: Do you think James Toney is a top rated Heavyweight contender because he is just that, a legitimate contender, or it is simply a sad reflection of how week the competition is in the Heavyweight Division? Do you really think that a blown up middleweight has any real chance against a true prime heavyweight?
trinidadpr87 11-16-2004, 07:18 PM The Competition Aint That Bad It's Just Not As Good As Before Remember The 90's Were A Hell Of A Heavyweight Year.but Toney Is A Top 20 Fighter.
whdempsey 11-16-2004, 07:20 PM I think Toney deserves to be rated in the top-ten because of the absolute dominance he has shown in his two outings at this weight class. The important thing in my mind is that he seems more skillful and talented than most of the other highly rated heavyweights. It's not so much because of the quality of his opposition that he gets a rating.
And yes, blown up middleweights do stand a chance against true heavyweights.

How about neither. He has two wins at heavyweight. Holyfield and Booker. That's not saying much. Booker is trash and we all saw what Donald did to Holyfield even though everyone stupidly picked Holyfield. He is unproven at best. It all depends on how he looks in his next fight and who its against.

abso ****ing lutely. Who is he gonna fight next?
Sir_Jose 11-16-2004, 11:28 PM Of course he is a player in the division. at this poinbt everyone is pretty much a player
Neuraxis 11-16-2004, 11:35 PM abso ****ing lutely. Who is he gonna fight next?
Who knows. Maybe a rematch with Booker. All I know is that he is suppossed to fight again in February, and I would very surprised if its against anyone that is any good.
m00ks 11-16-2004, 11:39 PM Pretty fast hands for a Heavyweight.
oldgringo 11-16-2004, 11:39 PM Neuraxis...what the **** should he do in his first two fights at Heavy? Go straight from cruiser to fighting V Klit and Byrd? He has to settle into HW div somehow. I think we will see a giant leap in comp for his next bout...
The Fix 11-16-2004, 11:41 PM toney is a legit contender but if this were 5-10 years ago, no he wouldnt be considered a llegit contender

I had no trouble with him fighting Holyfield because no one really knew how shot he was until last Saturday, but Booker, come on now. You should know better than that. There may be a giant leap in the level of fighter who fights in his next bout, but Owen Beck is not a giant leap.
SonnyG8R 11-16-2004, 11:51 PM Neuraxis, you've got a pm.
Toney is nothing. Or maybe not when you consider he has the WBC "Continental Americas Heavyweight" and IBA "Heavyweight Champ" titles. But, after all he did whoop the aging Evander. And that Heavy prospect Jorov, oops, cruiser. Recently though, he got my attention with his domination of ...... Danny Green, now that's impressive.
Toney had his day from 1991 to 94, notably against Barkley, but those are the 'ole days. And Toney has had his chances. Today, he doesn't draw a crowd, so he's not going to get the big shot.
GasPed 11-17-2004, 01:05 AM I dunno, I think a lot of "fans" see a big name in Toney and would pay to see him fight for a HW championship.
But personally, I don't really fancy his chances with any of the current champs (well, maybe Brewster, if you consider him a champ).
AKATheMack 11-17-2004, 01:30 AM I just want to know why everyone said Roy Jones stood no chance against someone the size of the Klitschkos but for some reason Toney does?
TheGreat1 11-17-2004, 02:55 AM I just want to know why everyone said Roy Jones stood no chance against someone the size of the Klitschkos but for some reason Toney does?
because RJJ doesn't have the chin of Toney. toney has passed RJJ from 10 years ago when they fought

I just had to put my 2 cents in on this one since RJJ went straight from Lt Hvy to fighting a champ, Toney could and should have done the same thing. Now all the sudden he is trying to say no one will fight him. I aint got nothing against Toney but his tendancy to lay on the ropes will probably get him in trouble with the big boys who can lean on him and hit a hell of a lot harder. I definiely think he dont need to be fighting a Booker type guy any more. He needs to get a top 10 guy if not a champ, into the ring.
Neuraxis 11-17-2004, 03:13 AM because RJJ doesn't have the chin of Toney. toney has passed RJJ from 10 years ago when they fought
Yet the glass chinned RJJ went in against the worst champ at the time and won his belt. Toney should have had no trouble doing the same thing by beating Brewster or the same paper champ who RJJ beat.
TheFairPole 11-17-2004, 07:45 AM I think any top 10 guy will handle the great over-hype Toney!!! Maybe I'm wrong but I just don't see it. He was a great fighter, but not at heavy!!!

He's unproven!
I'd like to see him fight Klit, I think he's talking a bit too much for a guy who has only fought a very low level of opposition at Heavy
We want a real Champ to emerge and give us several years of KOing guys Tyson did and then Lewis. Toney won't bring that type of prsence to the Heavy scene.
If Toney does get his shot at Ruiz or Brewster, he'd probably beat 'em good. Trouble is, nobody respects those guys, so what sort of status does that give Toney, other than contract leverage (very little though).
I expect to see a Toney freak-show bout against somebody who lost last Saturday. Say Golota or McCline. A lot of people would tune-in, but Toney's status would not change a whole bunch, unless he dramatically KO's the guy. Unlikely, but ya never know.
Neuraxis...what the **** should he do in his first two fights at Heavy? Go straight from cruiser to fighting V Klit and Byrd? He has to settle into HW div somehow. I think we will see a giant leap in comp for his next bout...
....That sounds logical except Toney spouts off about how he can whip any of them right now. If you say you can do it and expect us to believe it then set up a fight with a top guy already. I'm beggining to think it won't happen. Unless it is V Klit and Toney stands to make a fortune. Then he will probably take that fight, take his beating, and ride off into the sunset with his BK problems solved.
Eyeh8you 11-17-2004, 04:51 PM Fight Barret, Rahmna, Golota, Whitaker, McCline, JC Gomez. And win any of these fights and I'll respect him. Well I aready respect him but these Toney scrotum sailors are as bad as when the Wlad nut riderz were spewing that **** like he's the second coming of christ. Same for Jirov, I mean yeah he retired Mesi but he lost. He gonna have to beat Moorer pretty good to make a statement. Im thinking Toney and McCline get it on in Feb. From what I seen Toney may be able to get by him if he survives the initial barage of punches
SonnyG8R 11-17-2004, 06:07 PM James Toney- Do you Buy the Hype?
Simple answer - NO

Toney was fighter of the year last year.
He hasent been this hot since 1991
Neuraxis 11-17-2004, 06:41 PM Toney was fighter of the year last year.

Why was he fighter of the year though? He beat a winless heavyweight Jirov and a shot Holyfield. Once you step back and look at it, it doesn't seem like fighter of the year material after all.

Your putting it in the wrong situation. It should read, "He beat the cruiserweight king and beat Evander Holyfield in his first fight at HW."
At least that's what it was at the time...Jirov hadn't had any fights at heavy yet. Evander was still a gatekeeper type HW at the time...even though he was definitely shot.

Fighter of The Year .... I was all wrong I'll take it back.
And now that you said he "hot", well I'll just remain silent on the Toney debate.
I'm a convert ..... Toney is the next Unified HW Champ.

At the time it was though. Just because Jirov hasn't had success so far in his young HW career doesn't discredit Toney for beating one of the toughest Cruisers of the last 30 some odd years. Those were two big accomplishments IMO. He deserved that FOTY award.

I agree. And yes I buy the hype....Since it is about the only hype at the HW atm. I also bought the hype of Tyson being able to return.

After watching that garbage this weekend, I feel like fighting now beating these heavyweights with one arm tied behind my back
James Toney Back In Training Next Month For Feb. Return!
LOS ANGELES, November 16th – The heavyweight division thought they were getting a longer reprieve from the onrushing train known as James Toney, but with the cast now off his torn left bicep and after receiving the green light from his doctor last Thursday to resume boxing training next month, beware, because “Lights Out” is hungrier than ever to add a ton full of heavyweights to his resume. "First and second stage accomplished,” said Toney (68-4-2, 43 KOs), who was injured during his dominating 12 round decision win over previously unbeaten Rydell Booker on September 23. " After watching that garbage this weekend, I feel like fighting now and beating these heavyweights with one arm tied behind my back. Believe me, I ain't kidding."
Noted surgeon Dr. Tony Daly removed the cast from Toney’s arm over 2-weeks ago, and was delighted with the three-division champion’s prognosis. “The bicep looks fine and now we will strengthen the muscles,” said Dr. Daly at the time. Said Dan Goossen of Goossen Tutor Promotions after speaking to Dr. Daly last Thursday, “I was told that the arm is healing great, and by December he will be able to get back to his boxing training. The calls and emails we received this weekend from fans was overwelhmingly pleading for James' return to the ring. He adds a dimension no other heavyweight has since the dominating performances of Mike Tyson, EXCITEMENT AND EXPLOSIVENESS. As I said before, he is the future in the heavyweight division now."
