View Full Version : Boxers with Winky/Clottey type of defense
estbn 03-19-2009, 12:49 PM Hi. I'm from Mexico and as you all know, mexicans fighters are known for their lack of defense... the reason is simple, most of mexican trainers don't even really care about defense. So i want to learn and i wanted to know if some of you guys would tell me names of fighters that are known for having a tight defense sort of like Winky Wright or Joshua Clottey.
Thanks and sorry if i didn't wrote something correct, sometimes my english is confusing.

hola como estas? michael watson mi hombre...
Mr Man 03-19-2009, 05:36 PM The best person to study for that style of defence is Marlon Starling. He was one of the first ones to use that style, and definitely the best ever at it.
Remember, it's more than just keeping your hands up. It's a lot more difficult than it looks.
Mr Man 03-19-2009, 05:37 PM hola como estas? michael watson mi hombre...
Good call. Michael Watson was pretty good at it too. But Marlon Starling really had that style mastered.
Equilibrium 03-19-2009, 05:57 PM Floyd Mayweather is another great defensive fighter, i wouldnt suggest doing everything he does but you can still take a couple of pages out of his book. :)
estbn 03-19-2009, 11:28 PM Wow, the feedback is really good. Thanks to everyone. I'm definitely going to watch all those fighters.
Yeykax, gracias por ayudarme, y ademas por la correcion.

Mexican fighters have a lack of defense because mexicans believe in having heart over anything else. If you talk to a mexican boxing fan, trainer, fighter they will all talk about heart over talent. So they learn to defend punches with their chin.
Anyways, if your a speedy guy I would say look at fighters like Mosley, PBF, SRL for defense. But since you mentioned Clottey and Winky, Im guessing your a slower mid-range to in-fighter. Just pick up the peek-a-boo defense and learn the dempsey roll. Your good to go.

What? Most of mexican boxers don't have defense because trainers don't really teach us defense.
My trainer taught us how to fight but never how to defend ourselves, he may just say "keep your hands up", and that's it. I don't know if it was sarcasm, but is the first time i heard of "learn defend punches with your chin", i mean, you don't have to learn about that, all you gotta do is not having defense.
Anyway, i like fighters like Mosley, PBF and SRL, but most of the time they have their hands low, and i wouldn't like to use that style.
I want to learn the peek-a-boo style better since i was inspired by olympic champion Vasyl Lomachenko who is fast as hell and use that style very well.
TomasPerez2 09-15-2009, 01:27 AM im surprised ur the only person that mentioned him. he was really good with that defense as well
RightCross94 09-15-2009, 02:08 AM Thanks !!

putaloco 09-23-2009, 11:48 AM Mexican defence is the counter punch which in most cases comes after a slipped punch(mexican fighters known to slip very well). J.C. Chavez was a superb counter-puncher even though he was an all out pressure fighter.
