View Full Version : [HOLY S**T!] Just finished playing the FNR4 Demo and...
Undefeated 05-13-2009, 10:24 PM The game looks great.
Its an early beta stage of the demo it looks like. Hatton doesn't have his tattoo on the back, and they look chubby.
One thing I noticed was the controls.. I don't care if I can't press buttons to throw punches, but one thing that pissed me off was that I couldn't adjust the movement of the boxer. As in.. Camera relative, or boxer relative.
I played FNR3 a lot, and I was pretty good in the game, untill I stopped, and I still play it as of today, but in that game it had 6 diffrent configs. FNR4 only has 4.
The TPC feels ok, but I like the classic one better. I'm used to pressing L1 to aim to the body. I can adjust, but it was my first time playing the demo.
The AI is indeed smarter than before.. They will be blocking a lot of punches.. I realized this A LOT. I was throwing haymakers like crazy, trying to get used to the controls, and the computer got caught with around 3 out of 10.
This game is going to be good, and I could tell it was an early build, and I can see it competitive in A LOT of ways.
No more parries... Thank the lord!
Also... One thing that I liked a lot was that you can push away the fighter with the square button to move them away from you.. A lot of stragety to be utilized in the online portion of FNR4.. Its going to be good. Constantly pushing fighters away to create an opening..
Man I can't wait for this ****. I thought UFC was good, but FNR4 is going to deliver.

Undefeated 05-14-2009, 02:13 AM Ok..
So I see a minor flaw with the new punch control.
When I go to use a hayemaker, whether it lands or not, and I accidently flick the stick fast, you will stay there in the same spot throwing 2 hayemakers. They need to fix that.. Its like a delay sort of. Like I move the stick three times to execute a jab, cross right hook, but I do it REAL fast, the fighter is still there trying to do it.
This is with the Hayemaker's only so far.
They also need to add that fix.. So that I can control my boxer, but from the camera point of view..

Hey, is there haymakers with the straight right? Like Lennox Lewis straight right hand punch? Or is only for hooks and uppercuts?
Undefeated 05-14-2009, 02:38 AM Hey, is there haymakers with the straight right? Like Lennox Lewis straight right hand punch? Or is only for hooks and uppercuts?
I can't really answer that because im using Pacman and Hatton..
As for that.. Theres a new counter system.. So you sway and POW! Even a right hand can cause you to KO someone with one punch if caught good. I wouldn't say its random, but if the person you're fighting expends energy fast, and you counter him.. He is done.
I've been playing and when you're low on health.. Whether its in the middle or very low... You go into a KO moment, where your bar turns red.. If the red depletes then you're out! You can go into this moment with the Hayemakers, but its not like in Round 3 where you are like 3-4 punches away from getting KO'ed.
This is much better, and I can only imagine online.
I just KO'ed Ricky Hatton with a Body punch and he didn't get up. 1st KD too. This game is going to be perfect aside the lackluster roster.
Undefeated 05-14-2009, 02:40 AM LEt me also add. That you have a Block meter.. So if someone is OD'ing on you.. He will break your guard and you will go into KO moment also!

Thats sounds awesome. The roster is pretty good in my opinion. Plus with the face creater mode that they have, I think theres endless of possibilities. Can't wait. I'm hyped and its only the ****in demo. **** lol
Undefeated 05-14-2009, 02:47 AM The game is going to be REALLY good.
Instant buy. They finally done a good job.
Mad Classic 05-14-2009, 02:50 AM hey undefeated, check your pm
ИATAS206 05-14-2009, 03:05 AM yeah i've been playing on the PS3. Game is tight!!
So, the first thing to know is this is the early build of the game, EA confirmed this. So the main thing you'll notice is the torso's of both pacquiao and hatton being to big. They fixed that, all the new videos you see they fix that problem. Also they toned down the players faces, in the demo they look too "mean" or whatever.
As far as the gameplay, it's very fast. Much faster and smoother than FN3.
The main thing is the game physics. The best I've seen in a game. Things like getting your punch caught in your opponents arm or under his arm, **** like that happens and you'll really appreciate the physics. You simply don't see anything like that in any other game.
One time for example ricky hatton swung a hook at me and it just grazed the top of my head, his arm then looped around the back of my head/neck and he pulled me in towards him and while I was being pulled in I landed an uppercut on his jaw. Here is a pic I took in instant replay:
http://www.boxingscene.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2&pictureid=3974
^^I'm sure it would have been better if I used my OTHER hand for an uppercut, but still, this was a cool paul williams type of punch, lol.
The controls are a lot different so it's difficult for me right now, but I'm started getting the hang of it. Body punches you do by flicking the joystick down.
Also, I absolutely suck ass at the new bob & weave system. It will take a while to get that down, but it's a great feature in the game.
Overall the game play is dope and the final version will be better too.
The demo is limited on what you can do. You cannot change the difficult settings (its on easy). You start off by doing some basic training and the fight is 3 rounds. The instant reply is awesome (in the retail game you can save and upload your replays). When you win a decision the demo just announces the winner, in the retail game it's more dramatic, etc.
The punch stats after the fight are also very detailed, much more so than in previous versions.
Even though this is an early build of the game, I can already tell it's way better than FN3.
ИATAS206 05-14-2009, 03:11 AM also, the pace of the game moves so fast you can definitely miss some cool things. Watch some gameplay in instant replay and watch it in slow motion, you'll really see the physics engine at work, and yes, it's quite amazing.
Undefeated 05-14-2009, 03:16 AM I hope they fix the camera relative issue. Im used to moving the boxer from the camera point of view.. Not the boxer.
So if I'm pressing up on the left analog stick im ducking, and down on the stick and im moving back. I don't like that.
I like it when I press up on the analog stick, my fighter leans to his left. I hope they add that.. I mean like seriously.. That **** is pissing me off, because I suck at the new counter system because of that. I go INTO the punches.
Great game though.. I'm getting used to the controls.. Feels comfortable, but sometimes its like the game struggles to keep up with the input on the buttons your are pressing...(Analog mainly)

I haven't experienced this but I read from a couple people on the EA forums that have, from what I gathered this is something with the demo not the final version.

Yea I know its an early build, but I hope they elaborate on it.
Sometimes these developers or the people they hire are pieces of **** that don't notice the most smallest things!
Everytime I play a game.. I break it.. I glitch the **** out of them.. Unusual stuff..
I remember playing Marvel Vs Capcom 2.. That game was broken. I discovered the Ruby Heart glitch by myself.
If you don't know what it is.. Youtube it. lol
them_apples 05-14-2009, 03:28 AM sounds sick, i like how it's going to be quicker paced.
And yes! no more noob parry...I hated that crap..it made the slower boxers useless.
I wish i could play it..
DIB420 05-14-2009, 04:49 PM What scares me about it only being TPC, is that i've broken 2 ps2 controllers playing fightnight, and one of my ps3 controllers drifts now from the TPC from fn3 - i know i just play too hard on the controller, but at $60 a pop for controllers, thats going to suck lol
ИATAS206 05-14-2009, 05:36 PM Ok, so my biggest complaint about the game so far is Pacman's footwork is way to slow. He's only slightly faster than Hatton. He should be able to glide in and out without any problem, or if I want to I should be damn near unhittable. It's not the case in the demo, so you end up brawling a lot more than you should have to.
I understand this is the demo and an early build of the game, the stats are not accurate, etc., so I'm optimistic this wont be an issue in the final version with pacman, or any other quick fighter.

Yea that sucks, I'd rather have that then tons of punching power for him..which they probably gave him. not that he's a bad puncher, he's actualy quite good..just for balance reasons fast feet would be more optimal as opposed to lots of power.
ughhhhhh want to try the demo so bad
Corizz 05-14-2009, 05:51 PM One thing i learned from years of gaming is that Demo's are usually very very very close to the final release.
Dont think that the game is going to be drastically better when it finally does drop.

No pacman doesn't have a ton of power either because the demo was put together way before the hatton fight (I'm sure they'll increase it though for the final version). pacman has a bit faster handspeed but ricky "feels" stronger to me. But really power doesn't matter much because this game is all about timing. If Ricky comes at you wild and you perfectly time a hook to his chin, he's going to get hurt (or go down).
It's just the footwork I don't like. You cant really stay on the outside for very long because the foot speed isn't quick enough to keep you there.

I don't think it will be drastically different but there are several things we already know that will - stats for one, the torso's of the characters bodies will look much more accurate in the final version and I'm sure there are a bunch of other things they will "fine tune."
Kinto 05-14-2009, 08:40 PM Finally got the demo, its ok I was not that impressed I wish they add button configuration, after a few fights my hand was tired, I'm still trying to figure out how to hit hard 5 fights no knockouts.

I got KO's/knock downs all the time. It takes a while to get used to. I'll tell you this, the most powerful punches are from perfectly timed shots or counters. Say your opponent throws a punch, if you slip it right and land a shot while he's open, he'll get hurt. That's how it's done, its all about timing.
Kinto 05-14-2009, 10:18 PM Hard to do that when you want to throw a right hook and 7 out of 10 times you throw an uppercut, I didn't like the TPC controls because it rarely does what I want to, I guess i have to practice more.

This and not only that, but footwork is lacking in general. It isn't fluid. They do a better job of letting you circle somewhat, but there is still that invisible wall. The footwork isn't fluid. It's not slow, but it's not fluid either. It's not like VS where you can go pretty much anywhere you want to in the ring. It's not having to do with being overly fast either. There are some slow characters in VS that can still circle and the likes. It's improved, but just isn't fluid in general.
That being said, they really nailed some aspects of the game. I'm having a blast on the inside and they got the styles right I feel. When I'm Hatton, I can maul and dig away to the body. Pacquiao I can time the right hook and blast away with the straight left (even if the left straight looks awkward as ****).
As for more negatives, there are way to many punches thrown a round. I'm averaging about 100 per round and it's driving me nuts. Also because lack of footwork, the connection rates are about 60% (might change when I get better, but I've won every game so far out of about 7 and only have lost 1 round).
Another thing that annoys me is there is no suspense on who won. It just shows the winner and then the cards.

Yep, basically all of that could/can be fixed with better footwork. If they can fix that, this game will be epic. The reason why so many punches are being thrown is there isn't enough space, you cannot stay on the outside for long, so you're forced to brawl. This also has the connect percentage too high as a result.
So hopefully they have been working on it, or at least listen to us and tweak it.
Another thing that annoys me is there is no suspense on who won. It just shows the winner and then the cards.
Oh yeah you don't have to worry about that, the demo is not the final version in that regards. an EA rep said the retail version is more dramatic, they read the scorecards first, etc.
On some of the positives again though, the game physics still leaves me in awe at times. Some of the little things, especially while inside fighting is really cool and adds so much to the game.
So lets hope they fix the footwork, the legacy mode is deep and I already know they fixed the "fat" torso's so it's lookin good, imo.

F l i c k e r 05-14-2009, 11:19 PM I knew this game was gonna kill. Im not preordering it but I am gonna cop it the first day.
Ay, dont forget that there are "styles" in the game. So maybe that is the problem with the poor footwork. Pacquiao nor Hatton are outboxers so their footwork isn't going to be nearly as crisp as you would want in a fighter. Pacquiao is a majority in-and-out kinda guy, and from Natas' video, it looks like Pacquiao moves in pretty fast as it is.
I never played the demo but I rather play the full game. If ayone is on that ps3 expect to come across me.

Yeah I think so.
I just got done playing BR2 and it's just incredible how lacking the footwork is in FNR4. Pacquiao isn't fast even though he appears to be. You just can't circle as smooth from side to side like you can in BR2.
Maybe with the sliders or if they fix it you can, but I just don't see much of an improvement....You still can't just circle all the way around and back.
ILLuminato 05-15-2009, 12:38 AM Yeah I think so.

JmtRyan 05-15-2009, 12:23 PM I've just finished playing it. First impressions where good, but not as good as UFC, in my opinion. One thing i am really impressed with is how well fight night flows, easily the best boxing game i've played.
Clegg 05-15-2009, 12:34 PM Just played it a couple of times.
1. Can I skip past the tutorial next time? That crap should be optional.
2. I'm not sure what to make of the game so far. Not that impressed, but gonna keep trying it and see if it grows on me as I get more used to the style.

Also stamina severely effects how fast you move... which is realistic..

I always KO them.. Mix it up.
Can't wait for the the release!
punchDrUnK MONK 05-17-2009, 12:10 AM it seems real solid... the head movement is refreshing as i have been playing ufc undisputed, which is great, but no head movement in the stand up made me stomach turn.. fight night round 4 looks great in my opinion, the game play is better than round 3 100%
the career mode needs to be big for this game to be not a let down though. they have done well with the roster, so online play and multiplayer will be amazing. and like i said game play great, physics make it more realistic to the real sport.... each version of this games gettin closer n closer to the sweet science....
i love how they show the online mode and how theirs world rankings and world titles. u make a fighter and go for the title. so it really makes it cool. not just picking the basic fighters and fighting for that win or loss... which is still there as well as an online option i hope.
the demo gives a taste to the full meal that is this game..
and the taste tastes GREAT.
cant wait, my pre order is in
Pharoahe 05-17-2009, 01:15 AM Just for information's sake, the build of the demo was the game in early April. So they have already made a month's worth of improvements, plus they will (hopefully) react to the issues that people find from this demo.
I can't win by KO! lol

I found a big flaw. You can just throw haymakers all night and you'll win by KO easy.
