View Full Version : michael spinks beats prime RJJ easy...
billionaire 03-20-2009, 07:07 PM michael spinks beat the top dog in the heavyweight division, who was 1 win away from tying marcianos legendary record......roy just beat a weak beltholder, when the real champ was lennox lewis.....the spinks jinx would beat yones in a 12 round decision easy...
MANGLER 03-20-2009, 07:12 PM Nobody beats prime RJ easy. At HW, I would pick Spinks prime for prime. At LHW I'd favor prime RJ.
Spray_resistant 03-20-2009, 07:15 PM Nobody weighing less than 200lb beats a prime Roy Jones.....period.

I would have to agree. Spinks was superb at light heavyweight and pretty amazing as a heavyweight too, while something about Jones (his arrogance, his losses, his weak foray into the heavyweight division, his lack of dedication to the sport??) smacks of fraud to me.
poet682006 03-20-2009, 09:47 PM I don't think it's an easy fight by any means but I do think Spinks wins.

PED User 03-20-2009, 10:37 PM Easy? No.
But I would make Spinks the favorite over Jones.
-Hyperion- 03-20-2009, 10:41 PM a prime jones come with the fame of being indestructible....i dont think spinks wouldve responded well to that.........

Lou De Valle was very close to it, so yes, someone under 200 pounds could very easily win. No one is ever unbeatable. They just have to face the right person.

Seriously.

because of the flash knockdown you mean? It was due to Roy being careless and underestimating De Valle more than anything I think....he was nowhere near close to a decision in that fight.
PED User 03-21-2009, 04:44 AM Montell Griffin in the first fight and Eric Harding gave Roy tougher fights than Lou De Valle did.
BattlingNelson 03-21-2009, 04:57 AM Spinks was a monster when he was LHW champ. Arguably the best fighter in the best era of the LHW's. I'd favor him over RJJ for sure.

Unless your name is Montell Griffin?
Take a style just as frustrating as Griffin's, add a much larger frame, a very solid chin and a massive punch in either hand and you have Michael Spinks, a damn difficult fighter to beat at 175. I don't think Spinks would beat Roy easily, but I do think he would win. The scenario I currently favour is a come-from-behind KO for Spinks.

micheal spinks fought like montell griffin? riiiight....griffin only gave jones problems because of his size and down low style
micheal spinks did'nt even have a jab, he just threw powershots and he was slow, jones would've picked him apart, and that lanky stature would'nt have helped against a body puncher like jones

I guess you never saw the Qawi fight then.
I never said he fought like Griffin, I said his style was just as frustrating to fight against.
The other ace for Spinks is he'd have Eddie Futch in his corner. Futch devised the ring strategies for the only two men to beat a near-prime Muhammad Ali (and incidentally was also in Griffin's corner when he beat Jones). It's perfectly possible he'd do the same with Jones, and Spinks had all the attributes to carry it out to the letter.

he beat jones? jones was dq'd, and was ahead in the scorecards
if you did'nt see the entrance and heard what the commentators had to say which was roy jones said he'd be patient in the fight, which later on proved to be right, jones was going easy on griffin
yea griffin beat jones, and got knocked out in that same fight too, makes sense

Jones was ahead on two cards and behind on the other. If I remember rightly Larry Merchant and Gil Clancy had Griffin ahead going into the 9th. Either way, it was a close fight, in which Griffin was able to frustrate Jones to the point where he disqualified himself trying to finish him off.

Montell Griffin was doing it. I'd therefore give Spinks, Foster, Moore, Charles, Tunney, Dempsey, Louis, Loughran, Holyfield, Marciano, Corbett, Jackson and maybe some others a very good chance of beating him.
Abstraction 03-22-2009, 04:30 AM Michael Spinks would beat most of these so called LH throughout history imo, and is one of the most under-rated champs ever (imo)

Just out of curiosity, what makes you think he is underrated or under apreciated? I always seen Spinks regarded as on of the best lightheavies ever.

Just that he is hardly mentioned when people refer to the Best LH and HW.
Ok he is not THE best HW, but his wins at LH and move to HW to beat guys like Holmes is not small feat.

You're probably right as it concerns the average fan, but people in the know give Spinks his just accolades. His reign at 175 was overshaddowed by that of Leonard, Hagler Hearns and Duran below him and Holmes to a lesser degree, then Tyson above him, Though classy, he never had that charasmatic personality that the average Joe needs to take notice and consider unforgettable. The guy was great though, and no self respecting fan of this sport would say otherwise.

That, my friend, is what it really comes down to: To the average fan he's just "that dude that lost to Tyson in 90 seconds". Personally I don't even pay attention to his record at Heavyweight since in my view his legacy is at 175.

I'm sure he thinks Jones leaps around and pot shots the slow vastly overrated Marciano for 12 rounds.
hunkysoupbone 03-22-2009, 03:48 PM the spinks jinx would beat yones in a 12 round decision easy...
"EASY"?????? Yea, right.
By the way, how do you think Larry Holmes would have fared against RJ in the ring those nights instead of Spinks????
Spinks, Jones and Holmes are all great fighters. But to say that a Spinks vs Jones fight is easy pickins' for Michael....nope.
