PS3 bested by older brother

May 18 2:42 P.M.

According to official April figures released by the NPD Group, the Playstation 3 found itself beaten out for fifth place by an unusual competitor: its predecessor, the Playstation 2.

Still the boss

A 50% leap in Playstation 2 sales accounts for the surprising change, an increase likely prompted by the system's price cut on April 1, a move which apparently electrified interest in the nine-year old platform.

The PS2's success was probably the only nugget of April sales news to put smiles on the faces of Sony execs. Nintendo platforms continued their lockdown of the top spots, with the Wii coming second and the DS coming both first and third, courtesy of the just-launched DSi: the DS's two hardware variations accounted for an astonishing million sales during April.Meanwhile, the Xbox 360 was down slightly over last April, but still managed a solid fourth place and remains on course for a record-breaking year.

But both the Playstation 3 and PSP posted disappointing results, with the PS3 placing sixth with its worst performance in over 18 months, and the PSP limping in seventh with a total of 116,000 sales -- down over 30% on March's numbers.

The news has revitalized persistent rumors of price cuts for Sony's PS3. The system's base model is between $150 and $200 more expensive than its competitors, the Wii and Xbox 360. Industry news site Gamasutra predicts we'll see a $100 cut in the $400 Playstation 3 announced at the E3 video games trade show in Los Angeles in early June.

So if you're contemplating taking the Playstation plunge -- and with top exclusive superhero thriller Infamous just a week away, we're betting some of you are -- you might well want to hold off and wait to see what June has in store.

Man I'm stupid, I knew this **** was going to happen. I should have waited for the price cut instead of buying a refurbished ps3 for 318 bucks(it was 318 bucks with the shipping!!)

It runs great, but this has me guessing they will cut the price tag to maybe even 250 buy this article or maybe they wont go that low.. Who knows...

It will go lower and the PS3 is going to lose out on a lot of money cause of the Blu Ray.

ps2 has been outselling the ps3 for awhile verse, you just get the news? Theres still games coming out for ps2 as well, sony shot themselves in the foot back when the announced the price, and now these newer models cant even play ps2 and ps games.

Fight, my house, 30 minutes, you dont show up you lose by default.

This generation of consoles has almost nothing to do with brand and almost everything to do with price points. Features mean little this generation either.

The Market this generation has been extremely sensitive to price and shown tremendous elasticity.

Cheaper consoles sell much more. Thats why the feature and title lacking Nintendo Wii is doing extremely well and is in 1st place.

If Sony wants to be competitive against Xbox then they need to have there units priced at the same amount.

no-one cares about Japan.

I think one of the main things is you have all these casual gamers buying ps2's to play singstar on.

And the new ps2 titles suck, I have a modded ps2 and I don't even bother to download games for it because the only good games for ps2 are god of war 1 and 2 for the most part... And I bought those games to support the company plus when I bought those I didn't have a modded ps2... :p

Lol the PS2 is being sold for what ? $50 after the price cut on it? Of course its gona be outselling the ps3,but right now,PS3 is toppin Japan, kicking Wiis ass there, and its selling well in America, and great in Europe, not to mention is killing it this year with the exclusives

well its the same, america is 360 zone since the pricedrop so whats the difference............at least ps3 software stays in good level there even though the install base for 360 is twice as big.....

Sony's bleeding money because of the PS3 & they pray this generation for consoles last longer for them to make up some of the money they've lost. If it wasn't for their other ventures they'd be belly up as a gaming company. They thought they could catch lightning in a bottle like they did with the PS2 dvd format but it back fired this time.

Had the opposite so far from my refurbished ps3. It runs beautiful, and it runs cold too. While my two xbox360s(neither were the elite) ran warm and ended up overheating.... You must have been extremly unlucky because they say ps3s only have a 1 percent failure while xbox360s have around 30-40 percent failure for the old models atleast...

Anyways, its disgusting their is any failure rate on the current systems. Their should be 0 percent failure rate, so no one goes home unhappy.

Maybe that went over your head. I'm saying if NOW the original Xbox was outselling the new updated improved system then something is wrong. Not many ppl go backwards to get the lesser of a system. PS3 has failed, BIG TIME.
For being only a year behind Xbox 360 that's pathetic. They are like 7 million or so behind 360.

im saying its a whole different ball game to get outscored by your old brother when he is michael jordan(ps2 after a price cut) than by 90 year old arthritic who cant raise his arms(xbox1)

and ps3 has sold faster than 360......if you compare their first 2 and a half years(age of ps3), ps3 has sold 3 million more....and xbox360 had no competition for a year(and add another 4 months of advantage in europe)

price drop=ps3 starts crawling up the 360's lead...like they were doing before the 360 price drop.....nothing remotely definite yet....

and more importantly, ps3 has better games.....

I was hearing a lot about how getting a game system and a Blu Ray was a still. So it should have been selling a lot lot. No matter the price because it's a bargain.

I'd also like to see the link where the first 2 years are compared.

I've noticed in videos and commercials and such that they use the 360 a lot more then the PS3.

Atleast 20% of Xbox 360 sales will be replacements for a broken one IMO. I know 2 people that have bought 5 360's between them and they have all broke. :lol1:.
