View Full Version : Friendly sparring. Is this fair?
andalusian81 05-20-2009, 07:54 AM Hello guys my trainer told me that I will spar with another one of his students
And I know that that student uses a 10 ounce glove while I use a 14.
Will this be a fair spar? who would have the advantage or disadvantage? thanks.
Edit: Guys we are still just begginers we dont fight at the amateur or pro.
7 1 6 05-20-2009, 08:13 AM Well how old is he? and how old are you? is he more experienced then you? how long have you been boxing? is he a smaller guy? or are you just a bigger guy? also yeah its fair. I use 16oz while my partners use 10-14. its only doing you better.
Zhaakal 05-20-2009, 08:58 AM Lol.. itīs not about the size of the gloves. Skills and experience are the factor. You shouldn't realy pay any attention to how big the other guys gloves are. As far as they ain't 8 ounces it's all good.
BrooklynBomber 05-20-2009, 10:01 AM Depends on his size and experience. If you are much bigger then him and he was in boxing only for a little while, it probably means he still has problems keeping his hands up.
J.Dempsey 05-20-2009, 10:21 AM i sparred against a guy with the heavy bag mittons on, n i had 14 or 16 oz gloves on., n neither of us had head gear..it is sparring after all just get in there get stuck in, try **** out n if u get hit, get used to it :boxing:
BmoreBrawler 05-20-2009, 10:43 AM no, its not fair. He will be a lot faster because of the 4oz difference and also his punches will hit harder.
THE REED 05-20-2009, 10:43 AM no, its not fair. He will be a lot faster because of the 4oz difference and also his punches will hit harder.
agreed..........
andalusian81 05-20-2009, 10:51 AM Ok thanks for the feedback guys. My coach told me that that student of his started 5 months earlier than me however he said that I can beat him cause I work hard. So I dont really know. We are both on the thin side and he is bigger in height than me.
Also we are both 16 years old
P4PKING_2008 :) 05-20-2009, 11:03 AM It shouldn't make a difference. If you have the skills there already glove size won't be an excuse.
Home town hero 05-20-2009, 11:19 AM look at like this. If your fighting sum1 exactly the same skill level weight height etc id rather have the 10s on than the 14s.

"Friendly" sparring is a big waste of time. The real learning come from observing others, drills and shadow boxing. Sparring is for putting what you have learned into practise and occasionally getting punished for mistakes. Acting like a ***** will never prepare you for the harsh reality of a dangerous opponent who is trying to hurt you. That kind of danger has to be simulated in sparring.
Those gloves are TOO SMALL!

MonkeyEarMuffs 05-20-2009, 03:14 PM Your coach needs to get a serious wake-up call. You spar in 14-16oz gloves and base it on weight/exp. Always use head gear/mouth piece/groin guard and don't "fight", BOX, practice, test things out on a LIVE OPPONENT. You need to focus on practicing what you have learned and the techniques you are trying to perfect.
You are not sparring to get hit or learn to get beat up. You are sparring to get better and you get better by being able to spar more often and you spar more often by TAKING CARE OF EACH OTHER. A hurt fighter is worthless to a gym/trainer. Get 16's on that chump and you and get to work.
Train in 14's spar with 16's and you will be healthy and productive.

exactly.
your coach seems dumb, how good are you gonna get when you get hit with 10oz gloves and get a concussion and cant spar for a month... I hope you enjoy the 5 day headache and hopefully you dont have a job to lose.
Honestly sparring isnt about toughening up and learning to not be a *****, you kids are all just that. Kids and you dont understand ****. You should pay attention to other peoples gloves, its your head. Its not gonna do you better when you get ****ed up and cant even train.
Zhaakal 05-20-2009, 04:39 PM exactly.

Hmm.. Pretty much everyone i know in my club uses 10 ounces. Try to avoid punches. If you block them with your head then you get an headache.

Then wear 10oz gloves as well. Who would care? There's no rules against wearing small gloves in training. Wear what you want. To make it even just strap on some 10s and you'll be set. Most of the time, both fighters agree on what to wear. So if you dont like that he has 10s and you have 14s. Then go to 10s and make him pay.

lol, andalusian is only a beginer dood!!! lol Even in amateurs we wear 12os. Hey anda don't listen to this nuts they only wanna get u hurt lol don't sparr with those smaller gloves and use 14+ if u sparr unless u wanna break your nose. Reserve all that warrior tough **** we u in a real fight already :poke:
anway trainer vs. student can be controlled but sometimes student vs, student can get real messy and bloody and u dont want a 10oz on that hitting your face.

****, I didn't know he was a beginner. :dunno:
andalusian81 05-20-2009, 09:42 PM WOw thanks vein! you saved my life once again with your great tips.
but wait. Will I get injured even If I have a headgear and mouthpiece?
I3C727 05-20-2009, 10:45 PM with 10 oz gloves, probably. you have a way higher chance to get injured getting hit by 10 oz gloves then with 16s, their is a big difference. Just do yourself a favor and only spar people who are using 16s.
andalusian81 05-20-2009, 10:56 PM I thought the only advantage of wearing a 10 gloves is their speed. now I know it will hit me hard too?
you are going to get rocked with those 10oz, at my gym we don't even spar with 12s, I don' t know what kind of experience your trainer has... usually its 14oz-16oz for sparring sessions to prevent cuts and common injuries such as those that occur with 10-12oz gloves.
Leakbeak 05-21-2009, 04:35 AM You should be glad to have the odds stacked against you and more importantly your hands will be better protected. A bad craftsman always blames his tools so don't worry about it and don't let it bother you or you will become that bad craftsman! As long as he doesn't have plaster in his gloves or all the foam taken out, you will be fine! After all, it is a friendly spar
andalusian81 05-21-2009, 04:43 AM Well I guess Ill just try to make him quit early so he will not be able to land dangerous blows on me! wahahahahahaha! is that a good plan?
