View Full Version : British Boxing Commentators
Bobby Shaw 05-05-2009, 05:19 PM Colin Hart is the best comentator Britain has to offer. He is not afraid of going against convention and doesnt need this patriotism and political correctness rubbish. The man is impartial, fair and very knowledgeable.I remember before Hatton fought Mayweather.Hart clearly said Hatton would be knocked out. This time around he said the same thing.Colin Hart deserves great respect. If only everyone could say what they actually believe instead of just jumping on the bandwagon.
Barry Mcguigan,I dont know how he still got the job.The guy knows jack
Steve Bunce-he is always off the mark,he should stop making predictions.
Johnny Nelson-this guy is trying too hard to be a fan instead of being a commentator. Why wont he tell the truth. He is always licking someone's ass.
Can you guys talk about any commentators and tell us how you see them. They obviously read these forums and it is good for them to know what we think about them.

What's wrong with Barry? i like bazza.
beecherhq 05-05-2009, 05:57 PM Colin Hart is a pundit not a commentator, he does speak to truth in regards to Hatton particularly. I do think he has a bit of bone to pick with Hatton on occasion as well, why i couldn't tell you.
He comes out with some good points sometimes but it's usually followed by a load of bollocks afterwards.
I appreciate Ian Darke as a commentator, i know a lot of others dont. I just think he does a good job with background story whilst actually commentating on the fight as well.
enz0888472 05-05-2009, 05:58 PM i agree with you that barry mcguigan is terrible. He totally ruined the froch-taylor fight.
I personally think that the partnership of jim watt and ian darke(especially watt) is the best in world boxing. They are slightly biased towards british fighters but dont go overboard.
Savino 05-05-2009, 06:47 PM Colin Hart, I noticed myself that he always seems to have a pop at Hatton. Maybe a sign of jealousy? He needs a new wig anyways, the one he had on the other night was terrible.

I like Mcguigan as well . Here he is telling Calzaghe Lacy won't get a shot on him if he sticks that right jab in his face 3.05 of this vid , good prediction . He's the only one I can remember as well who more or less got Mayweather Hatton right from this side of the Atlantic

Yeah, i remember that. his predictions are usually right and i don't mind his commentating either
Freedom. 05-05-2009, 07:23 PM The UK commentators are overall better than the American commentators. I especially like Jim Watt.
There are no real morons like Teddy Atlas, or nuthugging fanboys like Max Kellerman among them.
There are some good ones in the US too though, like Steward, Lampley, Tessitore and Johnson.
Patty Tanager 05-05-2009, 07:31 PM That wig was hilarious, we were in stitches with it :D.
Savino 05-05-2009, 08:04 PM That wig was hilarious, we were in stitches with it :D.
thank god it wasn't only me who noticed then. I had to point it out to my mates and they were in stitches also. worst wig ever.
PittyPat 05-05-2009, 09:34 PM I can't stand the shouty Scottish guy. His voice grates on me majorly.
Mugwump 05-06-2009, 02:20 AM I like McGuigan, but he sometimess gets annoyingly repetitive. Take the Froch fight for example. If he said "Froch needs to get his hands up" once he must have said it a thousand times. Whilst he was absolutely right in his analysis, I didn't need the glaringly obvious shoved down my throat every thirty seconds.
Quiet_Storm 05-06-2009, 05:43 AM Too bias for my liking. Ian Darke acts like a fan boy.
Zmlacksz 05-06-2009, 07:27 AM Duke is the best, hand down, no bull****. You should have heard his commentary on the Taylor Froch fight.
Davros? 05-06-2009, 07:39 AM bring back Harry and Reg.
Dem Eyes 05-06-2009, 07:40 AM I heard Hagler commentates on some British fights?
Mersey 05-06-2009, 08:40 AM Jim Watt annoys me to death. His voice goes through me and he repeats himself over and over again.
The Gunner 05-06-2009, 10:02 AM Watt and Darke are top notch. Darke is a great commentator his knowledge of all sports (not just boxing) is fantastic and Watt for me is a perfect foil for him, just like he was for Reg back in the day.
Joe2608 05-06-2009, 01:25 PM I hate them all, really annoying, give me Showtime's or HBO's any day.
Bobby Shaw 05-06-2009, 02:52 PM I hate them all, really annoying, give me Showtime's or HBO's any day.
I have watched HBO and sho0w time and really enjoyed it.Sky can be rubbish and so is Setanta sometimes. After the fight I always want to hear what the fighters say,all these British Broadcasters do is quickly bring us back to their boring commentators. What we want to do is hear what the fighers are saying.
I watched the Hatton weigh in on ESPN because the SKY broadcast was crap.Craig missed the weigh in concentrating on some pundits in stead of the proceedings.
Another thing I cant stand is after a fight they only concentrate on the British fighter and we never hear from the opponent.Come on whoever told you always have to take sides. We want to hear what the guy from Ukraine or Ghana has to say.
Mugwump 05-06-2009, 03:35 PM John Rawling's star is certainly on the rise. I was surprised he jumped ship from Five Live to ITV. At times he ventures into the pompous - but he stands no bull****. Richie Woodhall has excellent boxing knowledge, although his monotone delivery can be pretty lifeless.
I wish Reg Gutteridge were still around.
1SILVA 05-06-2009, 03:47 PM i agree with you that barry mcguigan is terrible. He totally ruined the froch-taylor fight.

Those two clowns were so biased on saturday evening it is not funny. Hatton landed a shot early in the second round and they thought he was coming back. Right before he got knocked out, they were claiming that it was an exciting war. It was a one-sided massacre!!!!! They were not watching the same fight that was taking place

You are right sometimes I switch off the sound of my telly because of biase.I would rather depend on the sound from the American stream than some of these so called commentators
freeboxing 10-13-2011, 08:24 AM I got annoyed by some commentators. I guess they just have to limit side comments.
Cloud 10-13-2011, 08:30 AM Most British Commentators are total fanboys of the British Boxer. I cant stand Johnny Nelson or Steve Bunce. They get on my wick something shocking.
Don't know the guys name but he was with Jim Watt on the Wlad-Haye fight. Cant stand him most times either.
My fave pairing was Jim Watt and Reg Gutteridge. Harry Carpenter was damn good too. I love Barry M.
SaintGeorge 10-13-2011, 08:42 AM Adam Smiths knowledge is superb, he's a good front man but I don't like him as a commentator.
Jim Watt has the voice but he can talk some ****e at times.
Glen Mccrory is useless, he also chatted up my mum once, prick.
Barry Mcguigan talks the most sense out the lot, he's the best analyst by a country mile, he got Haye v Wlad spot on.
Richie Woodhall talks sense but gets far too excited at times and his accent doesn't sound right.
Jonny Nelson is hit and miss, without being racist, he favours the blacks a hell of a lot, his dick sucking of DeGale was embarrssing.
Ian Darke is the best commentator by a country mile.
Nicky Piper looks like a lesbian.
John Rawling is okay, prefer Darke though, it's a shame Darke only seems to do the big fights now.
Dave Clark is a good anchor.
Who have I missed?
My dream setup would be - Dave Clark as anchor, Jonny Nelson, Barry Mcguigan and a current relevant fighter in the studio.
Adam Smith interviewing and Ian Darke and Jim Watt commentating.
Fish_Scotland 10-13-2011, 10:25 AM I can't stand the shouty Scottish guy. His voice grates on me majorly.
Shouty Scottish guy? WTF
Australians have yet to figure out how to pronouce any sentence properly.I'm not joking either. You raise the last syllable on every sentence (it's called raised intonation) which means you's can make ANY sentence sound like it's a question.
Put that in your pipe and smoke it. "Shouty Scottish guy" tut tut lol :nana:
Fish_Scotland 10-13-2011, 10:27 AM Jim Watt annoys me to death. His voice goes through me and he repeats himself over and over again.
An Aussie then a SCOUSE saying a Scots accent is annoying. This is beyond......:grr:
hahaha

Oh yeh it's also called rising terminal if you want to check it out lol
IronDanHamza 10-13-2011, 01:02 PM They NEED to hire Chris Eubank.
Cloud 10-13-2011, 04:56 PM They NEED to hire Chris Eubank.
THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wouldnt mind Eubank and Benn on commentary LOL. Sadly, that would never happen...
ding-ding 10-13-2011, 05:31 PM The UK commentators are overall better than the American commentators. I especially like Jim Watt.

Jim is good but he has an awful habit of saying "stop the fight now" when someone wobbles slightly :D
Ian Darke is a top commentator imo, I may be swayed cos he had a good laugh with us after the Khan Barrera fight in Manchester though
NoLove 10-14-2011, 12:45 AM Most British commentators are awful. Glen McRory should be sacked. He has no place in the entertainment industry. Duke McKenzie is awful and boring.
The sky pundit team needs a shake up too. Nelson, McRory, get them out.
NoLove 10-14-2011, 12:46 AM Also John Rawling needs to go. He's a good commentator but his boxing opinions are stupid. I remember when Khan was fighting on ITV against some portugese guy and rawling said ''is Khan the best at any weight''?
annavogelgm 10-14-2011, 04:47 PM I didn't realize how bad Nielly was until this Olympics, he was passable when Woodhall was with him but as soon as Woodhall took a break and left him on his own he was dire.
ding-ding 10-15-2011, 04:52 AM Also John Rawling needs to go. He's a good commentator but his boxing opinions are stupid. I remember when Khan was fighting on ITV against some portugese guy and rawling said ''is Khan the best at any weight''?
:D ****ing hell, they're desperate at times some commentators, they run out of things to say but as it's their job they feel the urge to blurt something out however daft it may be
that's a classic though, Amir Khan the best Heavy weight EVER!
The_Demon 10-15-2011, 07:38 AM Adam Smiths knowledge is superb, he's a good front man but I don't like him as a commentator.

 I know it's funny but you just wanna grab that commentator and punch him.
