I can... Yes I have to admit it. I have been watching Soccer as of late, and I am not ashamed to say it.
I have watched the Eurocup 2004 and Copa America 2004, and I can't remember getting excited watching a team sport in a long time (Boxing, K-1, and MMA get me in the zone... ask Nuno). I know most of you ****ers don't enjoy the real FOOTBALL and are probably goona poop on my thread, but I don't give a ****... I like Soccer, as a matter of fact I bought soccer cleats yesterday and I am gonna go play this weekend with Nuno and the rest of my boys... because Soccer is in, I saw Kanye West wearing a soccer jersey, BOOM!

So I ended up going to the park yesterday. The Peruvian kid was there again. Me and him played with some caucasians in a 4 on 4 half field game, with a goalkeeper. It was cool. The new kicks felt great for kicking and ball control. I still need to get used to running with cleets.

I can’t stand playing or watching soccer because there’s like no contact that’s aloud. (except if you trip someone or kick their shins.. ooooooo!! Give me a break, ladies.) My friends and I play rugby.. I can deal with that because it allows me to tackle hard and mess people up, all within the rules of the game. Soccer’s for pansies who don’t like to hit or get hit.. falls into the same category as basketball, tennis, and golf.

Soccer is a sport that requires a lot of practice to perfect it...

I have played almost eveysingle sport out there, and I am not gonna be a ****ing child and tell you that my sport is better than yours. I said that you need more skills to play soccer than to play rugby. If you read further down you can read that I said that I play all sports and I enjoy them all.
All you need to play most sports is a ball, young man. Poor people are more ingenious that you and I, so your theory about saying that soccer is for poor people couldn't be further away from the truth... Poor people find the means to play any sport if they want to play it, believe they do. I have seen boys playing baseball in south amercia with brrom stick and bottle caps, and even playing golf.

No what I mean is that anybody can play soccer anywhere. All you need is a flat dift field and a play so you can play. That's why people like it so much around the world. it's not a rich man's sport.

Mr. Beelzebub
08-05-2004, 12:02 PM
Soccer is the most played sport in the world for the simple fact that anybody can play it if they commit themselves to the sport. Unlike Rugaby were you have to have a certain body type or strenght, in soccer you can be 5'3" or 7'0", you could weight 200 lbs. or 110lbs. It's the skills moving the ball that sets you as a good or average player, and this is the main reason why people from all walks of life and every corner of the Wolrd have found soccer to be the greatest sport on Earth.

Yes, and to play basketball all you need is a hoop and a ball. To box, all you need is someone to trade punches with you. Most sports that are popular are played by the masses.
Basketball is the American poor man's sport, but the NBA is far away from being a poor league, it's the same thing with soccer, everybody plays it, but the LEagues around the world are way far from being poor. Even in certain countries like Argentina and Brazil, soccer is a huge economic contribution to those countries.

Soccer is cool, and I like some of the players too but there are a lot of ******* in soccer. People that get bumped and fall down like they have been hit by a truck. Some of them on purpose, some just because they are wimps. During the last world cup, that dude from brazil is a perfect example. Some guy kicked the ball toward him so he could take a corner kick, the ball hit him in the shin ad he dropped grabbing his face and rolling around on the ground like an idiot. The ref fell for it and ejected the player that kicked the ball at him. After the match, the guy from brazil was suspended but still. Thats common place in scooer and I think it turns a lot of fans off.

wow you don't know what you are talking about. Rugby players come in different size's for different postitions. Simply because they have different jobs. We need people of all size's to play not just some big ****ers. If you put together a team of all big guys they are going to be out run by the backs of the other team. If you have all small guys they're going to lose all the scrums and rucks and mauls.

True, there is a lot of acting in Soccer because the stakes are high, winning the Wolrd Cup is a big deal.

Argentina is one of the biggest teams that play like that, whenever they're winning they start falling like *****es all over the place, they throw the ball out of bounds on purpose, the goalie takes an hour to kick the ball back in bound, **** like that. It's part of the game.

I meant to say you don't have to fit in a particular physical description to play a particular position. acutally the sports are not that very different the use to be the same sport into they made rules calling a end to tackling and use of the hands. It was still common play back then for teams to play one half of rugby then play the other half as soccer.

Soccer's arguement for being the most popular sport world wide, is full of holes. It's the most popular sport world wide due to the fact that all you need is a ball to play. You don't need equipment as such (yes, I know they wear shin pads and cleats and all that ****). You can play with a ratty old ball and a couple rocks for goal posts. It's not like hockey or football or baseball, where you need a **** load of equipment and the proper playing field.

And please, soccer is hardly new in North America. Growing up, all my friends were in soccer leagues. We learned it in school at a young age. All the schools had their own teams. Soccer is hardly "new".

Rugby definitly takes more skill to play. I've played both sports quite often, and I'd give the skill edge to rugby. Just from my own personal experience.

"Soccer is the most popular sport in the world" and right before that reading him agreeing with Bub's "Soccer is not popular in America" is making me think that someone is just blabbing just because they're getting all defensive over their presious sport of "Soccer". And then to further read on to see that Nuno is trying to say that MMA takes little skill is making me believe that ****bag, idiot whos getting all defensive...... is him.

mma, boxing, streetfighting, and any other activity that requires "throwing a punch" is going to involve a great deal of skill.

Nuno
08-05-2004, 02:01 PM
Matter of fact I never compared MMA to Soccer. When I said any idiot can hit someone, I should have added that it takes an athlete to do it right. Without technique MMA would be stupid. My point is that sports are about technique not violence. Violence is not a requirement, even in MMA. Hence my point that you can win a fight without throwing a punch.

If I wasn't getting so many ****ing calls today, I would have explained my self better.

I don't know about nuno, but I didn't bash any other sports. I even mention how childish it was to do so.
Also, I never COMPARED Soccer to MMA. What I did was bring out the fact that close minded people that judge and trash a sport without knowing what it is all about are the reason why it is so hard for MMA to go mainstream. And it is the same thing with soccer in America. Go back and read what I said, I said I like soccer and every other sport outthere... I enjoy the physically of some of them and the finesse in others.

I know. I agree with you. Its Nuno that needs to check himself.

Violence is not a requirement, even in MMA.

Que?

So how exactly do you win a MMA fight without violence? The goal in MMA is to either KO an opponent or submit him. How do you do that in a non-violent way? There has to be some sort of violence in an MMA fight. That's just the way it is.

"I can't believe that there is even a comparison of Soccer vs MMA."
It was a misunderstanding.

"I'm not gonna trash Soccer, but the comment Nuno made.... "Soccer is the most popular sport in the world" and right before that reading him agreeing with Bub's "Soccer is not popular in America" is making me think that someone is just blabbing just because they're getting all defensive over their presious sport of "Soccer"."
Just because it's not popular in America, doesn't mean it isn't the most popular sport in the world.

"And then to further read on to see that Nuno is trying to say that MMA takes little skill is making me believe that ****bag, idiot whos getting all defensive...... is him."
Read my previous post. I love MMA.

"And don't fire back with "name calling is low", okay? I say what I want, *****. And don't come back with "I never said MMA takes little skill", okay? Because the coments you put forth, don't tell lies..."
Again I wan't referring to MMA. Read my previous post.

"You, my Portuguese friend, are ****ing confused."
No. Just misunderstood.

"I'm not gonna sit here and say contact sport is the only good sport and that MMA rules all, that would be an opinion, which you can't really **** on someone for that either, but as said.... MMA is at the top of my list.... personally. However, I do agree that there are other good sports out there that don't require contact such as Basketball, NASCAR, and many others. I, myself, don't like Soccer, but thats just me."
I totally agree with you here. Mouse, on the other hand, doesn't realize that it's just his opinion.

I don't see grappling as violent. It does involve contact, but I see it as a technical way to restrain/submit someone.

Oh, I know why.. it's because soccer could never live up to the testosterone and sport-like reputation of football, so they combined the two words in hopes to make soccer a little less feminine. It didn't work hombre, it just didn't work.

As much as I hate Soccer, I have to correct you. Futbol is'nt a combination of words between Soccer and Football. I see how Football is apart of it, but wheres the word Soccer in there? Also, Futbol was created and established before Football was... thats a fact. So sorry to burst your bubble, but you are wrong.

Nuno

Why the word "soccer"?

We have to thank the students of the 1880s for the word "soccer". It seems it was the practice amonst the well bred students of Oxford to abbreviate words whilst adding "er" to the end; "brekkers" for breakfast for example.

On asked if he wanted to play "rugger" (i.e. the "rugby rules") a student replied "no, soccer", an abbreviation of "association", or the "association rules", i.e. the rules of the Football Association in London.

"Footer" was also used, but could have referred to either code.

David Pickering's "Soccer Companion" (Cassell, 1994) names the student as Charles Wreford Brown, later an England international and F.A. vice-president.

The Mouse

Soccer is a nickname for football. In the US, football is called by it's nickname(soccer) exclusively so as not to be confused with the US version of football.
