View Full Version : Do you hands swell up after boxing training?
BrooklynBomber 04-16-2009, 06:49 PM And no, smart asses, I dont mean arm pump that you get after weight lifting.
After I box and get the wraps off I often notice that my hands look like hands of a geriatric, all red and with thick pumping veins. Might have something to do with tightness of wrapping.
So, do any of you get that?
Versastyle 04-16-2009, 06:56 PM Not with me. I have very thick and extremely long wraps so I don't have to wrap really tight for them to be protected.Maybe that's what you need.
Sox8055 04-16-2009, 07:03 PM Most likely your hand wraps. They are too tight, I used to do this for like 3 days , then I wrap them a lil loose, felt way better after training.
BrooklynBomber 04-16-2009, 07:05 PM I wrap really tight for a better wrist support.

The wrist and the thumb area are the ones that make your hands swollen more. Try loosing them up a bit...
robjr 04-16-2009, 09:25 PM I got a messed up knuckle on my right hand that always swells up from when I was in a street fight back in 2000
kyle82 04-17-2009, 04:22 AM most of it depends on the wrapping.. if you wrap it tight, then there's no internal pressure within.. internal pressure causes them to swell, that's the main idea.

Infern0 04-18-2009, 06:09 AM I have problems with my hands for various reasons
1. when I was 17 I broke my right hand in 3 places in a street fight
2. when I was 19 I needed 23 stitches in my right hand after puching through a car window.
these two problems **** me up so bad, but i just have to deal with it.
Pony Boy 06-18-2009, 12:38 PM Try rubbing your hand before wrapping them to improve blood circulation. Spread your fingers when wrapping between the fingers and make a fist when wrapping over the knuckles. This way the wraps won't get to tight and after your workout, ice your hands or soak them in water w/epson salt, and stretch.
LVBoxer1 06-18-2009, 01:08 PM Which wraps are you using? Mine get red from the wraps, but thats it. Try getting the "pro" wraps if you dont have them
Cuauhtémoc1520 06-18-2009, 01:31 PM I wrap really tight for a better wrist support.
When wrapping your hands, you should hold them with the fingers slightly apart. Don't wrap too tight or too lose. If you feel like you are cutting off circulation to your fingers, they are too tight.
The only part is at the end when you finish wrapping your wrist, you should make a fist and tighter around the wrist but you should feel no discomfort.
You are wrapping your hands way too tight, common mistake.
them_apples 06-18-2009, 05:37 PM my hands swelled up and were all bruised for the first month. I actually grew extra bone on my index and middle finger knuckle? Either way my hands hardened a bit and now they don't swell. That puffy look is from wraps bring on to tight however.
