Technically, I'm 1099'er so I have a tax guy do my **** for me. Part of the reason my taxes were so high is that nothing gets deducted from my pay checks so I have to pay everything at the end of the fiscal year. That and not being married, having kids, or owning a house were also factors for my getting boned at tax time..

Yep, getting 1099'd sucks. Not only for the reasons you mentioned, but they also rip you a new ******* with self-employment tax. That's probably about 4 grand right there.You could always pay quaterly estimates to lessen the burden of having to pay all of that money come April. There are definitly some expenses you should be able to deduct though that should help you out.
