Because of the vast "Iberic" population in South America, people begin to call them Latinos. the word hispanic was introduced during Reagan's term to clasified the spanish speaking immigrants from the South.

All of these terms were trying to clasified people coming from the South, but it's not a race. If you go to Brazil or anywhere in South America you would never here someone refer to him/herself as a latino or hispanic, those are exclusively "American" terms used to described the more beautiful and more coordinated neighbors from the south.
