I rented it.
I would rate it on a similar level to Dead Space. It's good for a playthrough or two, but I don't think it's one that will have you coming back time and again.
I don't think the re-playability is there, and I think it has a few flaws that stop it from being a great game. Still worth playing if you get a chance though, but not worth paying full price for IMO.

I hear it's not nearly as fun unless your playing with someone. I heard on single player your AI controlled buddy is utter ****.

Yeah, they can be a liability sometimes. Mostly they're ok though.
It's not so much that the AI is bad, it's just that you have to direct them to do things, and sometimes that means running around to a handle and instructing them to pull it, then running around to abridge that the handle operates. At the same time there are limitless bad guys after you, so it's a bit annoying.
TBH I think the game would be better as a straight forward one player. A friend came round yesterday and I tried to have them join in, but for some reason it cleared their inventory other than a pistol (the weakest weapon) and made me go back to the start of the level, rather than just having them jump in like you can do on other games.
I've only done about 40% so far, but up to this point the game would only need to be modified a little bit in order for the second player to be unneccesary.
