Former PRIDE fighter and one-time EliteXC middleweight champion Murilo "Ninja" Rua (16-9-1) has signed a multi-fight deal with the Japanese-based DREAM organization.

The 28-year-old fighter will make his promotional debut on April 5 at DREAM.8, according to GracieMag.com.

Rua, who hasn't fought since an October loss to Benji Radach at EliteXC's final major show, was passed over by Strikeforce officials when the company purchased select assets from EliteXC's parent company last month.

More than 40 EliteXC/ProElite fighters' contracts were picked up by Strikeforce. And although the organization took most of the top talent available, Rua was an exception.

Rua's opponent has not been determined for DREAM.8, and the organization hasn't formally announced his participation or contract signing.

Rua, once a fixture in the worldwide top-10 middleweight rankings, left PRIDE in 2006 and fought twice with the U.K.-based Cage Rage before heading to the U.S.

In June 2007, he TKOd Joey Villasenor to win the first-ever EliteXC middleweight title, but he lost the belt to Robbie Lawler in his first title defense three months later.

Rua is now 2-1 in his past three fights and 5-2 in his past seven.

I've always wanted to see Murilo shine, but it always seems like he is set back really far by the people he loses to. Hopefully he does well here.

The fact that Strikeforce passed him up basically says to me that he has no future in the USA as it stands. A trip back to Japan may do him some good but I can't see him improving. He's been the same fighter since he started his career and I can see DREAM using him as a punching bag for some of their up and coming fighters.
