View Full Version : How do I stop eating at night?
Aperion 03-31-2009, 11:36 AM I have a tendency to eat at night, before I go to bed. I crave sweets and carbs. I do make sure I eat healthy during the day, I eat plenty of vegetables, protein rich foods, good solid breakfast every day, all that good stuff. I've been working out regularly, hitting the heavy bag, burpees, all types of push-ups, yadda-yadda.
On days I do a good intense workout, at night its a different kind of hunger where I need to be sated, and want some kind of healthy food, and eating some spare veggies ain't going to cut it. So I usually end up eating some (natural) peanut butter or something and being unsatisfied, and then usually end up eating some of the bad stuff anyway.
If I don't workout, at night I can gorge on food, especially carbs and sugar foods.
Anyone have any advice? Any healthy filling snack food anyone recommends? I want to get in better shape, and drop a few pounds. I'm 31, and weigh 179 lbs. I used be able to get rid of weight easily, and be lean and mean, now like the day I got into my 30s it got harder.

Ace Dutrey 03-31-2009, 11:46 AM It sounds as if you're not willing to make the sacrifice. I understand what you're going through. I used to do the same thing till I realized whatever it is I'm chasing for in my life through boxing I won't reach it without sacrifice. So I guess cry now laugh later. Just don't do it. A craving as you stated won't go away by itself. Even if you eat something to supplement the carbs and sugary sweets it won't change the fact that after you're full wou will still crave those "snacks". I'm sure you can find something healthier but in the end it's all up to you. Don't give in to the temptation and just do it. show your grit. Hope this helps.

The reason you are stuffing junk in your gullet is because you haven't got anything else to do. The solution should be obvious.
daniels_co 03-31-2009, 01:36 PM i am not agree with alza, even if teoreticly he is right.but this happend to me also and i forced my self not to eat, but the problem was that i could not sleep because of these. So i had to eat then at 12 in the night. In my case this thing passed, i was eating when i was hungry and after a while passed. But not very late...

Uh, then why don't you lay that obvious solution on us.
Spacey1991 03-31-2009, 04:06 PM You just gotta do your best to resist it, believe me I know how you feel I have broke under temptation and ate unhealthy foods before... we're all human.
elfag 03-31-2009, 04:50 PM stick to healthy foods, cottage cheese or milk is recommended before bed. meats would be good too. Absolutely no simple carbs like candy, chips ect.
Drinking some water or milk or a casein protein shake is a good idea if you find it hard to get to sleep on an empty stomach.
I get the cravings too, I actually will pig out more after Ive lost a few pounds because I feel leaner and more invincible if you will. If I have recently gained a few pounds, I will be feeling guilty and more strict on my diet.

I like cottage cheese, haven't eaten it in awhile.

Seriously though, thanks I'll give it a try.

Only if the protein drink is CASEIN protein
Here is some info about casein protein: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcnJBm7436k
but i wouldnt take that unless you are going to workout first thing in the morning. Also watch how many grams of protein you take in a day. I usually go by 1 gram of protein per body weight.
I usually just eat a couple of oranges before bed. The Vitamin C helps me go to sleep faster and stay asleep.

Me personally, I dont like to do any kind of exercises in the morning besides running.
I dont like to do the heavy bag in the morning cuz you really should eat something before you do any kind of exercise that deals w/ alot of muscles.
IMO you should drink a Whey protein shake(15g of protein) 35-45 mins before you lift weights and 25 grams of Whey protein IMMEDIATLY after you lift weights Then like 10 mins before you fall asleep drink 20 grams of Casein protein shake.
DA1CATAS 03-31-2009, 09:26 PM eat sleeping pills works for me! :)
Yup yup.. I'll take a tylenol and turn on some john stewart and stephen colbert by the end of colbert I'm out like a light and waking up about 6 am.
tylenol that does not get me sleepy.

that was my next question so its fine to drink both types of protein?
SOY-COMO-SOY 03-31-2009, 09:56 PM that was my next question so its fine to drink both types of protein?
yea. Just remember dont intake more protein than 1 gram of body weight.
I only weigh 135 so I can only intake 135 grams of protein. Dont over do protein. it could mess up your organs, liver i think but maybe kidneys too.
Remember whey protein is fast digesting(45mins) so take it before and after you lift weights... if you had to choose between before or after. i would say after you lift.
Casein protein is slow digesting so take it before bedtime, so 4 hours later if will start digesting.
I would also reccomend this protein over any http://www.optimumnutrition.com/products/natural-100-whey-gold-standard-p-202.html because its all natural. you can find it at any gnc, vittamin shoppe, vittamin world, etc. for about $50 for a 5lb bucket

thx alot i just got some whey protein and im getting some casein tommorow.
sukhenkoy 03-31-2009, 10:54 PM Just force yourself not to eat for a day or two. After a while your body will just be used to not being hungry after a certain period of time, and you won't have those nasty late-night cravings. Also, do a moderate workout before going to sleep to kill the appetite. I know if I bust my ass with some pushups or pullups, I'm not really hungry for the next 40 minutes or so.
That, or just drink a lot of water when you're hungry.
Really just a matter of willpower as many have already stated. :ok:
robjr 03-31-2009, 11:21 PM Its just a mental game.. simply, "just dont"
as i said man just sleeping pills, when i do nothing i just take some of it... then ill sleep for like 5hours it avoids me from eating or thinking about food and when i wake up i'll just drink some coffe and smoke 1stock of cigarette.
Cigarettes don't really affect my training because when i was staying back in manila the air quality in that part i live was very bad, and breathing the air there is like equivalent to smoking 1 cigarette a day. So it don't really matter if i smoke once a day. :)
anyway before i trained i was 135 in late december now im down to 120... im targetting 115.
Tu Pai 04-01-2009, 06:59 AM You guys takin Tylenol and sleeping pills are actually doing your body worse than eating a ton of sugar. When you push your body to work out hard it'll ask you for more food. You need to have more meals and snack before going to bed, if that doesnt' work do some crunches and fill up on water or crystal light.
I tried those whey protein shakes before bedtime and they gave me a gut.
cigarettes ease my hunger along with lemon juice smoking twice a day ain't that bad helps me getting down my weight im now 120 my target is 115 and maintain it. :D
I even think of getting to 105 so i can fight little guys and use my longer reach and jab the sh1t out of them.. hhaaha :D

I don't read here too often, but from the posts of yours I have seen, I think it is safe to say you are a total fukin tool. Sleeping pills and cigarettes etc.

You need advice on how not to eat? your 31 and you dont have the control over yourself to just not do it? You dont need advice you need a babysitter.
At 9pm shadowbox hard for 15 minutes, getting exercise helps supress hunger.
Aperion 04-01-2009, 02:13 PM Thanks everyone for the advice. I think I'll avoid the pills and smokes though, that honestly doesn't make a lick of sense to me...I'll try the light exercise before bed and protein.
Neill Ryan 05-06-2009, 06:00 PM The trick is not to have crap in the house! You cant eat what you don't have. Make healthy choices at the supermarket. I somethimes find that late night food cravings can be cured with a pint of herbal tea. (but that's just me)
Young_Stalin 05-07-2009, 12:28 PM Well the way i always saw it was, if the body is hungry it needs food. It is WHAT you eat that makes the difference on the scale. I have lost a lot of weight and i eat at night. Casein protien is good to take a bit before bed so are lighter fruits like oranges, those go right through you. Think for a minute people recomend that you eat 6 small meals a day to keep your metabolisim up, when you starve yourself your metab will slow way down. Why would the night be any different? I think im like you i could eat my own body weight before bed and still be hungry, it sucks and i have no idea why, just try somthing light and push through it.
TheDukeArrives 05-07-2009, 12:43 PM The best thing I could say is when you start getting that craving, drink a very tall glass of cold water (or even two). The more water you drink the less hungry you will be and your craving should go away. Green tea at night (decaf) is also good. I drink water and green tea throughout the evening if I am trying to stave off the cravings.
jack7441 05-07-2009, 12:59 PM Just start drinking lots of water
Journeyman 05-07-2009, 07:05 PM i eat a lot of cottage cheese with a little bit of pastry or something sweet.
fills me up and gets me my caseine protein for sleep
