View Full Version : your first time sparring expiernce
IVANDRAGO88 03-22-2009, 07:00 PM i sparred for the first time on saturday, and i thought i would do pretty good, because i was faster and taller then the guy, but he just kept coming inside and breaking me apart. and giving me hardt body and head shots. i thought i was going to throw up. it was just the first time i sparred. i have a lot to work to do. how did all your guys first time sparring experience go?
RightHooker 03-22-2009, 08:20 PM Got a black eye from my 60 year old coach.
Pretty much only threw my jab and straight right, no combo's. Don't think I hit him once unless you count the times where he dropped his hands and let me hit him.
peewee1460 03-22-2009, 08:50 PM i landed two punches, a left hook and a left uppercut. got hit a whole lot
JoHnNyBoXeR 03-22-2009, 09:10 PM took alot of punches couldnt seem to land anything good.. went the whole 3 though
Aztec Wanker 03-22-2009, 09:13 PM I landed a couple of straight lefts, but I got my ass thoroughly kicked.
dfwtx 03-22-2009, 09:14 PM I sparred another first timer, landed my first punch ( a lead right hook haha) and the guy gave up. So my coach comes in after that and promptly put me in my place for 3 rounds.
i will talk about my first time sparring in chinese boxing. u guys may find it interesting.
well, i had on some old, decades olf gear - both chest gear and mma styled gloves. i, for the first few months, just posed a boxing style to try and pickup the chinese boxing flavor.
i picked up immediately that i found my hands tied up and into me while i was being hit simultaneously.
it was very interesting. my opponents were very patient, and had an exceptionally tight defence. it didnt seem like there was a natural location to punch through. there were really no upper body gaps in the defense.
when i punched, i generally had the feeling of being suppressed, and/or drilled into.
this is just another thing that kept me coming back - using a boxing style they completely countered it and seemed to strike right into me while i was still punching.
so, for my first time in chinese boxing, i took an academic approach. and it paid off.
THRILLA77 03-22-2009, 11:00 PM I got the better of the guy
btw, my first sparring there was of 1 1/2 to 2 minute rounds initially and with about 3 or 4 different people.
and the distinct flavor, a parting, supressing, drilling - depending on their technique was made very clear. it was xing yi - your offence was their defence and at same time, also their offence. most efficient.
and fighting my teacher was very interesting as well. a guy twice my age, smaller than me, who could bore a whole through my karate/kickboxing trained defence. although i was not trying to be competitive, i could see why i needed to learn the art. and, just as well, could feel the effectiveness and the heavy feeling of the punches i still remember. now, i guess i am on the other end.
but, there are always guys who have finer skills i find then me.
my first was a hardone with my trainor-partner who is also a pro-fighter i was gasping for air at the end of round 3, i could not hit him he was fast, but now i think begining to get at him in his level.

and just when u think u are at his level, he pulls something out that u dont know haha.
i know that feeling.
Landon S 03-23-2009, 03:09 PM I kept getting countered damn near every combination I threw (I was dropping my right) the first time I sparred. Sometimes I didnt even get my second punch off I just got punched in the face lol. Good times, good times.

Why the hell did you get a hardon on your first training session? you a fairy? In my day we would knock you out, you wouldnt get no hardon. Stop looking at fairy girly music videos and toughen up!
Jayseen 03-23-2009, 07:38 PM Huum..I did ok the first time, sparred with 6 guys got dominated by 3. I had no problem avoiding punches but i had one with landing, only landed a few jabs and 1 body shot :poke:
BrooklynBomber 03-23-2009, 10:39 PM Well, the first time I ever sparred I could not do any of the stuff I've been learning before and I got gassed in like 2 minutes.
Eric Holder 03-24-2009, 06:41 PM I sparred with my friend my first time, he fights at heavyweight and I fight at lightweight
before we sparred he told me he wasn't going to go easy on me at all and if I didn't quit I wouldn't be scared of anything. And when we sparred he didn't hold back on any punches, I think I got knocked down like 7 times in only 3 rounds but I got back up every time.
Trrmo 03-24-2009, 07:08 PM well I remember watching Ali vs Holmes on TV as a kid and I pestered my dad coz I wanted to box. Eventually in 1984 when I was 12 he told me I could but I had to find the gym, so i made some phone calls and found a gym, I went with my dad and spoke to the coach who believe it or not put me in the ring on my first day with the state junior 44.5 kg champ, I was about 42kgs. It was only body punching and I got winded pretty soon from a solar plexus shot.
But I kept going back after that, had a couple of times when I went back home teary because an older kid used to head punch when it was only body punching, but I got my own back eventually with a king hit (on the 4th swing after three wild misses). I think the coach wanted to test me to see if I really wanted to box or not. He said my footwork was pretty good I remember, lol.
g0tcha 03-24-2009, 09:29 PM i thought i was pretty good and i was going to spar someone i watched spar for a round and he was shorter then me but he spars with the other 2 friends that were there who are an inch or so taller then me and out weigh me by like 40 lbs. im 5'7-8 btw. i didnt wanna act ****y but deep inside i was hah because he was smaller. but i got a good eye opener that day hah. my natural instincts were getting the best of me. i couldnt keep my eyes forward when getting punched because i wasnt used to it yet and i froze up. they said i landed a straight on him on his nose but i didnt notice because the only reason i threw the straight was because our other 2 friends were yelling at me to throw the straight as a counter if he comes in the way he did. well at the end of the second round i was completely gassed from moving around and from getting hit a lot so the last 10 seconds i was through 1 2s and i gess i started to chicken wing and i didnt notice because i was way too gassed and i got cought with a clean body shot to my ribs and i went down. a couple weeks before i had just gotten into a head on collision 45mph against a stationary car and i walked away with minor whip lash for 2-3 days. i had whip lash 10x worse after this sparring session and it lasted for a week hah. good times.
J.Dempsey 03-25-2009, 10:33 AM I was so fatigued after the first minute I could barely throw a punch, just the adrenaline from gettin in the ring, fighting and ppl watching me, and nerves drained all my energy.
I then got hit **** loads, cudn't see em, n realised wat it was like to lose heart! I gave up after 2 mins!
That was first time, now im a lil more relaxed n startin to throw combos, still proper amateur tho! ;P
i got a question who should i sparr.. fellow begginers? or pro/amatuers? i only like sparred with a fellow begginer twice.. then all my sparr has been my trainer and other pros in the gym and my trainer is also a pro-boxer training same time in the gym.
I wanted sparr with a begginer because with my trainor and other pro it is always hard i can't dominate it frustrates me u know.
I arrive most them some begginers just do mits bag and weights and go home i never seen them sparr the other ones that sparr always were begginer kick boxers and MMA'ers but in boxing no one.

you should consider yourself lucky. do you expect to grow leaps and bounds by sparring beginners? if you only sparred beginners twice and have been sparring the trainers and pros ever since then try sparring the beginners again. youll dominate like crazy. but sparring is about learning. unless your a douche bag its your responsibility now with the experience to teach the beginner guys or even the guys that have the same length of training as you but havent sparred the trainers and pros. sparring guys that are better then you is always the way to go. itll make you faster, stronger, smarter, sharper because if you make a mistake they can catch you easy and as your superiors they should be pointing out your bad habbits and mistakes.
my first time sparring was the equivilant to rape
