View Full Version : You can be anything you wanna be....
Why do adults bombard children with this line of absolute bull****?
It's great to get kids to dream of being something great, and I use it with my kids. But it's absolute bull****.
You can't be anything you want. If you're ugly you can't be a model, if you're blind you can't drive. If you don't have the skills, size, etc. you can't be an athlete.
Am I the only one that thinks this can lead to quite a bit of let down and depression for children?

Fallout 09-02-2004, 10:42 PM I am going to teach my kids to try and be anything they want to be, but to always have something to fall back on.
Purity 09-02-2004, 10:44 PM you can be anything you wanna be but if you spend your whole time focusing on all of life's setbacks then you will join the rest of the sheep in being the ultimate self-viewed martyr. nobody will feel sorry for you except for yourself and weak people. so in the end, you=****.
i don't have time to think about **** that could hold me back.
the only children who become depressed on life's realities are the children who's parents were too weak to expose reality and too depressed in themselves to teach wisdom.

I actually agree with Purity (to a point anyway). Obviously you arent going to be an NBA player if you are 5'1 and fat. However, that doesn't mean you can't be sucessful and make a name for yourself. Teaching kids to set thier goals high is a good thing, not telling them something just isn't realistic is another.
Also, as any successful person will tell you, luck helps. Sometimes it comes down to just being in the right place at the right time.
Purity 09-02-2004, 10:53 PM luck has very, very little to do with it.

What exactly do you base this opinion on? Because it's incredibly unrealistic. We should push ourselves to do exceptional things, and be the best we can personally be. But, we cannot be anything we want to be. FACT

Horse **** Tony and you know it. Yes, people with the skills to back it up will always do well, but the difference between doing well and doing amazing sometimes just comes down to luck

Now this part I agree with Tony on. Take Michael Jordan for example. I'm sure there have been a number of players equally as skilled as him, but his work ethic and determination set him apart from the rest.
Their is luck involved though when it comes to injuries, accidents etc.
Fallout 09-02-2004, 11:30 PM Sports is espically true about luck. Havent you ever heard the saying you need to be good to be lucky and lucky to be good.
I thought the saying was we make our own luck!?!?

i base my opinion on every success case that i've been exposed to. what i say appears unrealistic because 80% of people never try to attain what they really want outta life. outta the remaining 20%, the vast majority find it easier to give up and spend their energy on justifying why they prefer settling for less.
so as you can see.....the odds aren't exactly presentable.
you can be anything you want to be. that is a fact. if you wanna take up the rest of this thread providing examples of where, how, why, and when people failed, can fail, or will fail then congradulations. we'll address them.

i didn't say luck had NOTHING to do with it. i said it had very little to do with it.

i'd be willing to bet that 9 outta 10 people involved in any type of sport will disagree with you on that. and seeing that you aren't accomplishing anything in sports right now, i'm gonna have to side with the actual athletes on this opinion.
what a stupid expression.

Actually, thats where the saying came from. Athletes. Espically goalies.

nance 09-03-2004, 04:58 AM When they're small, I say tell the kids that they can be whatever they want to be. As they grow older, common sense will kick in...they'll figure it all out. What they will know most of all, is how you supported them in their dreams and fantasies. Young children won't hold it against you if tell that they can be what they want to be. It teaches them to dream, to think big. It won't hurt them. They aren't going to come back one day and be mad at you for telling them "tall tales" when they were 7-8 years old.
As they get older, you need to guide them. Sometimes that means pointing out the obvious to them. They can figure out a lot on their own without our help, but they always need our ears to listen and our wallets to spend......

You got it. As soon as I find the time....lol.
With Danny in ROTC, all of my weekends will be booked from now on. I'm chaperoning a camping trip later this month. Apparently not many moms are into helping out, even though their daughters are in it. So I said yes.

My Mom used to come to my hockey games and leave not being able to talk. She even got thrown out of my baseball games. My Mom > Your Mom.

I, only once, yelled at the ump for being stupid. He called my son out at third before the ball even got there. He was safe.

Have you ever been touched by real tragedy?
It's easy to cast dispersions but some people can't move forward as easily as others. Especially when they have gone through something rather traumatic. All I'm saying is you cannot measure another person's pain by your own.
Purity 09-04-2004, 12:11 PM it's not where you stand, it's in which direction you move. yes i've been touched by tragedy (it wasn't fake) and it's a part of life. it sets back temporarily but doesn't block permanently
handjobs4dollars 09-04-2004, 03:25 PM the only tragedy I've been touched by is my sex life.
