View Full Version : Why Nas Is The GREATEST RAPPER OF ALL TIME...
Mr. Mef 05-28-2009, 09:21 PM I use to say Tupac Amaru Shakur was. Why? Because I would say that 2-Pac did ever style great, lyrics, combined with his great flow touched alot of people.
But I have now changed my mind. Nas also did every style good to great, Nas had some good clubs songs.
I can't say that 2-Pac is the greatest just because of his great flow and extreme popularity. Lets be honest, flow is a great thing, but its not everything. And as far as his popularity, alot of that was because of his music, but him dying made him larger than life. If 2-Pac wasn't killed, he wouldn't be as big of a legend as he is. Would he be a big legend? Absolutley, but dying made him an icon.
Nas is a better lyricist, Nas has also touched people. EX: I know I can, The World is yours and black girl lost. Nas also has a great flow, not as great as 2-Pacs. But a great one. Nas is arguably a better story teller, Nas is more creative. Nas arguably made the greatest rap album of all time, 2-Pac doesn't have one top 5 album of all time. People say 2-Pac had a big impact, he did, because he died and was great. Don't get me wrong, he would have been a great great legend, without dying. His music is incredible, and I'd rate him #2 all time. Thats a huge compliment.
Nas is still going strong, Untitled was a near classic to classic. 2-Pac's after death albums have been good to very good at best. Thats not his fault, but its worth pointing out that Nas is still going as an argument for why he is better. That is not to be meant as disrespect toward to 2-pac, but its just being honest.
Who has a discography as good as Nas? Nobody.
Illmatic-Classic
It was written- Classic
Stillmatic-Classic
Untitled-Classic
Gods Son- near classic
Street disciple- 4/5
Nas is untouchable. Rakim is a pioneer and one of the best ever(top 3). But how could Rakim be the greatest? his discography doesn't match nas's discography.

THE GREATEST RAPPER OF ALL TIME
Mr. Mef 05-28-2009, 09:25 PM I love 2-Pac, no homo. I just don't want people to take what I'm saying the wrong way.
My greastest list is
Nas
2-Pac
Rakim
KRS-One
Jay-Z
VERSATILE2K10 05-28-2009, 09:27 PM Nas is 6/10. Dude just doesn't do it. He desperately needs a style change up. No more 80's or 90's anymore.
The Fix 05-28-2009, 09:28 PM i think i might have to agree with you...
nasir is the greatest rapper to ever lift a mic.
nasir
rakim

Mr. Mef 05-28-2009, 09:33 PM Fix, you do realize that the hardcore 2-Pac enthusiastists are going to kill me?
Lights Out JT 05-28-2009, 09:35 PM Nas 50, 2pac 37

Looks like you can make the argument either way at this point, but im ready to say that I think they are the two best rappers ever. And im leaning very slighty towards Nas being the goat
Mr. Mef 05-28-2009, 09:37 PM I'm listening to untitled right now....
for all those who havnt killed me, thank you...lol

I've been listening to untitled the past couple of days...its a great cd, the only thing that bothers me at times is his beat selection. The song breathe is real dope, good summertime song.
Truth, you can add a nas vs pac poll fam?
Mr. Mef 05-28-2009, 09:41 PM has pac ever made a song as creative as rewind or i gave you power?

yeah i think some beats on untitled arnt perfect, but overall its near classic-classic nas.
I dont think I can, now that the thread is already made.
u can make a nas or pac poll thread if you want....

Lol, I think wayne put out more mixtapes in the last 2 years than everything you just posted.
The_Executioner 05-28-2009, 10:29 PM Resume wise I think Nas is the GOAT but you could argue Jay is. People consider the Black Album, Reasonable Doubt as classics. One of my friends thinks American Gangster was borderline classic along wit another Jay album from the late 90's(think Hard Knock Life).
Nas is deff my fav. Pac's lyrics aren't as creative and witty as Nas. Pac could make any kind of record tho. Hard shit and it'd sell. Poppish shit and it wud sell.
2Pac is and will always have a greater impact(mainly cuz stupid ni99as don't like rappers spittin knowledge like Nasir does) than Nas, but P4P Nas is better.
Nas has better albums than Rakim too. And Biggie had one classic. And one very good album. 2 albums doesn't make you GOAT.
Two Clips 05-28-2009, 10:30 PM Nas has done alot too....^
Yes, 2-pac is great. thats why I said he was, and rated him #2 all time. Which is a great compliment.Oh I know man but as far as straight up hits I think Pac got him beat. I mean shit he was doing in 93 jamz still to this day 16 yrs later, he was way ahead of his time and I could only imagine if he was still alive how his flow would have evolved.
Lights Out JT 05-28-2009, 10:31 PM two clips...i can do the same thing, i can post Nas' discography...i have no problem with you or anyone sayin pac is the goat, thats a very respectable choice but i think nas is slightly better

Flow - IMO pac.
Creativity - Nas, Tupac was not creative IMO he just told the truth.

5. Rakim probably but I haven't heard enuff of him. His albums never wud sell from wat I remember
Mr. Mef 05-28-2009, 10:32 PM Oh I know man but as far as straight up hits I think Pac got him beat. I mean shit he was doing in 93 jamz still to this day 16 yrs later, he was way ahead of his time and I could only imagine if he was still alive how his flow would have evolved.
Oh I respect your opinion without question. And I have the highest respect for 2-pac and his music.

You must forgot that Biggie only had 2 Albums because he died, if Pac and Smalls were still Alive No one would be saying Nas is better.
Two Clips 05-28-2009, 10:33 PM Lol, I think wayne put out more mixtapes in the last 2 years than everything you just posted.I bet he has but we are talking about Pac, Wayne doesn't even belong in the same sentence as Pac.:afro:

lyrics, flow, discographys, creativity etc.
You mean Skillful. Who gives a **** who sold more records. It's called Rap, not Rap Sales. Skillwise, Nas is ahead of everyone, aside from Rakim. They are both on a level of their own.

GodzHand 05-29-2009, 12:04 AM That's probably most of their list's.
what's yours?
Kobe Bryant 05-29-2009, 12:20 AM It used to be Pac for me but it's Nas now. Nas has been able to put out more music and more great music. I'm from the west coast and have no biased. But to me Nas is the best period.
Top 3
Nas
2Pac
Ice Cube
KILLA RIGHT 05-29-2009, 03:44 AM Today i say pac morow nas or rakim or ghost or maybe gza
I use to say Tupac Amaru Shakur was.

THE GREATEST RAPPER OF ALL TIME
Definately have to support your decision to lift Nas over Pac.
Pac had alot of emotion but he was just too ordinary when it comes to lyrics.
As for the Nas Rakim discography comparison, Rakim has 4 indisputable classics. By indisputable I mean an album that is universally recognized as classic. Nas has only one indisputable classic (It Was Written) and three albums that I personally consider classics (Illmatic, It Was Written, Stillmatic) so Ra has one over him in my book.

Surely Illmatic is more universally recognised than It Was Written (and if wrong, don't execute me, just an opinion). Illmatic, It Was Written and Stillmatic are all classic albums that Nas has done but not only are they considered classics (by me anyways), God's Son was another album I'd personally consider a classic because every song on that album was class. Although it may not be as universally recognised as Illmatic (or It Was Written), it was still quality.

I think Illmatic is Nas's only undisputed classic, when it comes to critics and fans alike.
Nas has a quality discography for sure, though...but I think a lot of folks, especially on this board, throw the word 'classic' around too freely...
-Blackout- 05-29-2009, 08:31 AM The way I see it:
2 Pac - best discography, legacy & influential
Nas - current, the best rapper alive
Rakim - pioneer, and influential
Em - best allround rapper, influential in being the greatest white rapper to ever lift the mic, king of the disstracks
Ice Cube or LL - no need to introduce these veterans.

Thats the most unbelievable thing I've heard in my 6 years of being here. Or atleast top 5....
Mr. Mef 05-29-2009, 09:59 AM ^I see what happened. I was just looking at Rakim's SOLO career. You added in his cds with Eric B.
But still, saying Illmatic isn't an undisputable classic is puzzling to me....
Lights Out JT 05-29-2009, 10:18 AM Wow...this thread blew the fukk up
Eminem might be the only rapper thats as skilled as nas and rakim, but the fact that you can argue eminem doesnt have a classic is what holds him back. His discography in no way can fukk with rakim or nas'
The question for me now is whos the 2nd best rapper: Rakim or 2pac. Comparing Rakim to 2pac is kind of like comparing nas to 2pac. Rakim is the more skilled rapper, but pac has the better flow and hes more passionate.

I would still call Rakim's music with Eric B. part of his solo career, Eric B. was just the dj...he didnt rap. But i agree, Nas clearly has more then one classic.

It took me a while to get into rakim (no homo) but i can honestly say i love his first 5 albums. The argument can be made that they're all classics.

I co-sign this mixtape as the best "best of rakim" that exists

For a while i thought he was, but i think nas has passed everyone. Now its a battle for 2nd place between rakim and pac. But the way i see it, you cant go wrong by chosing any one of the three of them.

**listens to rakim in the background, very unconfident**
lol
QUELOQUE 05-29-2009, 04:21 PM Nas is the best rapper of all time. Why do you think 2Pac and Biggie dissed (BIG did it subliminally) a rapper that didn't provoke them, only had 1 album out, and that album didn't go more than gold? Seriously. They knew talent and lyrically and creatively Nas has been a consistent dude for 18 years, that shit is almost incredible.
Illmatic is his best album, but It Was Written got that piff.
Texasboy34 05-29-2009, 04:41 PM If Nas could have kept that same flow that he had on Illmatic this would not even be a contest. For some reason he switched it up to a slower flow starting on It Was Written, and although he is still better than 99% of the rappers out there I think it down graded him a bit IMO.
Here is how I break this down:
Lyrics - Nas
Flow - 2Pac
Storytelling - Tie
Passion / ability to relay the "message" - 2Pac
Voice - 2Pac
Punchlines / Multis - Nas
Better Catalogue - Tie... Both have classics, Nas gets extra pts for Illmatic, but gets dinged for Nastradamus & Untitled. Pac was more consistant, but none of his work matches Illmatic so we will just say tie on this one.
Most influential to their generation and new gens of rappers - 2Pac
With that said 2Pac >>> Nasir
WANGLER 05-29-2009, 05:18 PM i think i might have to agree with you...
nasir is the greatest rapper to ever lift a mic.
nasir
rakim
kane
chuck d
krs
giancanna
gza
face
Very respectable list. :notworthy
Definately have to support your decision to lift Nas over Pac.
Pac had alot of emotion but he was just too ordinary when it comes to lyrics.

It's actually Illmatic that's the undeniable classic.
black.ink 05-29-2009, 05:39 PM 3 years ago i would have said Rakim.
For the past year i have said Nas. In my opinion, Illmatic is the greatest hip hop album of all time. It was Written is an undeniable classic, Stillmatic and God's Son IMO are arguable classics, with Untitled, I Am and Hip Hop is Dead being great albums. He has never released a poor album (yes i include Nastradamus).
When you take into account all the all the neccessary qualities needed to qualify for the GOAT label, (influence, creativity, flow, impact, lyrically etc...) only few can be judged. Although the judging is all based on opinion.
The main contenders IMO, would be narrowed to Nas, Pac, Rakim, BDK, Biggie, Kool G Rap, krs, LL, Jay Z and possibly Eminem. I wouldn't know what order to put them in, but i can't put anybody above Nas.

Storytelling - Tie? It's pretty close, but you're wrong. 2 Pac has a couple like real good tracks like 'Dear Mama', 'Brenda's Got A Baby', and 'Keep Your Head Up'. But tracks like 'Rewind' had never been done before, the personification of a gun in 'I Gave You Power', 'Fetus', 'Money Is My Bitch', 'Undying Love'... Need I say more?
Smokin'J 05-29-2009, 06:26 PM Only listen to shoot em up from Nas
MegStarr* 05-31-2009, 03:17 AM I agree. But having the better flow doesn't make u the better rapper. ya know?
i think that you are not putting enough weight on the importance of flow. it is what ties it all together. your flow is your glue. exceptional flow can make wack lyrics sound hype. in my opinion it is extremely important...probably most important, actually. there are a whole lot of "good" rappers. there aren't a whole lot of "greats", and the greats have mad crazy flow!
Mr. Mef 05-31-2009, 10:34 AM i think that you are not putting enough weight on the importance of flow. it is what ties it all together. your flow is your glue. exceptional flow can make wack lyrics sound hype. in my opinion it is extremely important...probably most important, actually. there are a whole lot of "good" rappers. there aren't a whole lot of "greats", and the greats have mad crazy flow!
I agree that flow matters, and matters alot. I love rappers with great flow.
However, I'm not going to put a rapper over another rapper soley because he/or she has a better flow.
But maybe I'm wrong....you have me thinking more about this. I appreciate your response.
Just one thing. 2Pac came before, can't ignore that. Most of the time he had a war with the east also. Now think of 2Pac now, he would not have been rapping about west vs east, that sh!t is over. So could have been more into storytelling, maybe some more club banging. What i'm trying to say is that the times were different hence different songs. 2pac on his time was relevant, he not only was mainstream but the hardcore fanbase followed him. Nas in the other hand hits mainstream some times but years from now i don't see how he will be as big as 2pac is. Yeah the fact that he was killed had a lot to do with it but he is still around
^I see what happened. I was just looking at Rakim's SOLO career. You added in his cds with Eric B.

lol Yes of course I meant Illmatic, I didn't even know I had typed that; was doing too many things at once i guess.
Mr. Mef 06-06-2009, 10:26 PM Pac is still the greatest. his music is just more powerful.....
I take back what i said
i believe nas is superior to 2pac
The_Executioner 06-07-2009, 12:30 AM Pac is still the greatest. his music is just more powerful.....
I take back what i said
Pound for Pound Nas is better...but Pac's impact weighs more...and probably always will...
