View Full Version : Roberto Duran vs. Julio Cesar Chavez at 135
Roberto Duran at 135 was invincible. He's got good defense, hard to hit and has animalistic aggression!
Julio Cesar Chavez has hall of fame ring generalship, iron chin, accurate and has disciplined/controlled aggression.
If there's a pick 'em kind of a fight, this is it. So who wins and why?
Colonel Jones 11-16-2004, 06:12 PM Finally some competition for a prime Duran (unlike Mayorga)
Chavez like Duran was a brilliant ring technician with a granite Jaw. If Duran could of contiued to make 135, he may still be champ today. A great champ Chavez was, but it's just hard to pick anyone against a prime Duran. The fact that he faught other legends like Leonard, Hagler, Benitez and the like much after his prime is astonishing in itself. Intresting to note that when Chavez started to slide, he slid so much faster than Duran. Perhaps he didn't have the same ability to adapt as he lost some of his traits that go with youth. Still, a fight for the ages, outcome.......Duran tko's him between 10 and 12 rounds.
jabsRstiff 11-17-2004, 10:14 AM In terms of "fantasy fights"....this is the single greatest fight that could ever be made.
Duran is the greatest lightweight of all time. Chavez, could have come close had he stayed at 135 longer.
Duran has the edge in power, handspeed, boxing skills, & ferocity.
Chavez has the better chin, accuracy, patience, & body attack.
They are equal in stamina.
I imagine seeing the greatest exchanges in the history of the sport, throughout all 15 rounds.
Duran's bigger punches, & more explosive style is what would get him the edge.

Duran was definitely dominant and probably would have beaten any lightweight in history....but as far as accomplishment goes am I missing something. It seems that he did not get as much done at lightweight as you would think.

He held the title for 6 years & made 12 defenses.....almost all by KO.
What else could he have done ?
LuKahnLi 11-17-2004, 10:44 AM Hmmmmm true.
Were there any other titlists at his time that he could have fought? I know Dejesus went on to win a title, but was there anyone else at lightweight during his time that was decent?
BTW, check your email.
LuKahnLi 11-17-2004, 10:47 AM OKay, Ishimatsu Suzuki was decent right?
I know Ken Buchanan was good.
Were Lampkin and Viruet any good?
Who else did he kick the crap out of?
Yeah, I guess that is really good. Silly me.

Vilomar Fernandez & Edwin Viruet were two very difficult opponents.
Tell me.....what lightweight in history was more challenged ?
Don't give me Benny Leonard because there's no way to honestly/correctly break down his opposition.
LuKahnLi 11-17-2004, 10:54 AM Okay I won't give you Benny Leonard.
Ike Williams?
Vilomar Fernandez is the guy that beat Arguello right? I guess that is pretty good.....
Esteban DeJesus would've been an all-time great lightweight if it weren't for Roberto Duran.
Champoreeno 11-17-2004, 05:38 PM Chavez didn't move up the way Duran did either.
jack_the_rippuh 11-17-2004, 09:06 PM Duran by TKO in 9..
dodge 11-18-2004, 12:11 AM Good fantasy fight. Too close to call for me, draw!.
Duran; the hands of stone rocked during his prime.
{BrownBomber} 11-20-2004, 08:07 PM Usually I would defend Chavez but I didnt really see Duran at 135. Its kinda hard to think someone was stronger than a prime Chavez. He beat the best of best, someone enlighten me. Duran by Ko is kinda hard to swallow.
Welterweight 11-20-2004, 09:16 PM Duran; the hands of stone rocked during his prime.
I have to agree - I remember Duran very well at 135 but he was not the body puncher that Chavez was. At that weight, all things being equal, I think it would have gone the distance but I see Chavez getting a decision
Ivansmamma 11-23-2004, 05:26 AM Chavez was great but Duran was greater.
Swifty 12-03-2004, 03:05 AM Oh man, both these fighters are great and I see this as a fight being a war for 15 rounds. So because of that, I'd go with Chavez because he was the better body puncher and would probably take some of the steam out of Durans attack.
I don't believe any fighter ever broke Duran's body down, to do that you have to be prepared to get pummeled by Duran on the way in. He absorbed the body attack of Barkley at 38 and I don't see Chavez outdoing that. Nobody had any free shots against Duran(apart from Hearns who was huge compared to Duran), he always made his opponents pay for landing any shots on him. Chavez was not big enough to hurt Duran and Duran was too smart to allow Chavez to work his body. Duran knew how to stay outside when he had to and get great extension. Chavez would get smashed with overhand right counters if he tried all night long.
MikeHunt 12-03-2004, 01:46 PM I love Duran at 135 and the bad news for Julio is he aint no Tijuana cab driver....Duran dominates from start to finish and easily KO's Chavez in 5.
That's right I said 5.
MexicanBoxer 12-03-2004, 09:06 PM great fight i can't any of them being Ko'd, i would say duran becuase he was greater.
Great 12-04-2004, 07:43 AM Magnificent fight would be. The result is unpredictable.
MikeHunt 12-05-2004, 03:01 AM Esteban DeJesus would've been an all-time great lightweight if it weren't for Roberto Duran.
And Fat Shirley wouldn't be 350lbs if she could shut her pie hole. DeJesus and all-time great? I don't think soooooooo.
sssse 12-13-2004, 07:36 PM Roberto Duran by UD.
smokeyjackson 04-18-2005, 12:59 PM tricky 1, both great fighters duran to just nick it by decision

I've said this fight fantasy wise could be the best? I have duran in a close brutal win. Note, ray robinson fought below 147 many times What If? A peak duran fought robinson at 140? If any 1 can pull it off Its roberto. Great board.. Mikey!
gloriamichaelc 11-25-2007, 06:22 AM At 140 chavez is a legend. At 135 many legends.. But only one comes close to our big chief up n the sky. ROBERTO DURAN IS THE MAN WITH THE MASTER-PLAN GOD-DAMN!!!
-Hyperion- 11-25-2007, 11:43 AM duran by close d.....
BiggyGuns91 11-25-2007, 01:07 PM Duran by an close split decision

Duran obviously wasn't invincible, but against this type of fighter he was damn close.
He has everything Chavez has and then some. Too skilled and versatile on the inside. Would win a very entertaining decision.

i think benny leonard would have been the one to beat duran at lightweight with chavez being the 2nd closest.
