In boxing, bulking up is not a good thing. It can make you slow.
However, you shouldn't be shy on buying those kinda drinks, Everyone has to start at some time. If you still dont wanna buy those drinks, i would say just do it the old fashioned way.................... lift heavy weights do 8-10 rep range. And eat lean meats and eat plenty of protein(1 gram of protein per body weight).

I never started, and don't plan to. I prefer to do it all naturally, with lean meats and protein like you said.
To the original thread starter: it can be done naturally, but will take more time and effort on your part. However, if you just don't want to buy them because you're shy of going to the store, then that's just a dumbass reason.

Why do you not use whey protein drinks????? Just curious. When i was lifting weights I never did, cuz i was getting enough protein thru my nutrition. Now that im in boxing, i only eat like 100 grams of protein if that so i still need like 35 grams of protein. So i drink a all natural whey protein drink, but only when i do my heavy bag workouts.

Just a personal preference. I don't have anything against people that do, but I just like to keep things completely natural (I've never used any supplements or steroids to help with my training).
K Larsen 04-01-2009, 10:23 PM What? dont be shy about some thing like that. You can bulk op by eating foods high in protein, such as meats, legumes, eggs and poultry. There are many other foods rich in protein if you do some research. Dont get too bulked up or it will affect your boxing performance. I wouldnt even say "bulked up". Just "filled in" and strong.
Pork Chop 04-02-2009, 01:06 AM few quick notes
a lot of supplements have tested dirty recently, even the xyience that the ufc pushes. probably not a bad idea to stay away from them.
the guys you see in the ads for supplements are usually on the juice anyways.
i think bodybuilder's advice of how much protein to get in order to pack on muscle is rather exaggerated (1g per pound of bodyweight); I get nauseous after 100~110 grams in a day. There was an article on yahoo earlier this year that referenced a study that agreed with this.
Another recent study showed that chocolate milk post workout is almost the ideal food for building & repairing muscle.
regardless of the protein shakes, you're not going to pack on a lot of weight unless you eat a lot.
Eating natural foods is how a lot of old timers did it and they had better looking physiques than a lot of the chemically enhanced guys you see these days.
as far as exercise goes, if you have a hard time gaining weight, often the key is to work out less - but more intensely; work with higher weight not with higher volume.
keep the exercises basic, but big movements (not isolated joints):
squats, deadlifts, overhead press, pullups/chinups
keep the number of reps medium to low.
believe it or not, you can even look pretty buff just doing bodyweight exercises (different pushups, bodyweight squats, pullups, etc).
g0tcha 04-02-2009, 02:32 AM supplements are what they are. supplements. they are in no means meal replacements or replacement of anything. they are in addition to. i have a hard time eating the amount of protein as well because i dont have that big of an appetite but you just have to suck it up and do what you have to do. 35g of protein is pretty easy to come by. a serving of cottage cheese 1/2 cup, serving of milk 8oz, 2-3 slices of whole grain wheat bread and your set. dont be shy to buy the protein powders. if you are then just order it from bodybuilding.com. ive used natural whey protein powder for a long time and its great stuff. but remember its a supplement not a replacement.
F l i c k e r 04-02-2009, 02:46 AM Who cares man. If you want to bulk up just go buy the shakes. 100% whey protein powder. There is nothing wrong with it. It can do two things...
1. Bulk you up
2. Help aid in muscle recovery
So what is the downside? Pros use it all the time. There is nothing wrong with the stuff. Its just a more pure form of it. Bruce Lee even drank protein shakes. Albeit not from powder but never the less its a protein drink.
andalusian81 04-02-2009, 05:46 AM thanks for the comments guys.
And what foods contain high protein?
And do protein shakes cause pimples to break out? others say it does

Milk I heard can cause pimples which many people add in their shakes...even Lactaid milk I guess. Friend uses Goats milk actually and has no problems. Says it is better for humans than milk. Human breast milk is even better if you can get a healthy women to give you that. A valiable hormone in Human breast milk. Milk is also said to be bad for people that do cardio so don't drink it before if you do. Positive affects after a workout though...although, who knows with studies and you always have to go by you.
Maybe Chocolate gives you pimples but I'm not positive. Whey is actually dairy so it could but it really depends on you. Everybody is different.
Fish; Chicken; Red Meat; Beans; Eggs; Pasta, but try Grain or Wheat unless you are allergic. Grain and Wheat has high protein, carbs, and Fiber and it digests slower than regular pasta so it shouldn't make you tired.
Protein Shakes are great. Best time to take them is before and after a workout. Maybe an hour before and then within an hour after or right after. Eat a little bit of Fat or Carbs with the shake because Protein needs one of them to make it sufficient. Olive Oil is always a great source of Fat as well as Nuts. There are a variety of grades/qualities but your best bet is Optimum Nutrition 100% whey. High Quality for the price and I never heard anything about it being a tainted product. It's pure Protein and nothing else added. I like it because it is light on the stomach compared to many foods, especially before a workout and right after when the body thrives on it. Fish is my next choice because again, it is light on the stomach. Followed by Chicken and Red Meat (but get a nice cut) and always eat fiber with it. Veggies as well. Drink Water.
*******Anything anybody says on these boards should only be a starting point. Do your own research as well and ask around.
Everybody is a bit different so keep that in mind.
bulking up will make u gain weight not a good idea in boxing, always be at minimum weight maxmimum strength and flexibility.
Pork Chop 04-02-2009, 11:03 AM Bruce Lee even drank protein shakes. Albeit not from powder but never the less its a protein drink.
He's not a good example; Bruce was on tha juice.
peewee1460 04-02-2009, 01:25 PM eat eggs and banana and peanut butter sandwiches.

You shouldn't be shy about buying there products, there is nothing embarrassing to it... you are only using there store to by some items they will be more than happy because they are earning more money. You shouldn't feel embarrassed about it mate, its your choice what you spend your money on at the end of the day... why does it matter on what they think.
JabSandwich 04-02-2009, 08:44 PM being big and being strong rn't the same thing. if u wanna get big eat a high carb, high protein diet and lift lower weights/higher reps (i think, i always get the weight bit mixed up). if u wanna add lean muscle lift heavier weights/lower reps (like i said, it could be the other way around). functional strength is far more important than being big
Pharoahe 04-02-2009, 09:50 PM If you're feeling nervous about being seen buying protein powders and that stuff, go for Egg Whites or Egg Beaters. I like to mix it 50/50 with smooth orange juice, or if I have it, Dole Pineapple Orange Banana juice. Just stir it with a spoon and you literally don't even taste a difference. Even drinking it plain doesn't taste bad, although it's an acquired taste.
Unfortunately, today I was out of OJ and I tried mixing it with grape juice... tasted awful.
yeykax 04-02-2009, 09:57 PM how the hell did you sleep good in prison. i hated county jail................. but i live in Texas and idk how the prison system is in PR
Well i dnt mean sleep good but when your body lays for hours on a cot it rest good .Dnt matter if u actually sleepin or not!!!And i wasnt in no county i was in real big house but i was surrounded by my bros the netas!!!
When I buy protein drinks I purchase this stuff called Nectar (highly recommend) in the Kiwi Strawberry flavor. It's definitely the best tasting drink available, but if you don't like that then buy Gold Standard Whey Protein which is also good.
I'm extremely skinny (135 lbs.) but I don't really care what they think of me. And like the guy said above, being big doesn't mean you're strong. My best friend body builds and is 200+ lbs., but he's an absolute *****. He's too afraid to join a boxing gym with me because he is afraid he will get hurt.
I say just go in there or bring a friend if you're nervous. But if you still can't then just order it offline from the Vitamin Shoppe's web site.
Talon 04-04-2009, 08:58 PM what kind of ***** is afraid to buy a protein shake hahahaha. you should be embarassed that youre embarassed to buy a protein shake
