I like Common and MC Lyte, and ATCQ and De La Soul, but they don't belong on the list ahead of MC Hammer/Vanilla Ice, Ice-T/Too Short/Eazy-E, Notorious BIG, Will Smith, Master P, or Timbaland (if we can count a producer...the original list has Dre and even he viewed 'The Chronic' as a Death Row compilation he was producing...)

You really think Will Smith is a possible candidate for the top 10 of all time influential rapper?

no rakim? I always said run dmc is not as influential as people think. Were they popular?of course they they bring in alot of fans of course. But they did not influence mc's as far as rhyming style or beats. So musically i dont think they influence alot of mc's

From MTV visibility, mainstream friendly, Grammy-winning. to acceptance as a true artist - crossover into acting, to big-time video tie-ins to his movies that made 40-year old Joe Whiteman in suburbia accept rap as something more than tattooed hooligans in jewelry cursing, I would say yes...

Pac brought the most fans to the genre, no arguments, weather it be the casual listener or the eventual hip-hop head...

As far as the most influential rapper among rappers...that's debatable.

Maybe when all was said and done, but it was MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice who did it as it was in its infancy as a mainstream genre...

hmm

Rakim
Wu-Tang Clan
Tupac
Missy Elliot
Outkast
The Beastie Boys
The Notorious BIG
Public Enemy
Slick Rick
Busta
Big Daddy Kane

i want to say the Sugarhill Gang. regardless of the fact that they didn't write those lyrics and they didn't really have much raw talent, they did produce the first legit hip hop single.

Yeah, I see where you mean, I guess it's really unfathomable who (MC & Vanilla vs. Pac) brought the most fans to the genre...

nwa relly changed everything to the point of cussing, speaking about streets not needing mtv or radio to get famous, they spawned the biggest names that spawned the biggest names today, NWA made rap rise to its biggest and most successful years, everyone that is extremely popular has been in some shape or form linked to death row which links to nwa

thank god nobody has been dumb enough to say, nwa isnt the most influential, bad boy got its legacy because it was the east coasts death row, death row links to nwa, all rappers cuss because nwa was the frontrunners in getting free speech , every rapper cusses, when nwa linked death row died , all of hip hop died slowly, now we got morons like lil wayne claiming hes the best, thats how bad rap is, bow wow retires and people thank god he retired, rappers are now movie actors primarily, literally, i see rappers in all movies available, rap is a joke, anybody can get angry for me saying this but then theyll see their favorite movie and theyll see their favorite rapper in that movie

Tribe, De La and the Leaders of the New School (that whole collective) influenced many artists that came after them. They helped usher in the jazz-heavy tones in hip hop and really set the standard for independent/alternative hip hop artists. Any independent acts that you've heard and plenty of "underground" acts will site ATCQ, De La, Brand Nubian, etc as direct influences. Talib Kweli and Mos Def most notably (as far as alternative acts go).

i have many of their albums, i know collectively they did that but in no way shape or form, did they influence rap more than NWA , NWA really changed all music altogether, even rock , this list is still a piece of garbage if you have to put these guys on their own slot on this top 10 poll and NWA gets no slot or a even a runner up mention, you cant tell me A Tribe Called Quest influenced rap more more than NWA, In fact KRS One should be ahead of Tribe,(KRS ONE = Knowledge Reign Supreme Over Nearly Everything), Eazy E did the most to extremely make hip hop wahat it is today back in 88, Your collective guys all got influenced by NWA just for the simple fact all of the guys you mention cuss on records,

Brand Nubians first self titled disk was a bit overated, i only liked the song Brand Nubian

MC LYTE did little compared to other rappers, if you want to go that minority route, you should add Vanilla Ice or Beastie Boys(influencing whites), Frost(influencing Hispanics),

Queen Latifah did a greator job of the insignificant woman rap empowerment movement in hip hop,

MC Lyte did little compared to Latifah, Latifah was beloved in east and west while MC Lyte was just praised in east for one semi hit single, Keep On Keepin On,

Hell Salt N Pepa belong on that list before lyte

Im Puerto Rican so My opinion might be a little biased but.....How the hell is Big Pun not one of the most influential rappers....The first Latin rapper to go platinum, opening the doors to all these reggaeton artists and Spanish rappers. Considering how big spanish rappers have gotten after Pun did it and not before, I would say he influenced big time.

he influenced the most influential rapper of all times... without scarface, tupac would sound a lot different.. go back and listen to face's flow and subject matter in the mid to late 80's and throughout the 90's and you'll see where tupac got some of his insperation. ive read an interview saying that pac's favorite rapper ever was face.

Big Pun deserves more credit than MC Lyte, he did go platinum and many rappers spawned outta Puns camp from his sucess,

If Pun woulda been early 90s, he should be there, Cypress Hill will never get mentioned for the fact they this is a EAST COAST politically correct poll that adds MC Lyte on its poll, minorities like B Real did more to help hip hop than MC Lyte, De La Soul, Common, Etc.

now we agree on something she was a bit influential but not to the point where she should be listed, this was a horrible list, many guys i mentioned were only mentioned because their were way more deserving acts that coulda been mentioned but werent(instead of Lyte and other non entirely great influences listed)

MCLyte should have not been listed as the womens P.C choice on list, Others have better qualifications than one kind of hit single Lyte

I can tell you that Tribe is arguably the greatest group in the genre. Right there neck and neck with the Wu-Tang Clan, Outkast and/or any other act that has ever done it.

You believe that NWA should be on the list (I don't disagree), but you stated:

who the hell did these guys influence, anybody that answers, at least try to reason who they influenced , the ones in red didnt influence much at all , they did very little either than be from new york which is the rap biased capital of the world

and you highlighted Tribe. Now I'm not trying to teach you anything, you know what you're talking about and all that, that's why it is surprising you'd question Tribe. Their inclusion shouldn't be shock to any. They are one of the most highly regarded, critically acclaimed acts in hip hop history and they DID have heavy influence on artists and the sound of music that came after them. NWA didn't do it alone, nor did anyone, but they were the face or standard for the influence. That's how Tribe was with alternative hip hop, a sub-cat which is still very strong today.

BTW, were you once "Rahman" long ago?

BTW, were you once "Rahman" long ago? They really are regarded as one of Hip Hops greatest groups, i had 3 of their albums, favorite song, Bonita Applebum, I woulda think id be easier to put Q Tip in place of his group cause he can rap, Buddy was my favorite De La Soul song that had A Tribe as guest, Q Tip had a good solo album, I thought it was in my opinion better than some of tribes albums, Tribe is definitely in top 20 in my opinion and arguably in top 15, Maybe i gotta listen to more Tribe, ive heard all their albums so i know what they sound like,

Q Tip is definitely one of the greatest rappers today, Alternative rap today is in almost sub par level as hardcore rap, never woulda thought that would happen so their you got it, if this was a top 20 list, maybe i would stop complaining less,

by the way,USC over your Florida gators
